    FEATHERSTONE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - The new West Yorkshire police headquarters is actually in Featherstone Town parish even though it is only a stone's throw from Normanton Industrial Estate.
    - The remains of the gateposts of Ackton Hall can be seen at the edge of the field where I was standing in one of the shots.
    - Ackton used to be called Aketon and some people still pronounce it that way.
    - There used to be a fever hospital on the opposite side of the road from Ackton Hall which was demolished and houses have been built in its place.
    - North Featherstone Gospel Hall was converted into a house by Ian Clayton, the writer and broadcaster.
    - The former pub in Streethouse had to close as it got struck by lightning
    - Number 2 Wakefield Road is opposite what was used to be the town's baths next, Behind the same property was a factory owned by Citra
    - The new houses on Stoborough Crescent replaced the old Girnhill estate that stretched to the East to the edge of Purston Jaglin. They were condemned around 2002 because of structural problems. It was somewhat controversial at the time but in the end it had to be. They were in a style typical of the era they were built in.

    Great video, it gets some bad raps (some of it probably justified) but it really is a great place with great people. Some interesting bits of info regarding the Featherstone Rovers ground. Those two stands you are facing at 15:52 with the white bits holding up the roof were originally part of Scarborough football club stadium. When the football club went bust, Fev bought the stands and a group of around 10 or so retired pensioners (some ex-Featherstone players) took down the stands at Scarborough, transported them to Fev, lengthened and flattened the pitch at Fev, and erected the new stands all in their free time and at no charge! Just one example of the how much this club means to the locals

    On your drive around part one the new houses @17:19 to @18.20 on Stoborough are replacing the old Girnhill estate that stretched to the east to the edge of Purston Jaglin. They were condemned around 2002 because of structural problems. Some had been done up by their occupants. Others were left as mere shells as people moved out. It was somewhat contraversial at the time but in the end it had to be. They were in a style typical of the era they were built in. That style you have featured on the channel a lot.

      Ah yes, I know the style you mean. Typical pit terraces

    • @emilduncanbrown8571
      @emilduncanbrown8571 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheVillageIdiot not the old terraces though the semi detached style like you have seen in Havercroft and places such as Hemsworth Stainforth and South Kirkby.

      @TheVillageIdiot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emilduncanbrown8571 ah yes that would make sense. The terraces of course would still be there, that kind of building was made to last

      @@TheVillageIdiot yes there were a few on Girnhill Lane itself and they are still there but the main part of the estate were of the prefab style which sadly weren't designed to be able to withstand the mining subsidence that came with the closure of the colliery. That event signed their fate. The subsidence was extreme tbh and because the houses were much older at closure date it made it worse. You have probably noticed that the estates that survived were all in areas where the collieries had closed at a much earlier date so the houses were younger at that moment.

    My great grandfather brought his family, including my Granny as a child to Ackton from Shropshire to find work for himself and sons at Ackton Hall Colliery. They lived in the converted stables at Ackton Hall and later some of the family lived in apartments in the Hall. The remains of the gateposts can be seen at the edge of the field where you were standing. The village used to be called Aketon and some people still pronounce it that way.
    The old wall next to the road was from the time of the Hall. There used to be a fever hospital on the opposite side of the road which was demolished and houses built. North Featherstone Gospel Hall was converted into a house a long time ago by Ian Clayton the writer and broadcaster.
    There was a lot of interesting information in your video, hope this adds a few more snippets.

    Hi what a great video, I'm really enjoying the series.
    I've wanted to visit Featherstone for about 15 years but always chickened out as I passed on the M62 .
    My ?XG Grandmother in her late 80s, was killed crossing the railway line between the racecourse and her home in Featherstone. (This was in the late 1800s). I'd love to know more about the area, and if there might be a grave stone for her locally.

    There are somewhere online photos of the old estate back in the day. When we have full internet back I'll be able to search them out if you want.

    That pub in streethouse had to close cos it got struck by lightening. It proper blasted the roof and gable end off.

      Lucky it stayed standing. I remember moving the guy in. It didn't seem in all that good a condition (and this was a few years ago now, about 9 I think)

    As far as I know Whitwood is now part of Castleford and unparished. The church of St. Philips on Whitwood Lane was demolished in the 1970’s. The old rectory is a children’s nursery. There is an interesting terrace of houses and The Rising Sun pub designed by the renowned arts and crafts architect C.F. Voysey.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, most of it is. There is though a small part that isn't, that being the bit I was referring to. Its just to the North of the M62 ans has streets like Pasture Way and Checkstone Avenue on it (and lots of roundabouts!) Residential primarily

      @@TheVillageIdiot That’s interesting, I didn’t know that.

    • @emilduncanbrown8571
      @emilduncanbrown8571 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's right. Pre 1974 Featherstone was an Urban District with a boundary with the Borough of Castleford. Part of that boundary is now the boundary between Featherstone Town parish and the unparished former Borough of Castleford. The other boundary bit was with Normanton Urban District now Normanton Town parish.
