I played this in high school, 20 years ago. By far, probably my favorite out of high school years. I was a freshman - played third part clarinet. I'd always want to cry during the third movement! My brother was a senior, trumpet, and we'd get emotional over the whole thing. It was so cool to play that together. He loved the trumpet part (first). Sure miss those days.
Played this piece in1978 in the TMEA Region 17 Symphonic Band . I was 1st chair French horn on my way to Area tryouts but the week before I made All-State Choir. I really love Alfred Reed.
Our high school band played this 30 years ago in an old church. I can still remember my hair standing on end at the end of the first movement. We trumpets TOTALLY overplayed it. Band director snarled at us, but it was my most memorable musical experience.... Rock & Roll!

Played this last year at LGPE with my high school wind ensemble. loved playing the horn solo even though it was so nerve wracking. This is my favorite piece that I've played.
I'm playing this in the ESYOWO. The song is fantastic! We do movements I, II, and IV cause of time constraints but I cant describe how much fun the fourth movement is ( at least the bassoon 1 part is) A really great song! 9:10 is the beginning of the wonderful movement!

I played this with the Nova High School Symphonic Band in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at State Competition and and then at the International Competition in Mexico City in 1980...Got straight 1's...of course. Loved this piece...being the timpanist.... any wonder why? When it's played right - (and many bands I've heard play in tin the last 33 years play it very wrong) - it still gives chills.
This is an excellent recording, but when you are very picky about this music, it just feels like the tempo in the third movement was not nearly consistent, intentionally or not. Parts of the movement were often rushed because people did not play the triplets long enough. My *unnecessarily* nit-picky 2 cents.

I play trombone and oh god are there some fantastic trombone parts in this piece. This guy really knows how to write for brass.

高3の時の自由曲で、私は1st Tpで、2楽章を吹いてたら、Tbの子が合わせてきて、だんだん人数が増えていき、合奏みたくなっちゃった💦
結局2楽章はやらなかったんだけど…
