Avery the Cuban-American Jersey City is on track to take over Newark as the largest city. Both cities had similar peaks and declines, and they are both growing again, JC has grown much quicker than Newark has this past decade.
Roasted Toast Newark is starting to gentrify their downtown area, kinda like how most cities start in that general area. The city permitted a new skyscraper to be built somewhat recently, first time in decades. Jersey City has been slowly gentrifying most of the city since the 90s (Newport, Exchanges Place), but has done so very rapidly recently. The closer proximity to NYC definitely helps. I wish Paterson, Camden, Atlantic City, and all of the other large cities in NJ got this kind of treatment though. NJ has some of the worst cities in the country (JC is good now though)

Which is how Los Angeles counts as our biggest city. It's made of giant, incorporated neighborhoods like Van Nuys/Northridge, Hollywood, Torrance. I visit friends and family who live in "LA" and the only reason I see the LA metro area proper is the train makes a stop there on the way to Van Nuys. It's a familiar setup. Down here San Diego the city has been conflated with the county and the neighborhoods. San Diego is El Cajon and Miramar and Chula Vista and Del Mar and Kearney Mesa, even if some of those are incorporated cities with mayors and state reps.
You’re right. Jacksonvillle proper is the largest but it’s much more accurate to take into account metropolitan area over just the city limits. In most cases it’s pretty unclear where the city proper actually ends just because most suburbs look identical to city outskirts anyway. Greater Miami is like 6 times larger than Jacksonville.

New York has become been a global city since based on the east coast for hundreds of years. There are several states closer to New York City, than Buffalo or even most of Upstate New York. The fact that New York City became a part of the State of New York was completely random.

Jasmine Severance agreed. Love St. Louis but all the answers revolve around one city and unlike a lot of other states the population of MO is pretty disperse. I mean even the ozarks has Springfield and the metro is almost half a million people. And there’s KC, and the boot heel, and the Lake, Branson, Columbia, St. Jo... etc

In case anyone was wondering NY's second largest city is Buffalo. It's population is 260,000. The largest city, NYC, has a population of 8.6 million. NY's largest city is 33 times larger than it's second largest city and thats pretty wack.
Buffalo used to have 580,000 people and was once the 15th largest US city
New York has become been a global city since based on the east coast for hundreds of years. There are several states closer to New York City, than Buffalo or even most of Upstate New York. The fact that New York City became a part of the State of New York was completely random.

NYC just wasn't added to NY State after the US was created, it just historically always has been. The reason why the city is in NY state is because it was created by the British(English too be exact)as a *colony*

Florida girl was technically right. Most people consider Miami to be the biggest city because people think of Miami as the whole entire metro area which is one of the largest in the US, like 4,000,000. But as an actual city yes it is Jacksonville with like 900000 city inhabitants to Miami’s actual city 500000 inhabitants.

Hmm American city boundaries are pretty arbitrary and strange. Would make more sense to just count the whole metro area as a city (with exceptions such as Fort Worth-Dallas or Minneapolis-St Paul). Jacksonville's population is 890k, but it's metro population is 1.5Mill. Miami's 'population' is 454k, but it's metro population is 6Mill. Seems more accurate to call Miami larger.

Kinda misleading- Miami metro has four times the population compared to Jacksonville, the only difference is that the layout of Miami is weird- the city itself is so small compared to all the other areas that make up the area. So in reality, she could be right...

I got most of these right... but I actually got the state I live in (South Carolina) wrong. Apparently it was only within the last few years that Charleston surpassed Columbia population-wise (and there's a difference of just 3,000 people between them).
