Cabin in The Woods, Spray Foam Insulation Is Awesome! Why we used it?

  • In this episode of Cabin in the woods, it's a pretty quick one, and it centers around Spray Foam Insulation and why we use it. The more I use spray foam insulation, the more awesome it is for what we are trying to achieve.
    Spray Foam Insulation gives us three main advantages over our traditional installation of fiberglass batts.
    1.) Great Thermal Capabilities
    2.) Built in vapor barrier
    3.) Added rigidity to our structures shell
    If you have any questions about spray foam, drop them in the comments down below and I will try to cover some of them in a future video.

    That dudes van is immaculate. Usually these vans are run by people who work for a company so it's a mess and chemicals spilled everywhere they don't care and look like they are making Meth in the back as well as doing Meth themselves. I wish I could hire him here in GA.

    It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

    It looks like a good even consistant instalation of the foam. We have used spray foam for close to 20 years here in northern WI. We have a third party do a blower door test on all our new builds to get the Focus on Energy rating WI has for new homes. Its educating to follow the guy doing our testing around with his infared camera to see the spots that insulation might be a little weak and need touched up. If the foam is lumpy like mashed potato looking those are oftern places needing another shot. Looks like you have a good spray foamer.

      Up here inCanada government housing is actually now staying away from spray foam. They want nothing to do with it anymore. We also have the most strict regulations and inspection in regards to spray foam. In my experience, it works, it’s a great product, but comes with way too many headaches if not done or planned properly. Mineral wool insulation along with proper weather proofing is all you need 90% of the time

    • @gman8557
      @gman8557 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Les Fernandez I built my house in 2003 you’re right...I didn’t mention a few details. That was my energy cost...$500-$600/year
      My total to do closed cell foam in my 3500sq.ft house cost $11,400
      For me to insulate with fiberglass it was going to cost $3000 so the difference is $8400
      3-5 years statement... let’s use Worst case...5 years x $600/ year = $3000 in 5 years .... that was my energy bills with foam
      Compared with 5 years using fiberglass... comparable homes in northern Wisconsin $1800/ year = $9000 in 5 years that’s heating and cooling all year.
      So I’m not full of it. You just gotta do the math

    Spray foam is amazing. I’m in Minnesota and ice fishing is huge. I, and many other people, built my house very similar to your buildings. I actual recommend your Chanel to people who are building them with the pole shed siding to help with the trim work. But once mine was built I had it spray foamed. 3 inches in the floor and ceiling. 2 inches in the walls. Adds a crazy amount of rigidity and strength to the entire structure. Roof is 1/2” plywood covered in rubber roofing and after foam you can walk around up there with no flexing. And it’s super efficient to heat all winter.

Bought a 18 wheeler load of foam. Great deal. Have 200 sheets left to sell. So for walls and floor after i sell my extra. $2k to insulate floor and wall. Will be doing Triply on ceiling and blowing insulation up there.

    Working in the commercial fishing industry, we used closed spray foam in our fish holds, wet and freezer. I will say that this tech's set up in this video is #1 as the vendors we used had to have the sloppiest, messiest setups imaginable. We used to think they hired sprayers that never wore masks and loved to inhale the fumes even though they did wear them and we wouldn't have hired them without the proper safety and insurance credentials.

    What would the cost of "X" bracing each individual bay be? the price of the bracing you do to significant corners is the bracing I am thinking about. If you added that coast onto what a traditional insulation batting material. how would the costs stack up? I'm not an engineer, and I am not sure the foam would give the same rigidity as the 2x6 bracing- my HS geometry says the foam will not make the corners the whole focus of the energies trying to push the building out of square, but I suspect that to be so.

      I Know The Video You're Talking About. If You Actually Watch It, I Think The Title Is Misleading. Kyle Really Never Said He Wouldn't Use Closed Cell Spray Foam As Insulation. He Basically Said It Depends On The Factors Of The Building In Which It Is Designed. As Stated In The Video That You're Referring To, The R-19 Fiberglass Insulation Was Best Suited For The Post Frame Building He Built At The Time Instead Of Closed Cell Spray Foam Because It Had A Better Return Value For The Customer. So The Way I Understand It Is, If You Want Either Product, See What The Return Value On Each Product Is For Your Project & Make Your Own Decision On Closed Cell Spray Foam Or Insulated Fiber Glass.

      Get some more bids- the price is falling faster than the price of the chemicals that create it as it becomes more common. ICF blocks for wall building from concrete are already a better choice than the cast for forms (one time or reusable) and the "residual insulation" is a pure bonus. You have likely finished building your shop, but looking at the further bids in your own area might be enlightening for us as well.

    I know the there isn't any interior walls . My question is does the foam distort the exterior metal wall that is only backed by the house wrap?

    • @fredericrike5974

      It expands towards the oxygen that is introduced as the chemicals are sprayed out. That is part of the reason he first sprays the edges and void spots first before he lays down the broader coat- I would suspect there might be small void spots in some of the deeper voids, but with three inches of foam over it, will be meaningless.

    My only concern with spray foam is what if the water lines develop a leak? Or if you have to upgrade coax,electric,Cat6, find splitters for TV? Being a fiber optic installer and a DIY guy on my own home, these are my hold backs.

    • @gingerboyy121
      @gingerboyy121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For closed cell (2#) foam, its roughly R-6.5 to R-7 per inch. So 6" would equal out to about R-39 to R-42.

    There’s info online indicating some foam installers will not spray onto house wrap products since they’re concerned about adhesion. I’ve also read that there are additives that could be put into one of vats that helps adhesion. Since the house wrap tends to be slick like plastics I wonder if this installer did any tests in advance. It adheres best to porous surfaces like concrete and plywood/wood.

    • @gingerboyy121
      @gingerboyy121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The foam sprayed onto the house wrap could cause air pockets. Or it'll just peel right off since the house wrap is partly plastic.

    • @puddytat62
      @puddytat62 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gingerboyy121 I think in this situation the foam is really sticking to the lumber and being held in place like a picture frame at the edges. As long as it cures in one piece it may be fine I think but it just makes more sense to simply use mineral fibre or fibre glass.
