i love riding in the winter getting up close to the back of cars to get close to the tailpipe and have all the warm exhaust smoke just blow on you feels so cozy and warm and looks cool with the fluffy smoke pooring all over you
Could hardly believe my eyes when i realised you where actually staying at an airbnb in my hometown in sweden ! Strangely enough i was also planning to ride my bike to Umeå on the same sunday as you were ! ...but i also canceled my plans because of the snow that fell during the night.
Great video. Yeah, the snow session starts earlier in northern of Sweden. Best greetings from Gävle, about 550 kilometers south from Lycksele. Good luck and stay safe one your journey.
I knew you were going to the point in Norway were the snow had fallen but finding it in Sweden too was a bit of bad luck. Looking forward to the next episode.
You are hardcore! 😄 Sweden is great, but since we are so incredibly elongated, what you endure up north is miles away from what we have down here in the south. I enjoyed watching nevertheless.
Great video Liz It’s a good insight into my two week trip over the Christmas holidays although I’ll be going south to Spain and then back to England hopefully through 8 countries.Hopefully
Good decision making Liz. Live to fight another day so to speak. Very different content on your channel and has been interesting coming along. You certainly have done very well.👍 Just hoping that snow thaws out so you can get away or maybe we'll see you in the spring😩 Good to see you have clicked over 7000 subscribers now. Cheers. All the best.
Thanks! I was sad to turn back but I had places to be so I knew I’d have to at some point anyway. The good news is I’m actually back home right now so you know that no matter how bad these videos get, I was ok in the end 😅 I think this is probably the worst of the bad weather videos, it starts getting warmer again now
Good job. I don't believe your done never again. You'll be back! you know it pinkie knows it. Your far from done. :). Also new channel idea film recommendations by Liz
Well done Liz. As we say in Norway, det er ingen skam å snu.I posted the link for webcams on norwegian roads on your first video but it was removed. Anyway it seems that you have the info. You are an inspiration.
March is early! Picos isn’t too high though? Hopefully it’ll be dry and warm enough not to be hazardous but I’m completely clueless when it comes to Spain 😬
The slight madness of your travels is very inspiring. :) But summer tyres with two wheels on snow and slush, preferably not, indeed... I of course get that you were just speaking off the cuff, but Stockholm is not the bottom of Sweden. It's almost as far from Stockholm to Malmö as it is from Stockholm to Umeå, i.e. around 600 km. That's in the realm of London to Glasgow, for context. But then again, it's 600 km yet again from Umeå to Kiruna and then there's a bit left north of Kiruna as well. Speed cameras in Sweden can't really catch bikes (either). They take the photograph from the front where you can't see the number plate and the driver also needs to be identified. All of them are not activated at the same time. They always measure the speed though and can be activated and deactivated remotely. Normally at least one per stretch of road is actually fully on, but you don't know which one until it's too late. I also see you caught a speed camera yourself behind the snowmobile sign. There is another newer variant though that is used in tunnels which is much harder to see if you don't know what you're looking for, but there are always signs either per camera or stretch of road as long as it's a permanently mounted camera. The same sign is used for the congestion charge cameras in Stockholm and Gothenburg though, since it doesn't specifically mean speed camera but that's what its most commonly used for.
PS: You were incredibly lucky making it out there without crashing. I have my experiences with black ice. Under theese conditions you should REALLY use studded tyres!
Luck and skill? Just kidding. Luck only. Once I couldn’t see my comfort road surface I knew I was out of my depth on normal ‘summer’ tyres. Shame I couldn’t get my coffee and souvenirs 😞
The bird you saw in the forest in Sweden was probably a bird call "Tiur" in Norway. Their English name is Western capercaillie. They can be aggressive at certain times of the year and attack humans.
Stockholm is about 600 km from the southern border. I lived most of my life in Stockholm. But i now live 350 km south of Stockholm. I can tell you that it was around 15-17° there then you filmed this in october in the north. Sweden is a long country. Winter in the north, at the same time its late summer in the south
By going inland towards Sweden it's more likely to be snowing. I live further north in Norway and it's not been any snow here, only rain. And this is the forecast for the next week as well. I'm still driving on summer tyres. 😄
If I’d gone up the coast of Norway I’d have been totally fine, but I didn’t have time to get all the way up 🥲 knew this route would be a problem - did it anyway, I think it was worth it in the end
@@R1_Liz Yeah I think so too, the mountain pass (Saltfjellet) was the worst part. So you have given up on Nordkapp and just want to explore Finland then? To think of it, you may be home already and finally have time to edit your videos. 😀
I’ve only been a victim of it once, on my R6 many years ago. Now I know how invisible it can be I don’t worry about it so much because really there’s nothing you can do about it. I do my best to avoid visibly slippery patches but black ice is just down to luck 🥲
20:21 the big black bird you saw in the middle of nowhere was probably an Orre (Swedish name), male birds are big and black. the Latin name is Lyrurus tetrix
Orre is black grouse in English. The other black-ish male bird of a similar type is tjäder (Western capercaillie). Only the males are that dark. When they're looking for females they can be completely off their rocker and try to kick your a** (instead of some other male bird). There's an old funny clip of a local tv-reporter on a road somewhere in Norrland where that happens while the camera is rolling. The females blend more into the nature just like pheasants and are a bit more docile. :)
Do you not have heated socks? I couldn't manage without them nowadays in the cold, I didn't have them at your age we just froze. The only bit I don't have are heated trousers but I seem to be OK with that.
Sorry, but that's the wrong bike for the job..😉 On second thought though, Bikerida is driving around up there in the middle of the winter on her HD Choppers, so it's not that it can't be done..🤪
I think it was wise of you to turn around when you did. But sorry you did not reach the Arctic Circle which is located around 500 meter NORTH of the Arctic Circle visitor centre ....which you obvious also did not reach. Who gave you the idea that the Arctic Circle were located where you stopped....???? .....and ....yeah I know this area....
I go by what my phone maps tell me which is a dotted line just below where I pulled over. It’s been right about everything else, but maybe not by the more accurate coordinates - who knows. For the sake of my own feeling of achievement I’m going to choose to believe my maps - or I’ll be very upset and I’ll have to go back and then I’ll definitely fall off.
@@R1_Liz Well....I don't want to hurt your feelings ....and you can believe in whatever you want ....however that does not change the realities of what I have told you. The Arctic is my home so I know this area ....and I am a scientist of geophysics....hence I do know a thing or two about this stuff. Where you stopped was the correct location for the Arctic Circle ....only if you had been there some 200 years ago. The visitor centre was opened in 1990 ....were the Arctic Circle was located at that time. But now over 34 years later the Arctic Circle is to be found nearly 500 meter north of the visitor centre. Yes....the Arctic Circle is under constant movement northwards with a bit over 14 meter per year. This will go on for some thousand years ....before the movement turns around and moves southward again. This is caused by something in science called axial precession. It is a tiny little wobbling in the axis for the earth's rotation. You can see that effect easy in a child's toy when spinning/rotation it that the axis will wobble around. Still I think you should regard your mission accomplished. Those last few meters means nothing since you with ease could had driven that little bit if there hadn't been ice cover on the road. Never drive on icy road with summer tires ....that's asking for problems ....so take care. Since you think it's "cold" to drive in +5 dgr C....then try to have a look at another YT channel called BikerIda. A female biker (Swedish or Norwegian ? ) who drive her old Harley chopper(?) in winter to the North Cape. She drives with studded tires. It is -16C ....and she is just a smile. Some inspiration to have there I think. Good luck.

Those weather conditions aren't for the feint hearted- you made the right call. Ice takes no prisoners and you would have gone down.
Great job getting through that snow and a good decision to turn road. Stay safe and I hope you have better weather ahead

Admirable! pushing it and knowing when to quit.

I knew you were going to the point in Norway were the snow had fallen but finding it in Sweden too was a bit of bad luck. Looking forward to the next episode.
Well that was starting to get a bit tense.
You are amazing 🤩 I wish I was able to do this kind of thing. Super impressive adventure 👍🏻👍🏻
Very cool so see a video and hear a voice after just seeing the fb pics n stuff.
You have done so well? Reaching as far as you did! Not worth risking falling off! Glad you arrived at the bnb safely xx oh dear it is snow!!

First moment I heard you are in Marihuana! Ah... Mo i Rana! 😂
Didn’t even occur to me, I’ll have to enunciate better to avoid further confusion (and maybe judgment)
As much as the bike worries me re reliability, you are doing bloody good. I'm doing the Picos in March next year and expecting the same!
March is early! Picos isn’t too high though? Hopefully it’ll be dry and warm enough not to be hazardous but I’m completely clueless when it comes to Spain 😬
@R1_Liz my first time there via bike. Did France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Luxembourg from Reading in March as a late 33rd birthday present.

You are a reale viking,i parked my bike for the winter to weeks ago and im from south Norway🙂👍
This video was taken 3 weeks ago, and I heard after I left Norway the weather got much better so maybe you’ll still have some good riding days?🥺
@@R1_Liz Yes, the weather has been a little better, 10-14 degrees. Regardless, nice videos you make.

It's meant to be fun, when the fun stops just stop, you have nothing to prove mate
That brings back bad memories of getting caught in the snow in Belgium. Yes, I fell off, a lot!
Agh! So far I’ve been lucky and stayed upright
8:30 just Looks Midwales 😂😂❤❤

The bird was a "Tjäder" in swedish and in English "Capercaillie"
Black ice is no fun. Stay safe

The truck at 10:15 and 14:30 where salt trucks. the ice would have been gone soon. So close tho
I know! And then I heard a few weeks later it was back to to 10° again so I could have got so much further if I had been patient 😒

Those tyres must be made for maximum grip when there is snow there is sludge
Oh dear. Limited dexterity from icy fingers and many layers of gear means don’t leave it to the last minute for the comfort stop!
I generally do 150km before a fuel stop and in most conditions that works well 🥶
😎💙👍

No heated socks, just very fluffy socks. My feet are the last things to get cold on the bike but the first things to get cold any other time
