- Garry Adelman and Dan Davis of the American Battlefield Trust are joined by Andrew Dalton of the Adams County Historical Society to talk about the action at Willoughby's Run during the First Day's Battle at Gettysburg.

Hi, loving your efforts. Thank you. I am a Brit who visited Gettysburg in 2001. Strangely, I met two North Carolinian folks in my hotel. They wanted to go to Gettysburg and offered to be their guide. The irony was not lost on them or me. It took them to Willoubys' Run where their forefathers fought. It was emotional!!

Monuments to traitors have no place on an American battlefield. Many Confederate dead were eaten by feral hogs, digested, and excreted onto the battlefield. A fitting end to traitors.
@@willoutlaw4971 Can't agree with you there. This field, and other battlefields, are the ONLY places where such monuments have any justification in being. Here is where the battle happened, and it's important that both sides be represented. In town squares and courthouses across the South, where the sole purpose was to intimidate Blacks and remind them of their 'place,' not at all.
My great ×3 grandfather on my mother's side fought and was wounded with the 27th North Carolina in Anteitum, he survived the war and passed in1889 58 yrs old I've always been facinated with the civil war and no one does it better than Battlefield Trust thank you.

On the matter of knowing the Divisions and brigades, I guess I have it easier than most since I studied Orders of Battle extensively in the early 2000s. I also played Sid Meier's Gettysburg extensively.
Monuments ! Save them all ! if wanted removed ? ( CSA Monuments ) move them a special location that we Civil War interest people / groups can still view them ! Or sell them to Civil War interest Groups, or private CW interest people. I have traveled to many southern CW locations, the CSA monuments list Units, Battles and CSA soldiers' names, statue, details of uniforms, weapons etc. I hope the many CSA monuments at battle sites will not be attacked / removed !
Please save them. Support CW history. Once they are gone, so is important military history ! For 9 years I was a CSA Re-enactor, nothing political just different and for enjoyment, I’d still be doing if it had not been for my back, causing issues (service VA connected ) stopped me from doing any longer !

Those men are American history and did their duty. I doubt if any soldiers owned,or wanted a slave. Only the rich and greedy. That was NOT about slavery but states rights. I believe if the south had won the US and CS would be great allies and the black people would be free
A year or so ago, I asked someone knowledgeable about the feasibility of moving Confederate statues onto the battlefields. Any new statues have to go through a lengthy approval process. (Maybe Congressional approval; if so, forget that.) Realistically, I think the NPS does not want any more controversy than they already have; e.g., with Manassas having the Stonewall Jackson statue. Aside from that, too many statues clutter the battlefield. And now we see the controversy is not limited to Confederates. As for why the Southerners fought, I think it's somewhat like the Marine Corps order of allegiance: Unit, Corps, God, Country, in that order. Not that I was in the USMC. I learned that from a Jack Reacher novel.
To my thinking, a battlefield like this is the ONLY place where Confederate statues, markers of the battle flag are appropriate, and I would be absolutely against them being removed from here.
Barry, I'm in absolute disagreement with you on this one, and there's no need to again go down that rabbit's hole. In literally EVERY Ordinance of Succession passed by every Confederate State, they listed the maintenance of slavery as the only reason they wanted out of the Union. The only 'State's Right' they were interested in was the 'right' to keep other human beings in chattel slavery. Plenty of officers and soldiers in the Confederate Army had slaves at the time of the War, and every man in the army knew exactly what they were fighting to keep. Did the majority of the poor men in the ranks have slaves? Probably not. But they had certainly been sold a 'false story' by those 'rich and greedy' folks you mentioned. The ultimate 'Rich Man's War, and Poor man's fight.'

I am dutch ( Netherlands Europe) and would like to thank you for this great piece of history.
Ive been to Gettysburg countless times and participated in the 130th, 135th, 140th, and 150th Anniversary reenactments. My great great uncle was a Sergeant in the 19th Indiana of the Iron Brigade and was killed in the fighting near the Lutheran Seminary. He's buried at the park in the Soldiers National Cemetery.
I had 4 relatives in the 55th Virginia. Only 1 was at Gettysburg, that was Ruffin Clarke who was wounded in the jaw on July 1st. He was in the hospital for the rest of the war. He also had 2 brothers in the same company, but they were not here at the time, 1 died in 1862 of bulbous fever.
Henry Cox who is my great great great great grandfather was was also in the 55th Virginia, he was married to the Clarke's sister, Martha. He deserted after Chancellorsville because according to him, he thought his enlistment was up. He was later captured in September 1863 and put in prison but rejoined his unit in early 1864.
My friend and I were there last week!! Thank you for preserving this historic event.

Three of my great uncles fought with the 26th North Carolina. Granville, the oldest was wounded three times at Gettysburg. ( Nine times in the course of the war. ) Held in reserve on day two, the three brothers are in Pickett's charge on the third day under General Petigrew. Thanks so much for filling in so many gaps in their service. Really informative!

Man, I wish I had the money to go back there right now. It's been over 20 years since I walked the grounds and would love to see it at least once more.
You'll have a real treat if it's been that long, as the Park Restoration Project in the early 'aughts' has brought the whole place closer to its 1863 condition than it's been for at least a century. As someone who is involved in such things as my living, I can say that Gettysburg right now is probably the best preserved battlefield on the planet!
@@elcarto22 That's awesome. There is something about Gettysburg. It got to me when I first visited with my family at 11 years old. It peaked my interest in the Civil War. Then I went back in 99 and I got that same feeling again. It almost made me want to stay. I love this channel for their passion and bringing a way more interesting history lesson to get the new generation to peak their ears, and for helping to restore the battlefield. Thank you too if that's what you are involved in. My goal is to get back within the next year.

I walked the Battlefield at the 155th two years ago, when we got to pickets charge, standing at the high water mark and looking over the feild where so many died, I was moved to tears; I couldn't help but wonder if Lee knew that this I'll fated charge could have been avoided by an early retreat or by swinging around and coming up on their flank
Lee could have avoided defeat by not leading a band of traitors into the U.S.A. to attack Americans. Thank you General Meade for your service to America 🇺🇸. Long live the U.S.A. Death to treasonous traitors.

My 3 X Great grandmothers Sallie Rose Robbins, her sister my 3 X great
aunt Charity Rose Womble her husbands brother Issac Womble was in the
20th North Carolina Company D he was a a sergeant. He was wounded on
July 1st. He later died in 1865 in Washington Reed Hospital. I have a
photo of His brothers also served in the war. He is burried in Nash
County North Carolina.
My great-great-grandfather was at at Gettysburg but he was wounded on May 2nd at the Battle of Chancellorsville served with the 12th North Carolina

Everybody's a fast talker. With such expert commentary, there's little reason to revisit the battlefield. As for the battle itself, Lee should have went on the defensive after the first day.

When I was younger , I was given the opportunity to see Gettysburg on a field trip.,and able to see Antietam, and see several others , and Appomatix courthouse as well as Ford's Theatre. I didn’t know they were getting battery fire that early in the fight. They should’ve known at that point they were fighting the Vanguard of the army of the Potomac at that point. I wouldn’t think town militia would have batteries.
