This has to be one of the best, most comprehensive lessons on slap bass I've ever seen. Not only is Victor a bass master, but he's also a fantastic teacher.
Just starting to slap.i used a pick for over 50 years. Thisbis so cool. I am starting to play what i could feel and Couldnt play. Watching "AND" LISTENING TO YOU HAS OPEN'D THE DOOR TO SLAP FUNK BASS "ROCK ON "
I've been a guitar player since I was nine years old in 1961 but I just started on bass. This gives me something totally new to play around with. That's right, I'm sixty nine years old and I'm learning something new. Thank you Victor.
@@magnusjohansson295 Thanks, Magnus. Since I posted this I've turned 71 years and picked up another acoustic guitar that I tune strictly to open 'D' (D,A,D,F#,A,D.) This gives chord voicing that I can't get in standard tuning. It's also like learning a different instrument. I also hooked up with an old band mate I hadn't seen in years. We're beginning to look for places like coffee houses to play. Forward is the only direction to go.
I love how he let himself does mistakes and let us to see it in the video, that gives tremendous confidence for people who wants to learn, especially beginners... make rhythm, make good music, that's what it's all about, he says
Exactly! And he does this also in his live shows: always just enjoying the moment, playing with feeling, taking risks... Sometimes he makes mistakes or misses a note or a pluck... but that makes us feel more connected to him through his music and joy
@@sebguyader + his entire philosophy is just "make use of your mistake and turn them into something beautiful" so in the end, even if he plays a REALLY off key note during a solo or fill, he'll just bounce back by releasing the tension soon after
A lot of people gonna shake their heads when he says in the beginning not to focus on technique and that there are many ways to slap. As long as it feels good, it is right. Believe me, these are words of a wise and humble musician. Larry Grenadier told me same things regarding the upright bass. Nothing is more true!🤘
Sure right I play electric and when I started playing the upright I was following all those left hand techniques but just couldn’t get the sound right I started altering my left hand after paying close attention to many good upright players on TH-cam (especially live) and realized many of them have different approaches to fingering with the left hand! And I was liberated!
my drum teacher always told me not to watch his technique. he said to focus on getting the sound you want (or end result), and the body will learn how to make it efficient as you practice. even though it makes a lot of sense, it is very wise advice!
Man, I love his attitude and the way he phrases it. He puts it forward that there's no wrong way, until you start missing the rhythm. You could play with spoons...if it sounded good. lol I play guitar, but I dabble in bass. The hammering without plucking is something I haven't considered, because guitars just seem to have more sustain since the strings are smaller and take less energy to pick.
@@Funknfritter Nothing "obtuse" about what I said. You are reading into his comment and saying things that aren't actually there. Nowhere in his comment does it say that today it's more readily available than it was back then. What you say is a true statement, but Vivaldi never said that.
this whole philosophy of playing what feels good to you AND the listeners, as Victor points out, is so important. Sure, techniques will impress people, but the most memorable performances will be the ones that made you feel: and it's fine if your most memorable ones were the crazy awesome techniques that made you feel great (it's not like the two are always mutually exclusive), but I'm inclined to think some of everyone's favorite music isn't the most technically advanced pieces, but rather more focused on the expression/groove that captivated your feelings. in any case, for any aspiring professional musicians, I wish you all the luck in 2022 :D thank you for being inspired to make and share music with the rest of us!
Yes yes yes I like it, he definitely practices a lot, I hope it's like that 🤗🤗 I want to be his teacher 🤗🤗🤗 But it's expensive, luckily there's TH-cam, thank you TH-cam
Thank you for this Sweetwater and Victor!!! I've been struggling with slapping because I wasn't comfortable with the "thumb up/bounce off" technique. I started doing it the way Victor does (through the string) and I'm already improving!
I use both; bouncing and going through with my thump, but in both cases i keep my thump parallel to strings. Bouncing is faster in some cases, going through gives more bottom to the sound and is a key to double thumping, which I learned only few months ago. Had to practise it for months before I figured it out. A good teacher would have taught it in a day I think 😏
Such a chill dude. I remember back in 1999 Victor had a website which did a chat with Vic thing. I asked him how to tap and he actually responded with a little warm up that he does. It was a big deal for a 16 year old. To this day, I still say Vic Wooten taught me how to tap!
Getting a lesson in playing slap bass from VW, is like getting a science lesson from Einstein, this is incredible! I feel blessed just getting to watch this lesson from the master at work!!!
I’ve been practicing slap bass for the last three years and can bounce off, thumb through and double thumb. I have always been obsessed (perhaps a little too much)with not allowing any extraneous string noise, which is no easy task. In slap, muting and dampening is critical and more difficult than in finger style IMO. I vowed that I never wanted to use a a fret wrap either. It’s refreshing to see that even Victor has some string noise and open string ring when he plays and it reassures me that I’m headed in the right direction. Victor Wooten is one of the best ever, thank you.
in the mix of a live performance or recording, you don't even hear it and on playing some different basses, for whatever reason you just don't get much buzz or ringing on them..
I really love the way he appreciates different styles of bass playing..Finally an honest and a humble man playing..Much respect to you Sir.. Thank you for making me pick up the bass and play..
