Masterful filmmaking. Most people think of John Cassavetes as an actor, but his real strength was as a director of other actors. He could mold, form and shape actors with incredible aplomb. Everyone thought Peter Falk was just Columbo, but this role showed great deftness as an actor, and of course Gena Rowlands, superb.
From the clues I got in the film, there was something with her dad that messed her up. A lot of anxiety. She might even have Asperger's. I think maybe everyone in the film had good intentions, but they just were ordinary people trying to deal with an extraordinary person.

It was a funny scene, and it was meant to be funny. It's both disturbing and funny. That's what makes this film so good!
