    I'm convinced at this point that no tab books are correct.
    That's why I love tab archives. They have a rating system. Though it's a bummer when even none of those are right. Ah well, still beats 20 years ago when we had to do it by ear and hope for the best. Keep up the great work Mikey! 🤘🔥🤘

      I have a living colour book that is practically a piece of art. Everything is tabbed out including the intro to love rears it's ugly head. Vernon's solos are tabbed out which probably wasn't easy lol. This was the Time's Up book (the better of the first two albums imo) I had two at one point. Bought it on eBay for $6 near mint with the cd... Unreal. I think it was Allan Stutsky that transcribed it. He did James Brown foundations of funk book. Oh and I bought the Vivid tab book. Unbelievably terrible. I returned it to seller

    Little tip : If the string skipping to the open B from the D string is too tough, just hit the b note on the g string at the 4th fret. It's less right hand movement. This is how I used to play it live and actually think it sounds better. So - open b while fretting the G sting, and 4th fretted G while finishing the riff on the D and A stings.

    • @readgeoff
      @readgeoff 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed this is how i play it as well. Much easier than going back to the open B and the sound of it to my ear is a bit nicer for some reason. Slightly "softer" or less trebley with the thicker string.

    This album single handedly got me to pick up the guitar. Definitely one of the greatest albums of all time. And if you listen to it with headphones you can hear slash in one ear and Izzy in the other. I just looked at Songsterr’s out of curiosity (where I learnt it from) and it seems to be fairly correct. The only difference being the last few times you were to hit the open B string on this video, it tells you to instead play 4 on the G string. I can’t quite tell if that’s wrong or not to how it’s actually played.

    Well done and thanks for solving this mystery!!! Two main take aways from this:
    1. The picking pattern is super important to get the correct feel and groove.
    2. As the riff moves down... Don't cheat by using the "B" note on the 4th fret of the G String. Keep going to the open B to get the right sound and feel.

  • @justrichardcharles
    @justrichardcharles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember trying to figure this one out too. I decided to play the first two descending notes (the B and the A) on the D string (9th and 7th fret) instead of G string. Makes it easier because right hand skipping is more consistent, but also makes for a more consistent tone between the melody and the pedal B note, with all the melody notes being on wound strings. I'm sure I've seen slash play it this way too in an interview somewhere.

    I remember that tab, this riff is so hard because you need to play it perfectly for it to sound good, absolutely perfectly or it sounds sloppy right off, the slight variation between the two can be disregarded as long as you can keep it razor tight, I saw a recent video where elderly Slash ripped right through this with ease so Slash still has it

    Same thing with U2. You always are trying to compensate for the delay when learning it, when in fact you have to learn it without it first. That is so hard to do because most riffs without an extreme noticeable delay are easy to learn.
    You almost have to have a different approach with this.

    I feel like this has been going on since tabs were used by lute players, maybe longer. In the 80s, BBSs were full of posts complaining about how Hal Leonard effed something up and how's it actually supposed to be played. Concert videos are probably the most reliable source of information when it comes to figuring tabs out.

    I have found it entertaining to see the difference in his demeanor when he does a video on something like this, compared to a live stream. 💩Because he is very wholesome in these and will joke about anything in live streams.

    Hey,
    Yup, agree this is how to do it. You have to string skip pretty fast, but if you can get it down, you don't even need the delay and people will still recognize it.

    I played this wrong for over 20 years thanks to incorrect tab, until I stumbled across another TH-camr a few years ago who played it the same as you.

    Thank-you....I was playing this riff in a cover band back from 1994-1997. I was playing it notewise your way EXCEPT I was playing the B note on the 4th fret of the 3rd string, which did not have the same aural effect; your way is superior. I was always perplexed because I consider Wolf Marshall to be a superlative transcriber, as shown in the great Appetite book. However, I didn't use any delay of my own control back then. We always had an in-house sound man who supplied the effects from his console. ...David

    Two good solos that use delay are "Just Like Paradise" by David Lee Roth (with Steve Vai) and White Lion "Baby Be Mine". On another note, try some REO Speedwagon. Gary Richrath was awesome. Check out "Back On The Road Again", "Ridin' The Storm Out" and "Roll With The Changes" to name a few.

      White lion guitar parts were incredible. Far better than the average end tier hair band.

    I had that tab book too, I didn't know any better back in the day and thought it was correct. If my memory is correct, it was tabbed by Wolf Marshall. He's tabbed a few things in his time and a lot of it isn't accurate.

    I find if you start it like you did but when you get to the D string if you play the B notes on the G string at the 4th fret with your baby finger it's way easier and less string jumping. Great video !! Thanks

    The day my friend asked me to play the pink floyd bass riff for "one of these days". I did so without the effect.
    His face was priceless. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    And the final lesson of the video, if you struggle with this riff, you are at least as good as Slash when he's high as a kite!

    The video that I realized the TAB book was completely wrong was when I watched the Slash amp signature protoype video: "The AFD 100 prototype" for a few seconds you can see clearly how he actually plays it 😀. GReat video Mike! You rock!

    HAHAHA!!! I bought that tab book in 1993, the year I started playing...At first I thought it was an "effect" issue....it took me months to figure it out....no youtube back then.....
    Keep it up, man!!!

    Slash starts this way but I do believe that when Izzy comes in with his little intro notes, slash changes to the way the tab reports. Anyone also noticed this?

    Yep, That bad tab got me too, basically one of the main reasons I ended up not playing guitar anymore is that exact reason. Pretty much every song I tried to learn from tab books was wrong and sounded nothing like the recordings. I wish there would have been everything that is available now when I was trying to learn how to play. TH-cam was just starting basically about the time I quit playing.

    I owned the purple cover tab book too, but mine was from way back in like 1997. It was missing a lot of stuff. In this song it was missing the lead guitar part that comes just before the 2nd solo.
