I'm originally a cellist but I just got a bass and even though when you slap cello it's generally just the thumb perpendicular to the string, it's surprising how the actual slap technique is similar. I look forward to trying this out!

Great lesson. I was always under the impression that when you slapped you hit the string and bounced off instead of going through it with your thumb, but now I know that I was very wrong. Good stuff.
This actually really helped me learning slap bass my friends who keep saying all I need to learn was slap bass are going to be really proud of me since I started playing bass only a few months ago a lot
My biggest takeaway from watching you play during this video was allowing the thumb to rest on the next string up after striking a string. Before this, I was trying to bring my thumb back up without hitting any of the other strings. Once I realized that detail and tried it out myself, I was much more relaxed and my sound improved greatly.

nice loved the vid! as a complete beginner that started to play bass cuz of flea slapping can I say that this is probably the best video I have found focussing on the rotation more was clearly my solution to a consistent slap sound popping is deff the hardest part for me but with the focus on the rotation it is going forward, anyway since I see that u still reply I hope u have a very very nice day and wish u luck in life.
It’s funny for months I tried and failed miserably at slapping I couldn’t even make a sound and then today I just plug in and boom I can slap idk where it came from but regardless thank you for the help
Very good and simple. I've been playing bass for 40+ yrs. I have a slap technique, but it is using my thumb as I finger the "downbeat" or the bass drum and slap the higher strings in the upbeat or the snare accent by hitting the higher note string with my middle finger. It is not as pronounced as the pluck accent, but it does get the point across. Yet, it is more labor and timing-consuming...like trying to run with a cane. Always wanted to "hit then slap. I just have to be comfortable with my thumb to hit the right string in the down stroke and comfortable with my finger to hit the right string in the up stroke. As they say...PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!
i seriously could not get slap down until you said think of stroking your thumb down instead of just slamming it into the string and everything clicked thank you so much i’ve watched so many videos an this is the first one who’s told me to do that

i play guitar mainly and play my own bass parts, kinda halfassing it, usually just doubling the guitar, and i've wanted to branch out and make more interesting sounds with it, this is actually the only out of like 10 videos i've attempted to watch over like years that made this make any sense at all to where i just remembered it and picked up my bass for the first time in a few weeks and just happened to actually do it! thank you man

Alan, I too was hitting “into the string” rather than through the string and others have explained it as hitting into the string. But “through” the string works & sounds better for me. Are you studying your courses on-line or with a physical person. Thx.

@@OnlineBassGuitar1 i cannot seem to get the correct hand position (over the strings) ... i can do the turn, my wrist is good ... but hitting the strings doesn't seem to happen often and when it does i get maybe 2 thumb strikes and from there it goes to crap ... And that's just the E string .... i can't even get to the other strings with my thumb in that position .... and that's just my thumb .... as for the popping ... i am truly better off just pulling the lead in and out of the jack .... I wanted to learn slap to accent what i already "can" play .... but i really think it is just not in my D.N.A. ...???
@@OnlineBassGuitar1 I did forget to mention that I am 56 (started at 13 ) .... and have been playing with a plectrum for the most part ... i now play with my fingers ... and am currently enjoying my acoustic bass ... Thanks for the lesson! I thoroughly mistreated my nylon string guitar (needed something with some room between strings) and previously undamaged parts of my right thumb making it happen. Time to go bass shopping! Yay!

Just picked up the bass like 2 months ago, so far I’ve learned to play smells like teen spirit and Helena from the misfits and I’m also play along to my favorite songs but I’ve been listening to a lot of primus recently and wanna learn to slap

So THATS why I kept on getting blisters on my thumb, I was using the wrong part of the thumb, thanks for a great video!
