      Brother you are so right. It's like , hey it's a tornado let's get in the pick up and go chase it. Then you have 500 vehicles chase a storm all trying to get the best angle to film from. Son what do you want to be when you grow up? Dad I want to be a crazy storm chaser, so I can pee in my pants when I see a tornado and get a rush. Shalom

      I think I would rather scream, inhale water, move frantically and drown after a few seconds. Or punch the shark, that would be more badass, but I don't trust myself on this one. I'd probably go for the screaming-dying thing, unless I'm in shallow water 😕

    Playing dead actually works with predators. Let's say for example you are swimming with your best buddy. A shark joins you guys. You knock out your friend with perfectly aimed punch. You swim away while your friend is "playing" dead to shark.

He wasn’t saying to play dead in a shark attack. That would never work because sharks can detect the electromagnetic field that everyone’s body generates & they use that to find their prey. So if you did play dead, the shark would know you were faking it.

After the kids presentation i brought up that you SHOULDN'T do that, and just got in trouble from the teacher.
    And that always stuck with me, not because i was right, and the other person was wrong, but because what the other person was passing off as the truth was dangerous, and if at least ONE person believed him, it could result in someone dying because someone thought it was a good idea to put ANYTHING in a seizing persons mouth... Sugar Spice Humans aren’t sharks natural prey. Sure, many larger sharks feed on mammals, for instance the Great White, but humans are too bony. Sharks prefer blubbery animals, as they offer more meat and protein. Often, sharks will either attack because of territory. For instance, if a female great white is giving birth in the area, males are known to defend them. They are also often curious animals. Many shark bites are from test bites, and after the shark realized we’re not the food it was looking for, swim off.

All because you've watched a few bullshit movie doesn't make you a specialist in epilepsy. What the true danger of having a seizure is your brain hitting the floor causing brain damage. Epilepsy fail lmao The concern about swallowing our tongues stems from the event of some of us clamping down while we seize and then letting go, in which case there is a small possibility that we'll bite off and choke on a tongue fragment. True, never stick anything in a seizing person's mouth, however, some advice to roll us onto our sides if possible.

    You still mustn't interact with a person who has a seizure. While the attack happens, put away sharp objects like tables or chairs. Take care that the person is not in danger getting on a road. Also call an ambulance WHILE he has a seizure. When the seizure ends its your time to take action. It is simply to dangerous interact with a person who has a seizure.

      Except it's only truly accurate if you happen to be lost on one of two specific days of the year, it can vary by quite a large margin (there's a 90 degree difference between June and December!). Better off waiting for Orion's belt to rise (the first star of the belt over the horizon is always within 1 degree of east) though that means waiting until the stars are out when you may as well follow Polaris (from which you can also calculate your latitude so you know how much further north you need to go).

      The best advice is stay where you are. Search parties, i. e. the guys who didn't get lost because of trees, have a much easier time finding a non-moving target. Building a fire, playing loud music (or singing, the more off-key the better), and generally turning your problem into an impromptu camping chill session is a surefire way to get saved. For bonus points, try to get caught skinny dipping when your found.

      Lord Cottington Generally sure. But I hope you & everyone else realizes the sun doesn't rise in the true east or set at true west. In fact where it rises on the horizon changes minutely every day. That's related to why we have seasons. Also at some times of the year depending on if you are far enough north or south it won't set or rise at all for months out of the year.

      you fall at the same speed because you both have the same acceleration, basic physics man. the main hindrance to this is trying to lie down in time before it hits the ground. their point is still valid spread your mass over as much surface area as possible.

    • @Bigandrewm
      @Bigandrewm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The elevator will be braked somewhat by cables unwinding, hitting the walls, etc.

    • @Bigandrewm
      @Bigandrewm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also: the surface area isn't the only thing that affects the damage on impact. Time taken to apply the force matters too. So, while lying flat the bone-crunching force will be applied directly to your skull sitting right on the floor, and if standing, some of that force is spread out over both time and to less vital parts of your body.

    • @wesleyking1738
      @wesleyking1738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yup, and noone has ever died from massive shock like that of having half their body crushed because all of the force of the fall is concentrated on a single point.
      If your spread out its only the weight of your head hitting the ground since its a separate point on the body with no weight around it. They actually got that one right. And heck if you're trying to avoid the head damage, lay on your stomach with your arms covering your face to cushion it, but for god sake don't stand up.

    As someone who was an EMT for a time diaphibulator paddles are definitely NOT just for those with a still beating erratic heartbeat. And it's frankly irresponsible and dangerous to instruct people against using them in a CPR life or death situation. If you ever find yourself in a cardiac emergency type situation first call or have someone call 911 then proceed with proper CPR protical while someone else retrieves the diaphibulator (assuming you are some place that has one) then follow the instructions included and continue CPR until EMTs fire and or paramedics arrive.

    • @stephaniecollins4334
      @stephaniecollins4334 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I think I get the point that they were trying to make, that defibrillation is for people who do still have a cardiac rhythm i.e. ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation as opposed to those who are in asystole/flatline with no electrical activity in the heart at all. However, I agree that this was not explained properly at all to the lay people who are the vast, vast majority who are viewing this, and who are most not past the idea of no pulse = no heart rhythm. Patients without a pulse are the only ones who (may) need defibrillation in the field like this, and people should never be discouraged from applying a defibrillator to them if available! Defibrillators available in public places are all automated and will not shock a patient who does not have a rhythm that could benefit from it. So folks, if someone hits the ground and there's an AED around, hook 'em the hell up and do what it tells you!

    • @valtteri1520
      @valtteri1520 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @stefanmakara373
      @stefanmakara373 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The longer it passes before a person received first aid the less chance they have of surviving. I think it is one minute-ten percent stuff. But from what I heard, it is illegal in America, people can sue you if you, for an example, break their ribs during crp. Which is stupid because that is a pretty common thing to happen. But when you are doing cpr (heart massages, mouth to mouth breathing) and there is no one to call the ambulance for you, dial the number, hook your phone between your shoulder and ear or put it on speakerphone and set it aside and give cpr while you wait- cpr can go for a long while and sometimes it takes a bit until someone answers your call.

    • @wesleyking1738
      @wesleyking1738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have heard that, and I believe it to be true. In Canada we have laws that protect people who are genuinely trying to help, even if they break a rib or cause other damage. Because some aid is better than no aid in the vast majority of situations.
      But ya, like stefan said, call first and if you're able do it while doing CPR. CPR usually won't save somebodies life on its own, they'll need that rescue team, so call first then work on CPR. If you do CPR first, you're just wasting time because no professional is on their way to actual revive the person.

      People may call it that, and I've seen people who fish around the mouth with their fingers for the tongue, but the fact is that the whole tongue (not just the tentacle-y part most people think of as the tongue), the root/base of the tongue, when a person is knocked unconscious, simply relaxes and "falls" back, contacting the back of the pharynx, blocking the air way. The proper thing to do is either to turn the person on their side, making the gravity do the job of removing the tongue, or to tilt their head backwards, changing the geometry of the pharynx, usually opening the air way. In some cases where a person has a "weak chin", it is also suggested that their jaw is protruded, by pushing on the angles of the jaw.

    From a medical standpoint and education in combat medicine, we try to keep trauma patients awake to prevent them from going unconscious and succumbing to shock. It's also easier to measure their mental status and whether or not it deteriorates if you can keep them with it and talking to you as long as possible. Theres also a lot of extra factors you have to worry about if they do become unconscious like aspiration for example.

    Playing dead is even _worse_ . It'll still eat you, no matter what. It gives the predator an advantage so it can eat you easily without struggle. And, note that maybe you can just go into a shelter whenever lightning strikes, and not be out in the open..? Unless, of course, there is no shelter near. I'm writing this while watching, and I thing that why people put cloth or a towel in someone's mouth during a seizure is to keep them from possibly severing their tongue because of their teeth clenching down at such force. Actually, just don't touch them at all, please. It can hurt you and the person having a seizure.

      Screaming underwater creates bubbles that will scare the shark away, flipping a shark over using the dorsal fin will put it in a paralysis of sorts and scratching its eyes could anger if or scare it away depending on the species.Great whites are extremely dangerous and it is best to either get somewhere safe or have some way to fight back like something sharp. Also remember they are extremely fast and are used to jumping out of the water to eat seals, so make sure to stand away from any edges after an encounter. If you are already in its grip, go for the eyes, not the nose. Sharks eyes get covered when the attack for protection and getting the eye will scare them and possibly blind and confuse them, giving you time to get away, or covering or clawing at their gills stops them or effects their breathing, whereas punching them in the nose do have an effect but its hardly enough to stun them like other sharks. There was a video I saw about it I will find it :)

The sound and boom was noticeable and you involuntarily react to... yet in movies they just stand there like nothing happened. I actually felt the sonic wave hit me and I was mostly in my car and only had one foot on the ground.

    Honestly, I don't think lying flat on the elevator floor would help ease the impact to your body once it comes into contact with the ground. Being vertical might cause debilitating injuries to your legs and spine but will prolly give your head and heart a better chance to not get the full force of the impact. (I'm not a medical expert though)

      Elevators don’t fall down they “fall” up when they fail. Most elevators uses 6 metal cords each of which is strong enough to support a full elevator car. All six failing is almost impossible. Elevators us counterweights to bring you back up. Unfortunately if the bakes fail the elevator shoots straight up and will collapse like a soda can. Enjoy

    • @wesleyking1738
      @wesleyking1738 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can certainly "interact" with them, just don't fight against their spasms or go anywhere near their mouth. If you need to, move them to safety like Stefan said, but otherwise just stick a pillow under their neck if their thrashing their head around a lot and wait for it to ride out. Also, you only really need to call an ambulance if its their first time having a seizure(if thats unknown assume it is), if it last longer than a few minutes, or if they have more than 1 seizure in a short span. Many people live day to day having an occasional seizure and then going back to their normal routine.
      Oh, and after the seizure, they're going to be really tired so expect that and don't be afraid to let them rest.(unless the seizure was brought on by some sort of brain trauma.... because they should have been in the hospital twenty minutes ago if thats the case)

    No you don't put anything in their mouth. You keep them from falling or banging into anything that could hurt them, and ride it out.
    "Swallowing their tongue" is in reference to when a TBI has rendered a patient unconscious to the point their subconscious is unable to keep their tongue from blocking their throat. For this you would simply do a "head tilt chin lift" or if spinal injury is suspected, a "jaw thrust" is used.

      No. Putting ANYTHING in the mouth of someone having a seizure is very dangerous because it could make them choke. You can ask any doctor, talk to an epilepsy awareness program they will all tell you that you should not put anything in their mouth.

    • @wesleyking1738
      @wesleyking1738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Do. fucking. not. touch a persons mouth during a seizure. You can straight up break or dislocate a persons jaw by doing that, a persons tongue can heal if they bite it and they're very unlikely to bite it clean off or anything crazy like that.
      And on top of that, where do you get off telling an epileptic how seizure support works? lol.

    • @RomanFanboy
      @RomanFanboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been an epileptic for 9 years and when ever someone claims you can bite your tongue off they can go fuck themselves because they know nothing about epilepsy. All because you've watched a few bullshit movie doesn't make you a specialist in epilepsy. What the true danger of having a seizure is your brain hitting the floor causing brain damage. If you see someone having a seizure you place him/her on the side and lift his head up and call 911.

    Your condemnation of hitting a shark in the snout is a gross oversimplification.
    While it is true that one should hit the eyes or gills, the snout advice is commonly given to recreation swimmers. As in summer vacation swimmers. You know, the type of people who are never attacked by sharks? If a casual swimmer were attacked all that matters is that they hit the shark. They won’t have the mental composure to think snout versus eyes versus gills. The shark will be thrashing about. The swimmer will be desperate and panicked. Logic and clear thought will go out the window.
    But let’s be honest: statistically speaking, surfers are most likely to get attacked and that is when they are paddling out. Why? Because when someone lies on their stomach and paddles on a surf board they look like a seal. And surfers know to attack eyes or gills. The same can be said for anyone who makes a living in the water.
    I want to be very clear: there is no reason to be afraid of sharks. None. It is a baseless fear. Your odds of getting attacked are less than being struck by lighting. And even if attacked the shark is most likely to bite and let go.
    My point is that your message is a trope. It is an oversimplification. Anyone who spends significant time in the ocean knows to go for eyes/gills. And the advice you condemn is still sound. A non-professional just needs to fight back. That is all that matters and all that can be done.
    Basis of my knowledge:
    I spent 15 years as a certified SCUBA instructor, dive master, rescue swimmer, technical diver, etc.
