    I am honoured to say I was there in the audience with my best friends soaking this up back in ‘92. I was 21. Dyke were the favourites leading into this in a way, playing Odin under James Watson. Then this happened. Still the most musical brass band live contest performance I’ve ever heard. The recording doesn’t do justice to the quiet playing and the climax in the middle moment. Thank you Howard Snell and Fodens, 32 years later. ❤

    Btw after 15 years of playing for maestro Howard Snell, for me simply the finest musician I have ever had the privilege to work with, this was the only time I saw a tear in his eye in a performance.

      I can tell you that many of us had a tear in our eyes too, listening to your solo in Mvt II. I and my colleagues in the Saskatoon Brass Band (Canada) would get together with a bottle of Lagavulin (back when we could afford it) or Highland Park, and put this on in a darkened room with a good stereo. We would be overwhelmed by the performance; meanwhile our spouses would sit in another room and snicker at our quasi-religious devotion to this music. We aptly named these gatherings Brass Band Geek parties. Time for another, methinks. Thank you for this and your other wonderful contributions to music.

    7.20 mins.... Some of the best tone progression/melody progression I have ever heard in a brass band piece. First time I heard this piece it blew my favourite test pieces out of the water, and immediately became my favourite. Well played by all in the band. So amazing. So brilliant. Well done Philip Sparke. I hope that one day my composition skills can get as good as you.

    I had the pleasure of being in the audience that day. Sat though every performance and this own choice was a knockout (although I did hear rumblings that the 2nd movement was a bit kitchy).I still think it is top class...and the last movement just blows me away, even when I played it! -Philip Sparke knows how to write fantastic brass band music, always exciting, technically difficult at whatever level and generally good on the ear.

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often find Sparke's compositions a bit formulaic and in some cases a little lacking in the substance department (they just don't catch my feelings and take me on a journey, they're transparently testpieces - often still fun to play, though) - this one is comfortably his best writing.

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assure you, it's still special - that performance would probably still win 9/10 contests.
      The final section is rock hard, to get that kind of clarity and at that speed is absolutely sensational. The middle section is far more difficult than this makes it sound, especially with the warmth and control that this displays (a warmth that is sadly lacking from certain bands right now, especially right at the very top...)

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tylinar Jacobson I'm not sure I agree - there are lots of clean performances of technically harder pieces, but the trend towards low-risk approaches with the aim on not losing points means the truly hair raising, emotionally moving musical performances seem to be lacking.
      Cory in particular I find rather sterile and whilst sensationally good technically, the sound and expression just doesn't satisfy me, personally.
      YMMV

      In the rigid structure of brass band, just like in any other mass musician group, there is little room for maneuver in a written piece. But, solo work is different. Philip Sparke gave this solo to trombone for a reason, Sparke had a dream, and Nick Hudson recognized that dream. Nick connected. Some things you just cannot convey on a sheet of manuscript.

      With respect, and as good as Desford 86 performance was, this was so much more of a definitive emotional performance. Which is why it’s the benchmark. It’s like someone saying there’s a better performance of Energy than Desford in 91. There isn’t to this day, and may never be.
