I don’t understand why koreans expect him to speak perfect English. Like, he *is* a korean citizen (in part he’s also ethnically korean) so he speaks Korean. There’s literally no point in asking him to study harder English and speak it without esitation, because this is something they wouldn’t ask to a korean-looking guy. I know they joke a lot on this kind of shows, but if it was funny before now it isn’t anymore. They joke about this thing everytime he’s on a show and people should know by now he was born and raised in korea.

They seem to be talking about the general assumption that everyone seems to be making when seeing Hyunmin in Korea. Not just Koreans mistaking that he's a foreigner, but foreigners assuming that he's a fellow foreigner also, and asking him and talking to him in English. And in general, Koreans study English super hard. I know Koreans who can speak fluently (even if they're shy or have an accent), because they took English lessons after school ever since they were young .

I don’t understand why koreans expect him to speak perfect English. Like, he *is* a korean citizen (in part he’s also ethnically korean) so he speaks Korean. There’s literally no point in asking him to study harder English and speak it without esitation, because this is something they wouldn’t ask to a korean-looking guy. I know they joke a lot on this kind of shows, but if it was funny before now it isn’t anymore. They joke about this thing everytime he’s on a show and people should know by now he was born and raised in korea.

They seem to be talking about the general assumption that everyone seems to be making when seeing Hyunmin in Korea. Not just Koreans mistaking that he's a foreigner, but foreigners assuming that he's a fellow foreigner also, and asking him and talking to him in English. And in general, Koreans study English super hard. I know Koreans who can speak fluently (even if they're shy or have an accent), because they took English lessons after school ever since they were young .

Sara H. Yes, korean people can speak English pretty well too. But there are still a lot of people who don’t understand a word of English. The thing that really bothers me it’s not the fact that people assume he’s a foreign, because I understand this. But when he already said he doesn’t speak English, that he was born and raised in Korea two minutes before and then you get angry to him for not being able to speak English properly, that’s just annoying. Imagine being him for a moment. It’s like an offense to your own identity and culture. People expect him to have a different culture from theirs, even after knowing that’s not true at all.
