Rowdy deserved more film roles like this and everyone who made and worked on They Live deserved better than being called a "b-movie". This is one of my favorites of all time and made a lasting impression on me.

Yu Toob I was born in 83 and remember the 80s a bit different. Yes it was the conservative Reagan years but I remember here in NY those playboy mags were not covered (especially in those little mom and pop cigar shops ) us kids used to pretend to be looking at comics but we'd be peeping the playboy covers instead. Those same cigar shops used to sell me cigarettes and lotto tickets for my parents at age 5 if I came in with a note from my mom. We were allowed into R rated movies with no adults and all my preteen/teen babysitters dressed like a mix between Madonna and Axl Rose (basically looked like slutty biker chicks) Adults had no problem smoking and drinking around us kids and we were allowed to stay home by ourselves without worrying about people calling it neglect. Yeah television was careful not to use swear words in movie trailers but I just remember the 80s being really politically Incorrect and for the most part it was great! Maybe it's where I grew up but my experience in the 80s was anything but conservative. Nowadays our country is more liberal however we are more politically correct. I can't imagine if I was growing up nowadays and getting away with the stuff I did as a child in the 80s and 90s.

They Live is great as an enjoyable piece of 'trash' cinema - as a serious political/social commentary (which Carpenter) intended it to be, it's an embarrassment; badly written, badly acted, terrible special effects, and an incredibly biased political agenda. First off, the overall 'anti-consumerist/capitalist' message of the movie is so opinion-based and subjective (not to mention cliche) it's downright nauseating. I commend They Live for at least bringing its agenda to the forefront of the movie, but apart from that, it's trite. Consumerism is always demonised in movies and TV (ironically, as these are consumerist industries), with only ever the bad sides of consumerism depicted - nothing is ever said of the good sides to consumerism, or the benefits it brings us. The irony is that the people who consider themselves to be anti-consumerist also consider themselves to be the minority, the 'rebels' - when in reality, anti-consumerism is the majority view. People just like to flatter themselves that they're 'rebels'. Secondly, the more sinister 'ideas' this movie promotes is the idea of the 'Illuminati', which is one of the most ridiculous and unscientific beliefs of the modern age. People who think there's some secret group of people controlling and masterminding society are simply deluded, pattern-seeking individuals trying to make sense of a world they feel uncomfortable in. They see society operating like a machine so they assume that someone "_must_ have designed this machine...!" (no different to the way creationists think nature _must_ have been designed because it works so well), because the idea that the 'machine' was not designed, but came to be naturally as a result of human beings breeding in large numbers and needing a way to function with each other, is too scary for them. Ironically it's the people who believe in the Illuminati that are scared of the truth - that the world is _not_ controlled, but in a state of barely contained chaos...

I loved this film as a kid. You know when you look for a film or cartoon you liked as a kid? When you watch it with adult eyes it spoils your memory of it? Well this film is just as great now as it was when I was a kid. Still sad about Piper dying. He was just the best wrestler and his character was amazing. A heel or baby face both were great to watch.

They Live is a weird movie for me because I like it, but I find its 'points' are utterly asinine and disagreeable. The anti-consumerism stance is so popular and cliche right now I find it baffling that those who take it still consider themselves to somehow be the 'rebels'. To be truly rebellious today you'd have to be _pro_ -consumerism, which I guess makes me something of a 'rebel'. I don't see how any rational person can honestly believe that consumerism is this utterly 'evil' thing, when you consider the myriad of benefits to humanity it has produced. Consumerism is neither good nor evil, it just 'is', it has its good sides and its bad sides, and whether one outweighs the other depends on your point of view - but the anti-consumerist crowd act like consumerism _has_ no good sides, and that it's all 100% 'evil', which is retarded.
Tell the citizens of N. Korea, a truly non-consumerist, anti-capitalist, socialist society that +they_ are the ones that 'have it good', and that consumerism is the 'evil' system...

This movie is more relevant than ever today and deserves a remake.

+Todd Ryan No, he wasn't. He was briefly a good horror film maker. That's it. They Live is great as an enjoyable piece of 'trash' cinema - as a serious political/social commentary (which Carpenter) intended it to be, it's an embarrassment; badly written, badly acted, terrible special effects, and an incredibly biased political agenda.
First off, the overall 'anti-consumerist/capitalist' message of the movie is so opinion-based and subjective (not to mention cliche) it's downright nauseating. I commend They Live for at least bringing its agenda to the forefront of the movie, but apart from that, it's trite. Consumerism is always demonised in movies and TV (ironically, as these are consumerist industries), with only ever the bad sides of consumerism depicted - nothing is ever said of the good sides to consumerism, or the benefits it brings us. The irony is that the people who consider themselves to be anti-consumerist also consider themselves to be the minority, the 'rebels' - when in reality, anti-consumerism is the majority view. People just like to flatter themselves that they're 'rebels'.
Secondly, the more sinister 'ideas' this movie promotes is the idea of the 'Illuminati', which is one of the most ridiculous and unscientific beliefs of the modern age. People who think there's some secret group of people controlling and masterminding society are simply deluded, pattern-seeking individuals trying to make sense of a world they feel uncomfortable in. They see society operating like a machine so they assume that someone "_must_ have designed this machine...!" (no different to the way creationists think nature _must_ have been designed because it works so well), because the idea that the 'machine' was not designed, but came to be naturally as a result of human beings breeding in large numbers and needing a way to function with each other, is too scary for them. Ironically it's the people who believe in the Illuminati that are scared of the truth - that the world is _not_ controlled, but in a state of barely contained chaos...
This trailer is pretty damn good, especially with the build up to the shot of the alien at the last second. Sends chills up my spine.

I loved this film as a kid. You know when you look for a film or cartoon you liked as a kid? When you watch it with adult eyes it spoils your memory of it? Well this film is just as great now as it was when I was a kid.
Still sad about Piper dying. He was just the best wrestler and his character was amazing. A heel or baby face both were great to watch.
It woke me up back then... Nice to see that decades later, more are doing the same :)
