My GR is 9 months old today. He has NEVER walked on a leash as I hoped he would, he's always either lunged and pulled or he lays down and refuses to walk at all. Kibble won't work for him, he would spit it out. He doesn't even eat it from his dish unless doctored up with vegetables, fruit or meat. He's been through 5 different kinds (Thank you, Chewy!) and he hates each one. Anyway, I'm going to try the walk 3 steps and treat for a while in the house to see if that makes any difference. I don't have the funds to take your courses, unfortunately. I'll do what I can because he's a sweet boy but I'm about at my wit's end with him. Blessings.

Yes! That game is one that we recommend as a start to all leash skills! Try it with really high value treats like boiled chicken, cut up cheese or hot dogs. If it's moist and smelly, it's probably worth working for, according to your dog!

I think I will try the 1-2-3 game. The shuffle game seems like it might be too much for my pup and confuse her.

Give it a try! The shuffle game is really just encouraging her to come to you and rewarding her when she does. So anytime she approaches you, you can reward her to encourage that behavior.

I don’t understand how I can play “shuffle” at home but when we go for a walk we usually meet half a dozen dogs along the way (and even more over-friendly humans) and i don’t know how my puppy will be able to focus with so many distractions.

The more you practice in increasingly distracting environments, the better your puppy will do! Start inside, but then if it's going well, do it with food cooking, then an open window, then outside in a quiet area, then outside with a slightly less quiet environment, etc. Build up very slowly until your pup is ready for all the distractions of a walk. In the meantime, do decompression walks in quiet spots to burn off energy and meet her mental enrichment needs.

I am going to try 1-2-3. I don't really understand the other one.

The shuffle game is designed to get your dog's attention and draw him/her back to you. Then you can reward! You do this when the dog gets to the end of the leash, to teach him/her that end of leash = return to human.

I’m confused about the shuffle game. What if the dog doesn’t look back when you stop and just keeps the leash tight? It would be impossible to shuffle in that scenario.

Suggestions on how to stop a dog pulling from excitement just from being on a walk. IE: my dog pulls on the leash as soon as we get the leash on to take a walk. No matter where the walk is.

The tips in this video can help you with that! This will come down to working on leash skills inside, in a quiet environment, before you attempt a neighborhood walk (which are usually very exciting). In the meantime, before leash skills are ready for the neighborhood, try implementing decompression walks to burn off her energy.

Will these help when i have 2 pups from the same litter?! They are pulling so much thay they are yanking me and my husband. They were getting better but as of late they have taken a turn for the worse. I think they compete with each other and "play" too much, but when they are separated they pine for the other horribly.

Yes, you can work on the games with both of them, but training will have to take place separately before they can do it together. We have a great video on littermates with more important information about raising two dogs of the same age. th-cam.com/video/x3nefq0CeyU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=D7P-dXIDWLH6G_Y5
