    It depends where it hurts. You'll get sore fingers from popping for a while until the callus builds up. The action of the wrist can make you ache a little and the thumb can ache a little too if you overdo it. Just take it easy for a few days then try again.

      @Syrenity Lowe Experiment with improvising along to songs you may not know the chords to. See if you can figure out what notes the bassist is playing just by listening.
      Ignore the guy that insulted what you're trying to learn, music doesn't discriminate, just focus on learning what you want to play.

      I have extreme doubts anyone will see this 8 years later but I absolutely can not for the life of me hit any string without accidentally hitting the one under or above it too idk why but I can't and it's bugging me so much does anyone have a way I can practice not hitting them because at This point I'm half tempted to electrify three of my strings so I get shocked if i don't hit the right one

    It's about time someone could answer all of my questions. 3 different bass teachers and none of them could tell me why my bass slapping was so sub par. Immediate results and immediate happiness. You are the MAN.
    And it's funny. Because when you said "no need to go too fast" i was already trying to speed it up. Hahaha. I genuinely feel... Like I have a bass teacher now. And it feels so good to finally push out of the box that I've been stuck in.

    People,...After reading a lot of your comments; I have to say something that most of you should understand. We are MUTANTS...We're weird. We like to play the bass guitar and that in itself is some what strange. The bass guitar is a very interesting instrument because of the almost limitless tonal qualities and techniques you can employ to get what ever kind of sound you want to achieve. We can use our fingers or a pick, slap it or thump it...all that without any effects boxes at all. We're playing our favorite songs while a guitar player is messing with his distortion, delay, reverb, and what ever else they have to do to set up. My point is this...if you love playing the bass...just play it. All it takes is time and practice, practice, practice. Nothing comes easy or everybody could do it.

      i dont think anyone who likes to play bass is weird, it's a cool instrument, most of bass players have played a guitar too, guitar is more difficult and complex but both instruments are great :)

    when i hit the E string, it sounds louder and the A not that loud and the D even les powrful, did anyone face the same problem?

    • @shasta4501
      @shasta4501 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Me too. I slap with my thumb facing upwards like this guy does, so I have to be careful (i.e. use less power) to slap them without striking the others as well. A few things that I understand to be helpful:
      Slap past the end of the fingerboard, almost over the neck pickup but not quite there.. The strings will still hit the frets, making that bright percussive sound we all love. The strings are farther apart the closer you get to the bridge, so you can wail on those A and D strings to get that volume you want without having to worry about striking the adjacent ones. This is my preferred technique, although I imagine some of the clowns on the comments thread will want to hand me for suggesting it.
      Slap the E string more gently, so that the A and D string will sound more even. Turn up your bass or your amp to compensate for the lost volume. This takes a bit of getting used to, but you'll come to enjoy having that extra "oomf" in reserve instead of always being there and messing up your playing dynamics.
      Try a new technique. Slapping with your thumb facing sideways or downward will allow you to approach the strings at a different angle, and you may get a different result in terms of dynamic response.

    • @treelambs5392
      @treelambs5392 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So what you can do is you can actually go through the string when you thump (yes this is a thing) people like Marcus miller do this beautifully when you watch them play, but to do this your thumb has to be patrolled to the string

    I'm 8 years into guitar and I've learned various instruments, but bass seems to be one of the stranger ones with unique techniques I wouldn't ever thought of. The same exact thing is happening to me, in trying to learn popping my middle finger felt right, but it was coming straight out. Unfortunately I tried popping the D string so I didn't notice that after awhile my fingers were scrapping on the G string and they got bloody.
    Now thats real blood sweat and tears for music!
    Thanks for the lesson I needed some fine tuning for my habbits being developed on bass. Especially for my bass it's a 5 string so I have to manage my strikes on E differently.

There's an article on the Talkingbass website all about it.

    Try a compression pedal; learn what it does ; set it up right so you have equal sounds on thumping and plucking and one is not louder or softer than the other; I pick hard with my fingers; so evening out with compression helps; Saw Edgar Winters bass player switch to compression when he slapped and tapped on his solo; got the idea there.

    You're such a good teacher, really one of the best on TH-cam, liked and subscribed!
    I started out like flea style (flat hand over the strings) but find myself catching the D string with the top of my thumb whenever I try to slap the A (my big fingers?) I usually cover it up by somehow muting the D string, which I suppose works but only for certain things. Now I'm trying your kind of style but having the hardest time trying to slap with my arm lower like that and having more of a clenched hand.... any advice?

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I started out like that and it took me a while to adjust. Try wearing the bass a little higher. If you look at Mark King, he has his bass very high. It's a bit of a pain for fingerpicking as I show in my lesson on strap height but slapping with thumb up is a lot easier and once you've nailed the thumb action you'll be able to wear the strap a little lower. If your strap is too low then you won't be able to slap with your thumb up. Experiment a little. You don't need to clench your hand too much. I do but others don't.

      What the uploader said. Adjust your strap.
      Also try sitting down on a regular chair or couch, with the bass over your belly. It won't look as cool, but it will feel a lot more comfortable than trying to do this while having the instrument dragging over the tops of your shoes.

      It's perfectly ok. Just be a musician first. Every technique isn't for everyone, and unless you're playing 70's- early 80's R&B/Funk, most of what youplay doesn't require it, and you'll come off sounding like a lame hipster. Do/play what feels/sounds good and comes natural to your tunes and vibe.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I just realised you're actually talking about stopping or 'choking' the note. The fret sound you get is actually the sound you're looking for when you try the muted palm slap (check out my video on that). Lots of people find it tough to do that but you're doing it naturally. To stop that noise just choke lighter. If you have a very low action you'll get that thud from the frets quite a lot. The higher the action the less it'll happen. But imo you don't really need to worry about it. They just add to the percussive flavour of the riff. If you REALLY want to get rid of it, just bring the hand down lighter when choking.

    Slapping makes for a cool addition to your playing, but I find that with the proper sound settings I can mimic a slap sound while still playing rock bass (think John Entwistle), and I don't have to get my fingers twisted into a knot as I'm strictly a finger player; no pick for me. I did work at slapping for playing Chili Peppers songs. Just enough to pull it off. Excellent tutorial for beginners, or those looking to learn something new. Nice job!

    Mark, you told me the missing ingredient for slap. Muting/staccato. That's what I was missing. Thx! No one's lessons go over that.

    I end up slapping more than one string sometimes, any tips for that?

    • @shasta4501
      @shasta4501 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Poe Dameron said in The Force Awakens, you might want to rethink your technique. Use your left hand to mute the strings you're not playing, or adjust the angle of your thumb.
      If you play with your thumb facing upward like I do, dedicate a few practice sessions to playing with your thumb sideways or downward. It will feel awkward at first, but it may end up working.

      @RagnarLothbike 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, its all about practice. I am still earlier in the learning process, and I have found that when I just do slapping drills, my aim improves a lot. I slap with my thumb more parallel to the string, as opposed to crossing it (thumb points down), so accuracy is a little more challenging, but it is worth the time and effort. :)

    Could you or do you have a lesson on fingerstyle excersises? I use a pick mostly and just started getting into finger plucking, its not natural feeling at all at this time

    • @talkingbasslessons

      There are over 600 lessons here on the channel over the last 10 years and many on fingerpicking. Hard to pick any particular ones out without knowing specifics. The best suggestion would be to visit the Talkingbass website and check out the Lesson Map. The TH-cam lessons are all listed there and organised by topic.
