Easily one of my favorite band pieces I've ever played, and I've played it in both high school and college. Words can't describe my love of Alfred Reed's music.
*sigh* I just played 1st clarinet for this on Saturday for my college's wind ensemble concert and it was SO fun! Love the Rag! And our band director decided to throw an accel. at the end of Gallop... Can only imagine the sheer epicness that resulted :P
I played first horn for this a while back. it’s very taxing but one of my favorite wind symphony pieces! the 1st and 4th movements are so loud and powerful, a juxtaposition to the 2nd and 3rd. the 2nd movement horn solo is one of my favorites to play
Thanks very much for uploading this piece. I can't remember if we performed it for UIL or not, but I remember it very well and with great fondness. I played 1st Cornet (I believe that's right. Seems like Reed gave the more prominent parts to the cornets instead of the trumpets in a lot of his compositions.)
Wonderful!! My band played this last year for a contest. our favorite was the Rag, but we loved the piece as a whole. i played the oboe for this piece. I loved those solos in Melody.
I'm pretty sure these TKWO recordings were made WITH Alfred Reed conducting. It's interesting to hear it how the composer proposed. First Suite for Band has to be one of my all time favorite band pieces ever. Seems it's not easy to find good recordings of it either.
2nd chair clarinet: Going to be performing this suite in a few weeks. Don't really care for Rag and Gallop. melody is beautiful. Just with we weren't playn mov.1 at an 85 tempo :-/
0:00 - I - March
2:25 - II - Melody

O 2° movimento é muito belo, toda a peça é incrível.
It's nice to learn on clarinet lol but tough. I love the whole thing even tho I have a panic look when I play the whole time lol

I die for the dissonance in March every. Damn. Time.

We're playing Rag and Gallop, but not melody or march.
Same here. Actually, my band put time and effort into March, but it was pulled from our concert order, so now it's just Rag and Gallop.
It is a ragtime they are pretty slow -_-
make it double the speed ;)
