- We picked up a prairie dog a few weeks back and she's been getting pretty playful. Filmed this over about 20 minutes tonight. She acts a lot like a kitten or puppy.

I lived in France and I’ve heard people saying: "chien de prairie" (prairie dogs). I always thought they were wild dogs or something like that. These little creatures are very cute and fascinating!

Cool, I never really thought about that ,someone from another country really wouldn’t know what a prairie dog was , I get it. Like Guinea pigs, to me they are pets . but in So. America there like our chickens,they eat them ewww. I could never. I had one growing up her name was Ginger she was a redhead. I’m trying to think of an animal in France that we don’t have.
There is a town in Wisconsin called Prairie du Chien.

Prairie dogs care facts for those interested: better in pairs or more unless you can be with them basically at all times (though I'd still recommend pairs). Should be bought at 6-8 weeks and carried around, played with, spoken to pretty much constantly and hand fed twice a day until at least ten weeks to create a strong bond (if you have two, they will still bond with you as much as one would, not just bond to each other). They are energetic, attention seekers and love to play, you _cannot_ leave them in a cage - young ones need hours of social time with their humans, you should spend a minimum of an hour a day with adults. Can make good family pets as they will bond with everyone who regularly plays with, feeds and interacts with them (though it would be best not to have them in a house with young children as they have big teeth and a strong bite). However, they aren't a pet you can show off to your friends. They do not like strangers and will attack them. They should only be handled by humans they are bonded to. They need to be spayed/neutered or they will turn aggressive even to their bonded humans. Make sure to do plenty of research before buying!
as an pd owner over 10 years, i must disagree about nutering. its unnecessary. my unmolested boy is more gentle than a cat, never agressive. you need to do more research before giving inaccurate advice. my boy is relaxed and inquisitive with strangers and just wants to sniff them.

Couple of minutes well spent
I had a pair for years bought as babies & raised together. They were a delight. They're very social animals and passed within hours of each other. Per my vet they died of old age. I think the 2nd one passed from a broken heart. I still miss them. Thank you for sharing your video. Pls consider getting a 2nd one.
I have a prairie dog and from reading from the comments below half of you are ignorant about them. From my own experience. They make great pets. They're extremely intelligent, very social, and very hyper. Mine follows me around all day, sits on my shoulder while I'm at work like a parrot or sleep in the shoulder pads of my suit jacket( adorable), and falls asleep next to me and my fiancee at night. They rarely pee, and they poop hard hay pellets so they dont smell and are easy clean up. Mine hates the outdoors so whenever I open a door to go outside he waits at the door step. He's spoiled and domesticated. They are very smart- we have several cages but hes broken out of every single one. Hes very friendly with strangers, except the vet obviously. In Miami we don't have prairie dogs- until I bought one I had never heard of them- so naturally it was hard to find a vet at first but we did and now little Louie is a great addition to the family. We bought ours from a regular pet store, we didn't need a license or permission or anything, where we live they're considered a rare animal like a chinchilla, lizards, sugar gliders, etc so we paid a few hundred for him. The pet stores gets theirs from people who have had prairie dogs who had babies- so these aren't from the wild, everyone is domesticated and used to the indoor life. Overall best pet I've had all my life. Honestly just look at them- they're frickin adorable.
actually, the pet stores don't get the majority (if any) prairie dogs from breeders as they very rarely RARELY give birth in captivity. They are caught cruelly in the wild. I bought my first three prairie dogs 15 years ago when I didn't know that and since then I have only acquired rescues that come from homes that decided a PD was too much for them and didn't do the proper research. I currently have seven prairie dog rescues.
I know for a fact that the only pet store where i live that sells them gets them from his friends that are breeders and he breeds them himself. I have met the prairie dogs that were the parents to mine. One is even an albino! I do not support puppy mills or any form of cruel way of acquiring baby animals. I always do some research. We dont have rescues down here- ive seen a prairie dog listed once on craigs list and it was going for 500 and it was sold. They are in high demand down here but no one supplies them.
There is a woman who does Prairie Dog rescues in Mulberry Florida, she has many many PDs that have been surrendered from Florida pet owners who failed to do research or couldn't handle the PD once it sexually matured. You have been lucky enough to find someone who has PDs that successfully breed. As I said, that is rare. Be very careful about letting your prairie dog perch on your shoulder or climb to high heights. They will fall and many times do damage to their teeth which can lead to odontoma. May I ask how old your prairie dog is?
Angela 'Zoo' Weeks Yes, sadly that is over a 5 hr drive for myself. That is interesting seeing as its so difficult to get one and people are on months waiting lists for them down here. Yes I am aware, he only does it when I am sitting down, well used to, hes no longer a pup anymore so that went out the window lol. Hes a little over a year now, and we have a new one named appa who is a baby a few weeks old.
Angela 'Zoo' Weeks It's crazy you mention Mulberry. I live very near there and we actually ended up giving the PD in this video up to someone locally that kept a lot of them. I wonder if she may be the one we gave her to.
Like you said, once they sexually mature, they can become an issue. In our case, she got violent towards those that weren't in our family. Guests were bitten pretty badly on a couple occasions. Like blood all over the floor badly.
Of course, we could've just kept her in her cage when we had guests, but I have 3 young kids and wasn't willing to take the risk.

If my cat got that close to a baby prairie dog, it would very quickly end up as his next meal.

We had a pet prairie dog (Misty Moonlight) years ago when my daughter was growing up. She would take Misty out to the play ground with her to play. When it was time to go back in, Misty would often run ahead to be the first at the front door. When she wanted to go back to the playground she would go to the back door and call for someone to go play.
I have a ton of stories but my best is how she TRAINED my family and other family pets to spoil her rotten. She was a silly, playful, attention seeker with a great disposition and a very loving pet for many years. We sure do miss her.

6 years later after this and the prairie dog has been rehomed because of poor training and the misuse of common knowledge. It's happy now

I always heard that prairie dogs need a community to be healthy and happy.
I have a female prairie dog. The most lovable creature that Ive ever taken care of. When I go out of town I can leave her with anyone because shes sweet non territorial lovable and cudley. Shes runs around the house and hasn't destroyed anything. We got her as an adolesant not a baby as I would prefer you do because they can take some time to get used to you.

Your morning dose of cute. I'm a little concerned of the domestication of a wild animal (I'm amazed that the little critter is only destroying a cardboard box) but other than that, it seems that the little critter seems to get along well with its human and feline companions in her new home.....
All animals were wild until they became domesticated... Hamsters are now one of the most popular small pets, and they were found in the 30's... Foxes are another example of how quickly it happens.
Domestication is a surefire way to save a species from extinction, as with the Syrian Hamster. Not that I know whether any of the kinds of prairie dogs fall under the category of threatened, but still.

I never thought of a prairie dog as a pet there are literally hundreds of them around where we live in north western Montana - I have 2 indoor cats and they would probably see their next meal not a fellow house mate - amazing your cat gets along with her.
