    How weird that just days after you complain about screen crunch in Sonic 2, Sega deliberately announced they were making a Game Gear with a 1 inch screen specifically to play these Sonic games on. I think Sega doesn't like you, J. Not after that Sonic 2010s video.

      Sonic 1 & 2 were originally Master System Games, and although Sonic 1 modified the game a lot to avoid the screen crunch issues, Sonic 2 had basically zero changes at all, meaning cheap deaths are everywhere and screen crunch is a constant issue. In the game gear game, they even made Sonic’s sprite smaller.

    I've always loved the 8-bit Sonic games, and I think the same holds true for anyone who grew up with a Master System or a Game Gear. Here in Brazil the Master System was very popular and there are lots of people who even prefer the 8-bit version of Sonic 1, even though I don't agree, but I think it's a very solid game. I think you should've used the Master System versions of 1, Chaos and especially 2, as the wider field of views makes things a lot better, but oh well. I don't really agree with your opinions on these games, but it's interesting to see the perspective of someone else who didn't play these titles when they were new.

    Okay, this might sound crazy, but I like to look at handheld and previous-gen console games as a sort of "Secondary Main Series" instead of lumping them in with the spin-offs. They're companions, and the fact that they play like the "Primary" Main games tells me that there's something here that, at the very least, shouldn't be ignored.

    I first played all four of these games on Sonic Adventure DX, as these were all included as unlockable bonus content. These games are one of the reasons why I'm in the minority of people who prefer the Game Gear over Nintendo's Game Boy. I'm a Sega gamer, and while I will acknowledge that the Game Boy has tons of games worth playing, the Game Gear was in color and had a brighter backlit screen. Plus, it was the only way you could play Sega games like Sonic the Hedgehog on the go at the time.
    BTW, I have managed to beat Sonic 2 on Game Gear many times, and that's with the happy ending if you collect all six Chaos Emeralds. Regardless of which ending you get, the game still slaps you in the face with the Game Over screen, complete with its losing jingle. Not exactly a great reward for beating the game.

  • @NintendanGX

    Fang the Sniper has only been in a handful of games, and yet he's still my favourite character. Such a fun villain, and I really hope he takes the spotlight in a future 3D Sonic game. I've got the perfect story role, voice actor in mind and everything (Chris Patton btw, who played Greed from FMA and Kliff from Fire Emblem Echoes).
    Like could you just imagine hearing his sly, weasely voice snickering and saying "Sorry Sonic ol' buddy, but these Emeralds are MINE now... Bean, Bark, let's hit the road!"

  • @the_wake_
    @the_wake_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good review! FWIW, here are some thoughts as someone who played the crap out of every Sonic game on Genesis and Game Gear when they launched.
    • *Sonic 1:* Hard agree. Not the same quality of the mainline Genesis games, but a completely functional and decently entertaining Sonic game on the go.
    • *Sonic 2:* Mostly agree. Backbreaking difficulty largely due to the screen crunch. I somehow managed to beat this game as a kid after spending an insane number of hours on it, but because exploration is so punishing I always got that bad ending. Holy shit that depressed the hell out of me as a kid.
    • *Sonic Chaos:* Actually pretty hard disagree, but I definitely see why we had such different experiences. By this point I'd poured so many hours into the Sonic franchise (16 and 8-bit) that I didn't find it overly challenging. In fact the level of challenge made it way more fun for me since I could breeze through anything that wasn't Sonic 2 8-bit. But I can see how without that amount of experience it would be so much worse. Also I always poured over instruction booklets for my games so whatever gimmicks that laid out I would have been familiar with.
    • *Sonic Triple Trouble:* Right on the money. Holy shit that was a good game. Probably the only one on the list I'd go back to more than very rarely if I hadn't lost my Game Gear sometime in middle school. I'm glad you liked it so much after slogging through 2 and Chaos.
    • Also I just wanted to bring a little more attention to how damn good the music is in these games. Hearing that again was a of pure nostalgia straight to the heart.
    Anyways, one important thing to remember is that we were playing this on a handheld, so being able to play Sonic in the car, on vacation, and to our parents' appointments where we had to sit for an hour was amazing. And as you noted in your video on the mainline Genesis games, gaming back then was a lot different. You'd often only have a few games, and you'd play the crap out of them. In that sense, I even came to like Sonic 2 8-bit because overcoming that absurd level of challenge, memorizing boss tells and death trap locations, kept it challenging over a long number of portable play sessions. Not that I think that made it *good* design, but I did eventually come to appreciate it in that way.

I really wanted to love it. I loved the hang gliding Sonic on the cover and loved if I could get to that level, but that damn first boss just kept on killing me. It was so frustrating as a kid, but I love Sonic and kept trying anyway, mostly because I’m stubborn likkkke that. Never got to play Sonic Triple Trouble,, though. I kind of wish they would remaster or remake, officially, Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble, especially Sonic Chaos. I think that was my favorite. I loved playing as Tails, using the rocket shoes, the bonus stages were fun, being able to fly as Tails, Sonic having the Super Peel out, I think for the first time. I’d love for the hang gliding gimmick would have mad a return, though.

    Chaos is the only one of these I would call meh. I LOVE 1 and 2, and grew up with TT. Then again, I've been playing the remakes of the first two games made by Creative Araya, which are a much better experience. Since they were remade on a new engine, the screen is no longer close to being an issue, the controls are miles better and there's a ton of extra content.
    For Triple Trouble, there's a guy that's remaking the game in 16 bit, as if it were made for the Genesis after 3&K. It looks SO good.

    Ah yes, the Game Gear games. These were _MY_ introduction to the sonic games. You see, I bought the Game Gear knowing that it would dominate the Game Boy as it was a much more powerful system and it played games in colour.
    This is why I sit and judge people who act like system power and graphical fidelity will determine whether a console/handheld/etc. will do well at any time. I also was interested in the N64 (more powerful than the PS1, less powerful than the Saturn), Dreamcast (best console of its generation), Jaguar and 3DO. Though, only have had the N64 and Dreamcast.
    Though, maybe this next generation, the most powerful system with the more graphics will be the solid choice. I mean... perhaps Bullwinkle will pull a rabbit out of his hat as well.

    I had Sonic 1 on the Master System II first, back then, because I didn't have a Mega-Drive yet. Seeing your gameplay here of the Game Gear, it was a lot more playable on the Master System. So it's a bit 'sad' you base them soley on the Game Gear.
    Although not so much based on speed like the Mega-Drive version, Sonic on the Master System was (and still is to me) a fun game, a very nice platformer.

    i think you should have used the master system versions for the games because they didnt suffer from screen crunch but otherwise great vid

  • @TheJadeFist
    @TheJadeFist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Screen Crunch wouldn't be a problem if they designed the game around it, like smaller sprites maybe, zoom out a bit to show more, or w/e. That's one thing Nintendo has always done a bit better than Sega is that they make a moveset and physics of the game first, and then design around it. A smaller viewing resolution shouldn't be a game crippling problem.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is about screen crunch is it usually just applies to handheld games that were ported from consoles. Those first three Game Gear games, Mega Man & Bass, Sonic Genesis, they were designed with a *TV* in mind and they just...don't change any of the level design to accommodate it. Even if the player sprite is gigantic, even if in Sonic it gives you a two-frame window to react to anything, they port it and call it a day.
      Which is why Sonic 1 8-bit suffers the least because it's intentionally slower than a regular Sonic game and in one instance *fixed* the screen crunch causing outright game-breaking status from that stupid vertical Contra rule in Jungle Zone...which baffles me why none of the other games I mentioned cared about it when the first one did.
      We can get portable Mega Man that works with Xtreme and Zero (I dunno how the Classic 1-5 games hold up), we can get portable Sonic that works in Advance 1 when it's not blazingly fast and Stealth's Sonic 1 tech demo as well as Triple Trouble far before either of those.
      Besides, with the Switch and smartphones being a thing nowadays, all handheld gaming has HD resolution, which provides absolutely zero excuse for this kind of thing. It's a problem that's thankfully a relic of the past. So Sonic Mania can play just as well on a PS4 Pro as it does taking it with you on the bus with a Switch. Or better yet for these old games, the...oddly multiple ports of Sonic 1+2 on the Switch.

    • @TheJadeFist
      @TheJadeFist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UltimaKeyMaster Well everything today is using a 16:9 aspect ratio, so even the cell phone vs a console at different resolutions are still basically the same in terms of just multiplying the geometry or higher resolution textures. It simplifies things alot. As the developer doesn't really have to care or change anything.

    Disagree. I much prefer the zones in this to the ones in the Genesis version. And Sonic handles differently on the GG and Master System, I wouldn't say he handles badly at all. Chaos and Triple Trouble are where it's at it though. My two favourite 90s Sonic games. Everything is polished and perfected.

    My first videogame console was a Sega Master System, so naturaly it was there where I had my first experience with Sonic. To this day I love that game. It took me a decent amount of time to finished it, since I was super young. I actually prefer that version to the Genesis version, I think the map and the hunt for the emeralds made the experience more natural. Just my personal preference though.
    Funny enough, I had kind of a crush on Tails, cause I thought he was a girl. Since I used to rent my games I had no access to the manuals, and in Sonic 2 you must rescue him, so I just assumed he was Sonic's girlfriend. That single thought gave me enough motivation to finish that game.

  • @TheJadeFist
    @TheJadeFist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stage gimmicks can also not be a problem if you introduce them to the player in a safe way before requiring them to understand them in order to not die. These Sonic 2 8-Bit problems shouldn't be problems if the team making it used a bit more thoughtful level design.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's probably what he meant by the lack of tutorials. It was almost a blink-and-you'll-miss-it critique but I instantly understood it from him being a huge Mega Man fan. A good platformer will ease you into a new challenge through entirely natural gameplay with little risk before amping up the danger.
      Also, even when these Sonic games get designed for the Game Gear, there's still one over-arching problem..."such a lust for laziness, TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBES" being a substitute for actual level design.
