  • 30 years removed from the era when both Robert “Chief” Parish and Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell were roaming the parquet together, and winning titles, they reunite for a looooong discussion on CLNS Media.
Cornbread has become a master at turning a formal interview into a casual discussion and it shows no better than in this podcast episode with one of his closest friends and the man he dubbed, “The Chief.”
Discussing a variety of topics, Max easily disarms Parish and the two rap on as if they were still hoisting banners at Boston Garden.
    Show Topics:
    Catching Up
    Michael Jordan: The Bully
    Len Bias
    Reggie Lewis
Robert Parish Speaks Out on his Run In’s with the Law
Leadership Comparison: Larry Bird vs Michael Jordan

Mainly because I was young and dumb and didn't know very much, but it wasn't until the 1986 Finals that I realized how good Robert was and how important he was to our success. Kevin McHale obviously was a great defensive player, and he made 6 NBA All Defensive Teams. Parish made none. But that series against Hakeem, not only Kevin but Bill Walton as well, they couldn't do anything to slow Hakeem down. I remember being kind of stunned by that - not because Robert was doing a good job - but how much trouble he was giving McHale and Walton.
I had watched Robert outplay Moses Malone in the playoffs the previous season, but it wasn't until that series against Hakeem that I started to truly appreciate what he meant to the Celtics.

I agree. Underated. Great hands, amazing off the ball., always finished, knock down short jumper. Just goes to show how GREAT Hakeem was. He embarrassed EVERYONE, including David Robinson. Hakeem is on my all time 5(as a 4) with Bird, MJ and Magic.

This is one of the best, if not the best, sports interviews I have seen. "I played with some of the best MFs, that ever walked on a court, and I'm supposed to be in awe of you?", and Chief started to name names. I laughed and grinned through 75% of this interview. Good stuff.

@@seanogrady2629 Agreed. I have used this fact, when somebody gushes over Jordan, a few times. Nobody gives him much grief over it. Wilt Chamberlain did the same thing, more often, plus pulled down well over 20 rebounds, and many declared him a "Loser".

I was always impressed by how Robert played. No matter what happened, 99.99999% of the time he kept his cool and just played on. No dramatic reactions or antics or excuses. As a 15 year old watching the Celtics in 1983 and on, that was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen in life at that point. Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox was also that way.

I was and still am a Lakers fan. I started watching pro ball with the Lakers team that featured Chamberlain, West, Goodrich, &Baylor. I rooted for the Celtics also because they were coached by Bill Russell who I believe was the first Black coach in the NBA. I hated the organization when I learned how racist Boston was-some fan had literally placed a bag of shit on Russell’s bed in his newly purchased house! BUT I always respected individual players of that team-Hondo, KC Jones, Archibald, Bird, McHale, Parish, DJ. and Max. Plus I learned so much about the game from the master, Red Auerbach. He had a feature at halftime of NBA games called Red on Roundball. When I started to play myself, I pretended to be JoJo White! The basketball played by the Lakers and Celtics was the best version of team basketball I have ever seen. And this from a Chicagoan and HUGE fan of the goat MJ! Thanks Cedric for this interview. Love you two guys…

What makes this video so great is that it is obvious that there is a genuine deep respect, friendship and brotherhood that these two men have. I'm a huge Chief fan and there was so much that I didn't know about Chief that came out in this video it was awesome. Max did a great job with the interview. Like when I found out how Chief not only stood his ground w/MJ in practice but gave him a bunch of s*** talkin as well!! Mad respect!! It felt like you were just comfortably sitting around a table at someone's house w/Max & Chief talkin about all their experiences together and apart as NBA players and just straight up cool dudes. I'm an even bigger Chief fan than I was before. His level of self-accountability and just pure honesty makes it clear that this great and legendary NBA HOF'er is funny and insightful, but more importantly, a man of great integrity. A couple of things I remember was Rick Barry bitching at the refs the whole time, him getting into a fight with Sidney Wickes underneath the basket we were sitting behind, and then him flipping us all the bird while leaving the court when both him and Sid got ejected.

Wow what a great interview. It was finally nice to see Robert Parish after a long long time he is one of my favorite players for he don’t smile so much and his lips are never dry. There always Vaseline up. I have a picture with him when he came to New Bedford meet and greet he smiled and got a little laughter from him when I told him my name is Twinkles he told me who names their kid Twinkles little did he know that’s my name. Thanks for being honest about your life and the mistakes you made. Your apology is accepted. We live and learn and grow older and mature. Just sad that no one hired him for anything and he is right if he was a different color he would of went on with his life with other options. And even tho he was a person who kept to his self and what ever may have happened along the way team mates need to look out for team mates. We all have a past in ourselves we may not have liked or proud of what we did long as we owned it and learned from it. I wish him well in all he may do or doing. Lots of love coming your way Twinkless

If I had a show or a podcast Chief would be my first 3 guest. I would call and call him m him. No prejudice in my body. Chiefs one of my favorites of all time. He deserves tremendous respect!!! Nuff said!! I will say though that the comment he made about being black is not correct at all. He just waited to long to get involved with broadcasting. The best shows on tv or the internet today are hosted by former black players. Chief was and is a great man. I honor him with nothing but respect!!!

Cedric, Chief, I was a basketball fan who supported the Lakers and respected your Celtics. You represented the team game concept. The game is now played by gifted " celebrities " to whom idol worship/ endorsements take precedence. Michael Jordan was the image Big Business needed/ created to milk the idol worshippers in exchange for this floor show.I no longer see commitment, respect, hard work and pure love of the games. I thank you guys for your contribution to my beloved game that I still play and coach @68yrs. Love, respect, blessings my beloved brothers. 🙏

Lot of people dont know this , but back when Len Bias passed his mother said( at a speech in Norfolk ) that Michael Jordan was one of the first to send the family flowers . MJ was watching and knew his abilities and possible greatness .

As a kid in the bay area. I was fortunate enough to Parrish play with Golden St. and watched him with the Celtics , consumate professional and quietly always had numbers at the end of the night and one of my faves

@@aljilhano5822 ok since you love mj and yes he's tied for number 1 for me with 2 other guys. Compare what MJ did his rookie year to what Bird did his rookie year. Everyone wants to argue that same point, but refuse to look at the argument year for year

Heading west on the Mass Pike and we passed Robert Parrish. We slowed down and he pulled up along side our car. I held up a Basketball and he smiled and slightly nodded up and down. Then I held up a small pipe and his smile went ear to ear and he moved his head up and down fully. Love him.

Thank you for the memories, Growing up in the late 80's and through the 90's I didn't know how special that time period was. I rewatch the 60's through the 90's games and I lamented the degradation of the league's quality.

Love hearing Parish, and getting a glimpse at his personality. That said, I need to know what brand luggage he used in the 80's. It must have been of good quality, because it held-up to some serious traveling by the chief.
Never has a tall man taken so many steps to cover such a short distance. 😇
