  • The making of a Duelyst attack animation. The process took about a total of 7 hours.
I use Graphics Gale to animate all of my sprites.
Keep up with what I'm working on on twitter (@AdamKlingPixel): / adamklingpixel
Glauber Kotaki sprites all the awesome designs! You can check out what he's up to here(@unseven): / unseven
You can try out Duelyst for free! Download it here:
    duelyst.com/
And for anyone who wants to further explore the animation, here's a download link for the .gif and the .gal files. The .gal opens with Graphics Gale and will give you access to the different layers I have separated out, if you want to look at those.

Awesome video and explanation! Knocking 7 hours of work down to a 15 minute video doesn't do the effort put in justice, but I hope people can appreciate how much work is required for a single sprite.
Would it be possible to publish more of these in the future? It was very entertaining to watch, and they'll also be great sources of ideas and inspiration for aspiring animators.
The art and animation in Duelyst is definitely one of the game's strong points. Looking forward to many more epic animations in the future!

For the past half a year I've been making my living from freelance pixel art and specifically mostly character animation.
This tutorial really got me inspired a couple of years ago, and without it I doubt I would have gotten to where I am today. I still use many of the things I learned from you and I even come back to this tutorial once in a while to hear again exactly how you look at some of these concepts. Specifically this time I came back to look at the example at 10:01. I love what you said there: "The pose that she's in, isn't the one she wants to take; it's the one she has to take."
Thank you Adam for making this amazing tutorial.

Hahaha that's awesome, I'm really glad to hear that!
Lol I haven't thought about the things I said in this video in a long time, some of them make me cringe a bit. Not that I necessarily disagree, but I just might explain it in a different way these days. But I'm glad it was helpful to you and that it played a part in your adventure into freelance pixelart! Best of luck in your continued growth!!

I had an Idea for the aura glow.
Each time the Character throws a stone he puts some of the energy into it until the Aura is depleted into the rocks.
That would mean when the lighting strikes the character would no longer have the aura and would then slowly regain the glow until the character is back to the starting frame.

After many years, this is still one of the best summary/overview tutorials on pixel art animation (and Duelyst pixel art is god tier!).
Dunno about others but I would be willing to pay money for a definitive, expert online course on pixel art+animation by someone like yourself, who could could take it beyond basics like ”don’t draw jiggly lines” and maybe go for a bit more complete curriculum. Current offering on places like Linkedin Learning, Udemy, Skillshare and the rest is unfortunately lacking / a bit uneven, so there’s definitely room on the market too, think about it :).

I'm trying to do animation for the first time, no schooling or mentors to give me advice... I made a 2d character in Krita who can walk towards the player or to the right, and also can rotate smoothly from facing the player to facing right. I now want to make an attack animation where the character swings his sword, but I realize quickly that his canvas is not wide enough! The canvas is already 32x64 and my character takes up 100% of the height and sometimes 100% of the width depending on the frame. So... how would one go about doing this? Should I create new frames in a different file using a canvas of a different size for the attack? Or should I increase the entire canvas size for all of the animations? Seems like it would be wasteful of computing power to have a walking animation that's 64 px wide when 32 is all that I need... is that what you would do? I notice that your canvas is much larger than your character. Do you trim it before adding it to the game? Do you ever use sprite characters that are made of frames of canvas of differing sizes? Sorry for the long list of questions but I'm really new to this.

Hey Adam I've been trying to get better at my pixel artsmanship (if that's a term) and I've noticed there seems to be different styles of pixel art are there specific terms for these?
For example Both Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and Duelyst both categorize under "pixel art" but they don't look the same..... if that makes sense. Thanks :D

    • @adamkling6684
      @adamkling6684  8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Hi thanks for asking! The reason there's different styles of pixelart is because pixelart is a medium, like oil painting, and not a style. A lot of times people talk about it like pixelart is a specific look, but it's not! Each pixel artist has their own style.
There's not a great way to describe style, but you can talk about it in terms of the technique and look of the art. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is by Paul Robertson, and I would say his style is much tighter than Duelyst. He uses black outlines and anti-aliasing on his characters, and because of that they look less "pixelly", as in it's harder to see each individual pixel.
Duelyst's style is Glauber Kotaki's, he designs the units and the animators try to emulate the style that he uses. His style is much more loose. There's no outlines or anti-aliasing, just chunks of colors rubbing next to each other. I would say his style is much more "pixelly", you can easily see all the little squares.
Style is a combination of a lot of things and can be sort of hard to describe, but I hope this helps!
