I have as of today painted around 150 goblins for Old World since February. As someone who only had motivation to paint around 500 points of 40k over 7 years I think is quite telling of the hype for this game
When I was younger and played Warhammer Fantasy, I was a serious chaos player. Now in Old World I'm down with the Orc's & Goblins cause they like to party

Square Based - the reason square bases were invented
I don't know if it will overtake 40k, but it has the potential to overtake AoS if done right. The first thing they need to do is add new kits to the currently supported factions and then pull their heads out of their asses about the legacy factions. Vampires, Skaven, Lizardmen, Daemons, and Ogre Kingdoms were insanely popular. Dark Elves are needed for lore reasons.
To have a game focused on the empire and Khemri and not have those 2 factions biggest threats (vampires and skaven) is crazy. Hell, the skaven relic fellblade is directly tied to the tomb kings.
There is no potential here since the Total War series is almost finished. When this is abandoned, people will lose all interest in the Old World forever.

My fear with AoS is that it will be streamlined along the same lines of 40K, maybe I’m getting old but the TOW and 30k looking more and more appealing.
My biggest issue is trying to stick with one army at a time to paint/build because how can I choose between Empire, Dwarfs, Orcs & Goblins, and Beastmen?
I'm in the process of building my vampire count army right now. I haven't played a game yet, but I'm in contact with a few people and groups already who are playing the old world. There seems to be a healthy interest, here in Berlin 👍

I brought a doom diver to a small 1250 point tournament and it put in a lot of work. It didn't actually kill much but it took off 3 wounds from a Necrosphinx allowing my giant to finish it with a headbutt in game 1, and 3 wounds off a Duke on royal Pegues in game 2. The duke then died to 2 fanatics before he could do damage in my back line.
I’m converting my own to play with, looking forward to yelling “AIIEEEEEEE” every time one gets flung.
@@Fortunes.Fool. At this tournament my army was actually printed from warp miniatures gnome stl files, so it just counted as night goblins. I only printed 1 but it performed so well I might print another.

Hell yeah, I really like how much love you just gave AoW. My Troll Horde is largely AoW! 10x of their swamp trolls and 5x of their stone trolls! Also their Orc witch as Ogdruz proxy and a shaman on boar as a helpful extra wizard.
Got the highlands swamp goblins as well just for some chaff gobbos and then HAD to go official Troll Hag, I even got in touch with the sculptor of the Hag Trish Carden who was lovely to talk to.
In any case, I appreciate you guys reppin' the 3d printed stuff :)

I love the Avatars of War minis. Just finished painting my wolf riders last week and they fit in really nicely with the GW range.

I’m converting my 40K Tzeentch army (mix of metal, resin and plastic) to old world. I wish the Deamons would be more supported going forward though.

With the Dumpster Fire 40K is, ToW definitely has appeal.
I always get pumped to play 40k, I get a load of painting done prior to games, but that collapses the second I actually play the game
I'm staunchly in the "GW should stop acting like a toy company and embrace 3D printing in general" camp, but particularly with Old World I think its an absolute must. Using AoS models brings about its own set of problems, and in some cases isnt even a viable option. Using original models can run the gamut from inconvenient but doable to prohibitively expensive to outright impossible. So 3D printing or other forms of proxies almost becomes a necessity.
At the end of the day, looking at big fancy armies is cool, but as long as everyone at the table knows what's what and base/tray sizes are accurate you could use bottlecaps for all I care.
I agree they should so people can buy their models from them and keep the game going.

Started my Dwarfs in the early aughts. Bought them second hand. 80% of the army is early 90s marauder dwarfs, which in my totally unbiased opinion are some of the best that gdubs made.
Keeping a consistent style when I know GW isn't going to save me either is tough, but these are my bois. I understand where your buddy is coming from 😅
On the other hand, I never got more than a few Wood Elf models, so going the 3d printed route for them doesn't bother me. I think it's a totally valid way build an army.
My one grognard opinion though is that a picture of a tray of printed minis is as boring to show off as a new in wrapper box from GW 🙃
It was nice to see Andy 2D6 get a shout out - his channel has a good few Dwarf battle reports and they're very nicely done. He's very clear on what he's trying to do, how he's trying to do it and it has much more the air of him trying to work out the new game than any pretence at having the answers. He engages very nicely with comments as well and seems to be a lovely bloke. Give it a go if you haven't already.
I think the gyro he'll be after is probably the 1992 one. My Dwarf army are all Perry metals from the 80s other than a handful of the original Marauder Thunderers (my last Dwarf purchase back in the day) and a Runelord that I got recently as they didn't exist when I bought my Dwarfs as we still had wizards. I'd argue the case for the earlier Dwarfs over the Marauder ones though it's very much a matter of taste and I'm probably in the minority! Need a Gyrocopter (or two) myself, but on the same lines I would want the 1988 original so will have to wait until I'm able/prepared to pay for it...
@@ClydeMillerWynant the design of the earlier gyros - a dwarf on a few planks belted to a steam engine that could explode any minute - really evoke the feeling of being on the bleeding edge of untested technology, and having that requisite madness that I always felt the lunatics in the engineering guild evoked.
My gyros are the ones with the bat wing looking things on them, the 2nd version iirc. Found in the 4th/5th ed book. I think a lot of us have biases towards the minis we grew our army with!

I’m having fun with my Brettonia starter box at my local game store. I think the only other armies I’ll buy big boxes for are Empire or High Elves. In the mean time my little brother and I are 3D printing or buying proxy’s for our legacy armies.
I like seeing the stats, mostly to see what people are taking in their lists and thinking about why. That's the interesting part to me

The upcoming event in my area is the first old world GT in Irvine, CA. The TO has high quality custom themed terrain for almost every faction and it was a blast playing with it at the latest RTT.
Also this one is on BCP so I think it's findable and it's on June 22-23

I'm mixed on 3d printing, i have printed stuff myself for games that have next to no GW support, but it feels like with the old world if its not popular, it'll slide back OOP again. The price point is so high i can understand it, the staggered release doesnt help it
Personally, I firmly believe, people should not wait for their army. But some AoS figures and make a small force of a legacy faction. This way you know your army will not change and you can get rolling.
Every tournament in NZ that I've ever been to has accepted 3D prints. Been this way for years. It's good for Old World because getting them is a pain. And the sculpts are mostly better.

I managed to get a Lady Elisse… I guess they go small on first round of production and then monitor the traffic to try and gauge demand? Good to see OW doing well though - still a bit daunted by the rules but keen to get to some kind of event over the next year or so…
Playing in an event is actually a great crash course.
I suspect that most people in the old world, even the supposed grognards, are simply excited to see others playing and showing their enthusiasm for the setting/system rather than worrying too much about the particular sculpts/range anyone is using. Many of us will by now have been burned by GW in one way or another and have (hopefully) come back with a fresh perspective on it all.
From the outside I'm sure I come across as one of the old-school purists as someone with an all metal 5th/6th ed dwarf army who's big on historical wargaming etc., but if I hadn't added to a childhood collection when prices were (much) more affordable on ebay, I'd have 100% gone for the Avatars of War range. It's more nostalgia for one particular sculptor's style than some form of brand loyalty or dogmatic insistence on how the game used to look.
And yeh, the Avatars of War sculptor is Felix Paniagua who made a whole load of the dwarf lord sculpts for the 6.5 dwarf range at GW.
You managed to get me worried about purchasing all the new dwarf stuff! Youngrim, 2 kings on shield (I want one as a BSB) and obviously the arcane journal… I’ll need to be able to place that order in a minute or so or risk having to wait for a long while…
If you're near a store... as much as it pains me to say it... they apparently get priority access. That's how I get my web only stuff.

Some 8 more blunderbusses to paint to get my first 1k army up and ready to learn the game with.
Already dreading the fact that Chorf detachments are difficult to get into full 2k army with rule of 3 in play. Pushing big block into special slot makes filling the core requirement quite stinky, suppose I just have to come with blocks of slaves.
But it's also a fun puzzle to ponder over.

For 3D printing, if alternate model sculpts are better play them GW needs to release quality miniatures. I have armies of all GW and I have a heavily AoW Orc and goblin because they just look better

So far rampant neurodivergence has ADDed myself into starting High Elfs, Chaos and Bretonnia. Hopefully I will finish an army and actually play within the next decade.

USA had Elisse Duchaard up for about an hour. I bought mine within a few a few minutes. Everything resin sold out quick and most kits are sold out except for some of the plastics. Bretonnian kits really heavily sold out.
Main thing id like is a roadmap of release - i want to buy lots of high elves but if they are ages away id get another army in the meantime
I still want the pre age of sigmar world back. If there gonna retcon anything it should be that. If they had you actually win in vermin tide 2 and stop the skaven who set things in motion massively it would be awesome. AOS would just be an alternate realm (something they showed in realm slayer) and you could have both. I really hope theyd just bring it all back and have it still on a precarious end times status

The End Times and Age of Sigmar is such a part of ONE timeline like everything else in the Old World. Just accept it. Or build your own fantasy world with blackjack and whores, but don't call it "Warhammer"
I agree with you that it would be great to see the remaining factions released, and with the success so far they have to be in scope now surely. But I also think it was the right decision to limit the scope initially so that they could create and release a game within a reasonable timeframe. For instance If they had put all factions out those army list books would be twice as big and unwieldy, and likely completely different. It would be nice to hear some acceptance that that wasn't a completely silly plan and that actually it brought us all the game we love sooner and better than it may have otherwise. Much love
Also, most my friends who are interested in OW are interested in the legacy factions 😂 so them not coming out now would be a terrible decision 😂
I know Element Games in Manchester/Stockport has an event coming up, curious to see if any more are going on in the North,
3-d printed armies can be great but there has been a recent trend IMO for alot of them to be over sculpted. I get the printers more enable that these days, but they really stop looking like warhammer minis and more like they belong in another setting

41:49 I work in a public library where we do 3D printing for people and this is so hard to explain to them. They buy .STL files and don't realize our printers can't print that kind of model.
I would imagine a reason to not use AOS terrain during Old World events is a lot of it (for example the New Wyldwood) is designed with individual models moving around them in mind and don't really lend themselves to the rules of Old World where trays are placed on terrain and each piece has simple but clearly defined rules. A lot of AOS terrain is just there to break up the table but isn't really useful for something outside of Mysterious Terrain tables or to frame deployments around

I'm okay with ppl using any minies they want. I will end up using some aos models. But, given a choice and infinite finances I'd use entirely old minies. I find them fun and charming😊 and am very nostalgic for them.
Cannot wait for my son and I do our first tournament - hopefully Square Based! - I have a query regarding sourcing a model - I am looking to add a Black Oak Chariot to my Chorfs army - and will defiantly look at a Avatar of War - BUT - I wanted to use it for a Boss/Warboss - however that Avatar Chariot does not look like it could support a third model?? Do you have any suggestions please.
I've yet to print it but will do shortly... but looking at it, it seems like there's a barrel or something holding a bunch of spears. I assume if you took that off there'd be room for another fella.
Also you sure chorfs can take a black orc chariot?

@@SquareBasedOldWorld Your are right! Boar Chariot or Boar - I was going off the lastest FAQ. The CD's Grand Army Says 0-1 Back Orc Boss (See Orc & Goblin Tribes army list). The FAQ says - purchase 'Magic Items' from their Own Faction List. The CD's say Black orc Boss - (not Warboss) - so according to page 19 of O&G a black orc boss in a CD army can ride a boar or Boar chariot. For an attacking CD army this rather feels an auto take. But would be great to see how the Avatars of War chariot comes out.
they dont even sell all the official minis yet. I started 3d printing fantasy minis cus they stopped making them in the first place. Once I see what I need on shelfs, then we can talk.
I don't mind buying older sculpts if they come with a price per model break, rank up easier, and are simpler to paint. Dynamic poses and lots of gribbly bits are awesome for character models or small model count skirmish games, but are wretched when you have to buy, assemle, and paint 100+ gobbos.
I will never not be outraged by the pricing of the Tomb King chariot, £47.50 for 3, it used to be £15 and all their other £15 units at least got the number of units doubled with the price hike!
Avatars of War's stuff is great! I just wish they made options for their Iron Orcs besides great weapons. I've kitbashed my own in some 3D modeling software, but not everyone can do that.

As someone who makes prints for other people and takes great pride in producing quality and not cheaping out on resin, I couldn't agree more with Val. Make sure your vendors are producing minis with at least a calibrated blend of flexible resin, if not something purpose made like TGM-7 from Ameralabs.
It's frustrating to hear someone who will never buy printed minis again after getting a subpar product.

I will second the shout out to MOM Miniatures, superb sculpts thag really caputre thag slightly goofy old hammer ascetics. How about a deep dive video in to alternative suppliers of proxy minis, there are loads out there, physical and digital. Keep on keeping on!
The AoW orcs & goblins models look like the grim dark art work from 6th edition. I like their war bosses.
Side question for Rob: I’m about to play my 1st one day comp this weekend (28th), and the TO didn’t allow the orc & goblin arcane journal becouse it wasn’t released in the Australia yet (still on “pre-order”) he didn’t allow it to be used. Even though if your really wanted it you could get the ePub. What’s your thoughts on that ? (FYI - I support it (I generally support this kind of thing regardless) even through I’m soooooo itching to get my 18 trolls on the table :) )
Just had my first old world game, and I know I am slow to pick it up, but I think that reinforces your idea of it being still burgeoning. I will also disagree with Val when he says that 3D printing is a 'side hobby', because it can very, very quickly become *another* hobby. I got in early on this and have been printing for over 6 years, and in my opinion has significantly improved over that time. The sculpts are often vastly better(IMO) than the 'official' model.
Old World definitely gaining in popularity. Looks to me that it could rival or surpass AoS. It’ll be interesting to watch it unfold.
TOW def doing better than expected, but its still super niche. Nowhere near AoS, let alone the juggernaut of 40k.

There's not much likelihood of it overtaking 40K to be honest, it's a good and fun game mind!!! A few kinks to iron out still, but works pretty well.

I am not surprised Elisse Duchaard sold out immediately. Very good looking model, a lot of hobbyists surely wanted it. Wouldn't be surprised to see the model in the next Golden Demons.

I would rather see and play against a fully painted 3D-printed army than a ramshackle, grey army that is 100% GW.

Even when O&G were a "weak" army, they always had the "party or die" vibe because they had fun models and rules to supplement that vibe. Dwarfs have a similar following of the cult of cute "beer & beard guys". I don't think The Empire has a similar type of fan following, and as such I think we will see very few of them which would make me very sad, indeed.

You should buy GW models. This is what keeps our games going.
It's the players that decide to keep the games going.
Then the Old World has big problems: just like 20 years ago, there are tons of cheap alternatives from History and general fantasy miniatures. Also a pirate recast.
And especially now is the Era of 3D printing.
With regard to 3D printing I’d be happy to play against anyone that’s taken the time build and paint an army regardless of source but prefer it if they look the part per the lore.
That said I’ll personally only use GW minis to pace myself and not overbuy into my pile of unpainted minis and to keep supporting the system so they keep producing for it.
If they ever actually release cool new models for the old world factions I like I'm in.
This half ancient models half resin, one plastic character nonsense aint gonna cut it for me.

Pretty sure GW have stated that their tournaments will be "Rule Of Three"
They definitely ran the last one as rule of 3. But it was 1500 points. At 2000 that restriction is a bit tight on core.
GW has screwed over fantasy players in so many ways over the years, I'm all for 3d printing now
