    I'm pretty sure the two Star Wars examples were plans where "Plan A" went wrong and so everyone had to improvise a "Plan B."
    Return of the Jedi: If Leia had made it out of Jabba's palace with Han in the middle of the night, pretty sure Luke wouldn't have needed to involve himself and Lando would have gotten Chewie and the droids out or something like that. But, as Sun Tzu once famously said, when stealth fails, your only recourse is to blow up a hovering pleasure palace.
    Prequels: Sheevy P's plan at first was to mire the senate in bureaucratic BS with the whole trade blockade thing. Then Qui-gon and Obi-wan get in and mess up that, so Palpy figures he can maybe finangle his way into the Chancellorship with more bureaucratic BS. Pretty sure running both sides of a war was always in the cards for him, though; it's hard to justify killing a bunch of space wizards that people respect (who you secretly hate) without a war going on. Also easier to get your army of clones to do the job for you instead of going around lightning bolting each one individually.

    • @valeriancmw4975

      I am not calling Sheevy P anything other than that name from now on, so thank you.

      Same, to some degree, with Joker's. He's the Joker: he put bombs in a ton of people because: Joker. He had corrupt cops capture Dent and Dawes because: Joker.
      He had 20 other things he did that we aren't aware of because they didn't come to fruition.

    • @malcolmb2019
      @malcolmb2019 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thing to remember about Joker is that he didn't HAVE a plan, he just did things. The fact that things worked out in his favor is just plot and/or luck. If both people had gotten blown up, he wouldn't have cared. If both the ships blew up? Fan freakin tastic. On to the next thing. The Joker is literally insane, he just DOES things. He doesn't care about outcomes, he just cares that things happen.

    In the Empire Strikes Back one, Their plan wasn't that detailed. They had some original plans, which failed and then they had some safeguards in place (like Lando, the lightsaber in R2) in case the plan didn't work. Which it didn't. They pretty much winged it from there. It wasn't a detailed plan of "Okay we'll be here, and here and here, and we'll wait for....". They tried to just straight up rescue Han, but had a lightsaber stashed just in case they got caught. Just like maybe you keep an extra gun hidden on you in case you get caught and disarmed, but you aren't actually planning on getting disarmed. Luke didn't PLAN to fall into the Rancor pit. Gold Bikini wasn't part of the plan.

    • @spyone4828
      @spyone4828 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Actually, I think we see several competing plans.
      Like, I don't think Leia and Lando knew about each other. Lando was just there, hoping for an opportunity.
      Leia and Chewie had a plan. Luke may or may not have known about that plan, but wasn't part of it. And if he knew about it, he expected it to fail.
      And Luke had multiple plans, but not detailed plan. As in Plan C was "if all that didn't work, I'll come up with something. R2 will have my lightsaber". Plan A ("I ask nicely and Jabba gives Han back") was expected to fail, but you have to try.
      And, of course, the Force is strong with young Skywalker, so a lot of things fall into place for him. I mean, Luke didn't come up with a plan that said "And Lando will disguise himself as one of the guards," but the Force said "He could use an ally in Jabba's palace, who could we nudge into going there?"

    • @niklasmolen4753

      @@spyone4828
      They cannot possibly know each other's plans. Because everyone had the same goal (free Han) without being dependent or coordinated with each other. Biggest problem is that Lucas had no plan. He just put together something that looked awesome. Therefore, it is not possible to understand what plans were involved, there were none.

    • @Theopheus
      @Theopheus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I know this is a comedy show, but it seems like the criticisms are supposed to be semi-serious? I don't know why they came to the conclusion that the plan went as executed?

    • @FFKonoko
      @FFKonoko 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Theopheus probably that line from Luke saying he's thought of everything? Seperating the mess into unrelated plans only superficially makes it better, because then the other people's plans are even more simplistic dead ends. Lando was either there as part of Luke's plan, or...what? He was with Leia and showed up way early and then did nothing to help? They were supposed to just leg it out the door after freeing Han?
      Luke specifically sent his weapon in a droid so he showed up unarmed? Why? That's not a contingency, that's a handicap. One theory I saw was that Luke saw that he'd end up killing people and wanted to avoid it. He got too cocky and tried to be clever, forgetting that historically, he's an idiot with bad plans. See: no plan for escaping death star, and Luke at cloud city, basically all of it.

    • @SchulzEricT
      @SchulzEricT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      No, you're absolutely right.
      They sent in Leia to unfreeze him and smuggle him out; she got caught.
      Luke went in to ask Jabba to turn Han over or else. Jabba refused.
      They then went to, at least, plan C: violence is the answer. Maybe there were more; I haven't seen it in a while.

    • @PanicbyExample
      @PanicbyExample 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i mean the final plan is pure desperation of r2 hiding the saber and throwing it to him at the last second and han inadvertently knocking the son of the model of the clone army into the pit
      i think it's all hinting at the force being at play more than luke's master ability at intricate planning, that's why the movies are perpetually salvageable because there should be some way to make the force a more active element of the action than making it so much about political bureaucracy (except that works well as an exhibition of the sith mindset)

    Ok, in defense of Palpatine, his whole point was to manufacture a crisis in order for the Senate to dismantle itself (and associated inefficiencies of Democracies) in favor of the security and efficiency of a Dictatorship. Rome did this to itself accidentally over the course of several decades before Caesar Augustus did his thing.
    Also, he's a little bit clairvoyant.

    • @Alyoop1220

      There's also some heavy hinting in Revenge of the Sith that Palpatine was directly responsible for Anakin's birth. If we assume that he did in fact influence the midichlorians (leave me alone) to create Anakin, everything else in his plan does make sense. I don't know if I would necessarily choose his plan if I were interested in starting a galactic empire (seriously, he directly caused mass famine and suffering among his own people in Phantom Menace), but all of the details do fit if you make a few educated assumptions.

      Palpatine didn't want to have to hide his cruelty or answer to the will of politicians. This is why the Empire was his ultimate goal!
      He didn't have complete control of the Galaxy before Order 66. He needed to answer to a democratically elected body of political malcontents.
      Furthermore... he wanted to wipe out the Jedi... explain how easy genocide is under a democracy?

    The plan in Star Wars makes sense if you assume that the one that worked is the last of six failed plans. Each of them had a plan to free Han until they all either failed or took too long to act, and Luke sighed and decided to do it himself with space magic.

    Leah didn't need to be found out as part of the plan. Isn't it safe to assume that her being found out wasn't part of the plan, but it happened and they just rolled with it.

    As far as I remember, Sheev Palpatine's plan had less to do with him coming to power and more to do with reforging the galaxy to be able to fight the Yuuzhan Vong, an intergalactic alien species that would pose a threat in the future. He needed an excuse to create vast armies and weapons to fight them, because a Sith Lord running around yelling, "I want to save y'all!" wouldn't fly. The death star was actually meant to destroy their planet-sized cannons. I'm not saying he's not a villain, just that his plan had a purpose.

      Brett Colmer And it also gave Palpatine the ability to keep the origin of the Clone army a secret. In that the public, including the Jedi, wouldn't just stop for a moment and ask, "where did this army come from, who paid for it, and why?" He only says that he will use his emergency powers to create an army, then a finger snap later, fully supplied army pops out of thin air.

      Plus, the galactic conflict was made so that the Jedi are too busy running around the galaxy, they don't realize that their biggest threat is at their home. The Jedi were to proud to let the Senate know that they had lost the ability to sense important things so the government never became independent. They stayed dependent on the no longer relevant/useful powers of the Jedi that had been apart of their government for Millenia

    Most of these convolutions seem easily explained by the adaptability of their perpetrators. The Joker makes plans, yes, but he also makes allowances for failure and rigs the playing field so that he still has enough of an advantage to wreak his mayhem if something goes wrong. Luke's plan to save Han doesn't seem so much a well-orchestrated heist as a series of moral qualifiers he employs to justify blowing up Jabba's sail barge--"First I'll try and negotiate Han free, but if that doesn't work, I've secured for myself enough of an advantage to kill all the bad guys if I have to." And the Emperor probably didn't plan for Anakin--but when he showed up, he probably thought, "If I can lure this kid to my side, my plot to rule the galaxy will probably be a lot easier and a lot more successful, and this kid is potentially stronger than Dooku anyway."

      The "Rescue Han" plan was meant to be done when Leia unfreezes him, but Jabba had been informed, and put a stop to Plan A right there. Seriously, he weakened the Republic by orchestrating a war with the Trade Federation specifically so he could get executive powers, then he painted the Jedi as the bad guys at the end of the Clone Wars and that was easy to do because the people were already beginning to distrust them. The guy was a mastermind.

    • @julianwelton
      @julianwelton 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Exactly! The story arc of the prequels (Palpatine's rise to power and Anakin's fall to the Dark Side) is actually really good. It's the shitty dialogue, acting, and random nonsense (Jar Jar, etc) that drags those movies down. Perfect example of a great idea executed very poorly. Anyone who is interested in this side of the story should stop everything and go read Darth Plagueis. It delves much deeper into this subject and is probably the best Star Wars book I've ever read. Also, the audiobook is great for anyone who's into them. Great narration, music, and sound effects.

    • @Bazookatone1
      @Bazookatone1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      All these comments already say what I was planning to, but I'd like to add one thing; the reason that Palpatine was on both sides of the clone wars was that he engineered it to get the most powerful commercial and industrial factions in the galaxy -the government of the republic and the Jedi, on one side and the Trade Federation, techno union, banking clan etc on the other) and have them fight each other and essentially cripple each other through attrition. At the end of the clone wars, all these factions were significantly weaker than they had been, and he stepped into the void that was left and took control, while not mentioned in the films, I'm pretty sure the implication is that the resources of the various trade federation and similar organisations were nationalised and placed under the control of the Empire. This made Palpaine the de facto wealthiest and most powerful man alive.
      As for being a beloved senator, my general thoughts were that, while he had political power, it was the political power to broker deals and compromise, and he wanted "my word is law" power instead.
      Still, great video, I never tire of watching them.

    • @velemamba260
      @velemamba260 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And with regards to Anakin, I'm not sure if it's still canon, but Palpatine did know of his existence because Anakin was a result of an experiment by Darth Plageus, so he likely had some stuff going in the background to make sure Anakin found his way to the Jedi so he'd have the chance to corrupt him. Though I'll admit, that section of the plan was a little shakey.

    • @gavinezragoh5333
      @gavinezragoh5333 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Umm...no it wasn't...it was a ridiculous plan that relied on an unbelievable number of unpredictable things happening:
      1. Chancellor Valorum taxes the trade routes
      2. Queen Amidala survives the invasion, somehow, even though she's in disguise and because there's no way the Federation is going to gratuitously massacre civil servants, whom they don't know are the Queen, for fun
      3. Said Queen somehow miraculously escapes imprisonment, miraculously steals a ship being guarded by a droid army, escapes a blockade armada and ship does not get shot down, which nearly happened if not for R2's miraculous intervention
      4. Said rickety ship, containing said important Queen, does not disintegrate or crash and somehow makes it all the way back to Coruscant (again, if you forgot, this only happens because of a weirdly-coincidental series of podracing betting and trading that could have easily failed, then what?)
      5. No one on the ship responds to the fake message sent, which would alert the Federation of the ship's location, getting them blown to bits, killing said important Queen
      6. Said Queen is convinced to take the very drastic step of making a motion of no confidence
      7. Said motion of no confidence works, and everyone votes for Palpatine
      8. Naboo somehow wins its war against the much more powerful Trade Federation to regain independence, if it had failed no doubt he would look like a weak, incompetent Chancellor unable to defend his own home planet and then lose his position
      9. Darth Maul gets killed making way for the all-important Count Dooku, who is the key to starting the Clone Wars
      10. Obi-Wan Kenobi survives a huge adventure, cracks an immensely difficult puzzle that was solved because a fucking youngling coincidentally spoke up, finds the mysterious clone planet that was deleted from the archives, somehow discovers it, somehow survives getting attacked by a bounty hunter all to communicate said-important army to the Jedi Council
      11. Obi-Wan somehow gets to Geonosis, without getting blown to smithereens by a bounty hunter, miraculously discovers the super-secret plan to attack the Republic, somehow communicates said super-secret plan right before getting captured, so that the Republic is on high-alert and knows war is coming
      12. Senator Amidala, again the key to his plan to corrupt Anakin, not dying from her two separate assassination attempts and being miraculously saved at the last minute by her Jedi protectors
      13. Senator Amidala being replaced by the incompetent. idiotic Jar Jar Binks, who would be malleable enough to propose that Palpatine get sweeping emergency powers
      14. Using said emergency powers to create powerful clone army that, again, people know about because Obi-Wan defied death on numerous occasions to find the weird clone planet
      15. Palpatine not dying while he was on Grievous's ship and was about to crash-land and explode on the planet's surface
      16. Padme gets pregnant (no way they'd ever use birth control when trying to conceal an illicit relationship, right?) and Anakin simultaneously suffers from nightmares about her, coincidentally, dying in childbirth
      And probably many, many more things I missed

      I agree. I think this was actually the point of the very first scene of the film.
      The very first scene of the film is one in which The Joker carefully orchestrates a scheme in which he lies to all his men so he can screw them over by doing all the work and allowing himself to keep all the cash.
      So, we know that The Joker is a schemer and a liar.
      So, we know that when he claims to everybody that he's not a schemer, he's lying. He's the biggest schemer in the film.

      I thought it was based on Lincoln.
      Lincoln had control as president, but still designed an attack on Fort Sumpter (as he outlined ahead of time in a private letter that he would do this) but no one died in the attack, just the celebratory cannon fire after the battle... to somehow instigate the war with the south... By seizing and holding a fort that wasn't very important or whatever and killed no one... All so he could reconsolidate the United States into a more authoritarian oligarchy...
      To free the slaves is a post war rationalization, which falls flat:
      The appropriate payments to a freed slave is 40 acres of land a gun and a mule, that's combined with the cost of slaves freedom, still would have been infinitely cheaper than fighting the war with the South if freeing the slaves was actually the goal.
      Plus Lincoln's comments and letters that were overtly racist and not kind to anyone not-white make it perfectly clear that he was a bitter racist and just wanted to fight the South for more power and control.
      Where does the Death Star fit in? Well, Lincoln also threatened to bomb and destroy any place that decided to meet about leaving the Union... Killing all, down to the women and children.

    I never really considered the return of the jedi thing as a masterstroke plan. I consider it more a matter of layering failure. I think the initial plan was just sneak in and rescue han.
    Lando hid as a guard to just keep an extra eye on Leia.
    R2d2 had the lightsaber just in case they needed it and luke figured he wouldn't get it in properly without sneaking it in in a droid.
    Luke came in chiefly to rescue Leia after she failed to get Han. He thought he'd be able to mostly mind trick his way through the situation but fails and is almost fed to the rancor.
    After Luke kills the Rancor he was taken to the sarlacc so jabba could end the madness all together. Luke sees that all of his pieces are in place to save the day even though that wasn't actually the plan.
    He certainly didn't plan on Leia killing jabba.

    Now that Roger is back can we bring back Daniel so he can finish covering Palpatine’s ridiculous plan that included living Snoke puppets, Han’s emo son, a super Death Star, and an entire fleet of planet destroying ships that don’t know how to go up? I’m assuming he’s been keeping himself in a Han Solo stasis pod this whole time so he should be fresh.

    I've been watching your videos for a while now, and you seem to bring up the Joker's plan in "The Dark Knight" a lot; in After Hours, in OPCD, in...other things. Anyway, I think it's important to remember that he didn't have one really big, complicated plan; he had several small, simple, concurrent plans.
    First, he needed to get Lau out of the MCU (Major Crimes Unit, although he also shows up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if you're paying attention). So, he has explosives sewn into the big fat guy and tells him to go get arrested. He was probably just going to wait until the guy got arrested, call the bomb from *outside* the police station, and then storm the place to get Lau.
    Second, he needed to draw out Batman. Whether he really believed Harvey Dent was Batman or not, he knew that attacking and capturing Harvey would do that. Either Harvey would turn out to be Batman, or Batman would show up to save him.
    Third, whoever Batman was, the Joker knew he loved Rachel, so he planned to have her captured. The firing squad at the Commissioner's memorial were wearing Rachel Dawes nametags, so he knew Batman would find out she was the target. Either Harvey was Batman and he could tie them both to barrels for some other nefarious reason, or Batman was someone else and the Joker could force Batman to rescue "one of them" as part of his general "I want to screw with people" goal.
    Here's the kicker. Getting captured himself was never part of the Joker's plan, no matter what Gordon may have thought. Obviously, these plans could be better run from outside of jail, but really, being in jail wouldn't affect them that much. The separate rooms with the barrels was set up ahead of time. The fat guy bomber was set up ahead of time. But like I said, they were separate plans. Once the Joker was in jail, he decided to combine his plans. He just needed to keep a close eye on the clock to make sure he sent Batman away in time. Once Batman and half the cops went looking for Harvey and Rachel, he just needed to get to a phone before they returned. Getting captured complicated his plans, but like I said, it didn't matter.
    Does that make sense?

    I think that the "Breaking Han out of Jabba's Palace" plan wasn't so much a plan, as a lot of plans that kept going wrong, but had a lot of robustness. Like, Leia was supposed to sneak Han out of the palace, but she got captured. But they had agreed before hand that if she didn't come out by a certain time, the Luke was going in.

    I think it's a simple as this: Palpatine is a Sith. THE Sith. So what he wants is to bring the galaxy into the dark side, by taking control of the government, killing off the Jedi, and subjugating the galaxy into a state of fear and oppression. How else would he do it? It's not just as simple as "he's evil", but it's pretty close.
    BTW manipulating the Chosen One was just a way to circumvent the prophecy which he knew of, so it was the smart thing to do to cover all his bases.

      Yeah, Dooku could have stayed Palpatine's apprentice and Sidious would have been fine. (Anakin was just a fine addition to his plan) Dooku was incredibly powerful and a capable warrior. As for the Death Star, it was to control planets in the stead of the senate. As for being a politician on Naboo for years, he was also training to be a Sith and murdering his family and other things. All the stuff he said was plain wrong most of the time and just sounded like he wanted to make the plan look bad.

    3. Palpatine was a Sith master so of course he distinguished himself. Jedi mind tricks. And he wanted to be emperor of the known universe so he had to create a huge conflict which he then solved making himself indispensable. I always assumed that Palpatine just changed and reworked his plan to suit the situation as time went on. Perhaps originally he intended to use Padme as his puppet chancellor, subtly influencing her, but it was even better when he got to be chancellor himself. Also, Palpatine probably didn't need Anakin to kill the Jedi, Anakin was an added bonus. He only wanted to kill the Jedi because destroying the Jedi order is one of the main Sith aims.

    One of the things you've overlooked in the overcomplicated workings of both Luke and Palpatine is that they can see visions of the future. I have always assumed that their plans include using the visions as guides to an unfolding path to achieve an outcome they desire.
    Overall, I still cleave to the notion that Jar Jar was actually the Uber mastermind behind the evil plans, but that Lucas backed off using him that way when he proved unpopular.

    "Everything is preceding as I have foreseen!"
    Palpatine had the power of foresight, which was fortified with the spread of the dark side of the force across the galaxy. You'll often hear the Jedi complaining about how clouded their ability to perceive things through the force is, or how blind they felt going into the clone wars. The dark side is impenetrable to a light side user. But Palpatine was a Sith. His actions were preceded by his own ability to see the future. It was only when the galaxy was flooded with hope and light once more in the form of the Rebel Alliance that he couldn't see past his own arrogance, and he mistook his own delusion of turning Luke to the dark side as yet another vision of the future.
    As far as his goals were concerned, he wanted to destroy the Jedi, exterminate them completely. The only way to do that was to spread them out as thin as possible across the galaxy, and smash them between two armies. The Jedi were blinded from seeing the future, or across space, but that didn't change how fast they could move. An entire army of droids wouldn't be enough to destroy them, as can be seen with how quickly just a single Jedi and his apprentice could cut through the peak of that technology in episode one.
    Clones on the other hand were living beings, and were interpreted by the force differently. Droids taking aim and firing was more like a falling rock that they suddenly were aware of supernaturally, whereas a Jedi would sense intent from lifeforms to determine their threat. But what if the person firing at you had virtually no intent or ill will? A living person that brainwashed could theoretically take a Jedi by surprise. Only a force user would even be aware of this tactic, so it makes sense that only the last Sith in existence would make it a part of his scheme. Even so, you'd need an army of brainwashed beings, and they'd need to act like normal people and befriend the Jedi first to be able to even catch them off guard once you give the order to kill, and their programming kicks in. The clone army was the only way to eradicate the Jedi Order so widely and all at once.
    The only way a Jedi would march with a clone army would be if it were an army of the republic. The only reason the republic would need a clone army would be if it were at war. Thus, to leave nothing to chance, Palpatine literally took control of the republic as well as the heads of the major alien economic powers, and slammed them against each other in war, creating the perfect trap for the Jedi.
    The Clone Wars were just a meat grinder designed perfectly for the Jedi Order.
