  • It looks like it's time to change the strings on my Collings MF5 mandolin. I wanted to make sure that I got the right strings. I knew I liked D'addario but they have so many different options! I decided to a whole bunch of them and see which ones were the best mandolin strings! I demo and compare the EJ74, the EXP74CM, and the new D'addario XT XTM11540. Let me know which ones you like best!

    These songs are awesome! I played violin for 7 years... went fishing in Alaska and lost some of my left hand. Someone gave me a mandolin and I've been in love with it, can't wait to play like this! Just gotta get used to my hands demotion. Good stuff!

      do not give up! be patient, yes, but do not give up! music kind of just becomes part of you! Continue cultivating that "gift" that was given to you.

    I liked the sound of the EXP coated strings the best. They had the brightest and most vibrant, clear tone.

    Thank you!! This was exactly what I was looking for. I absolutely love the sound of the XTM11540. I will be getting a set of those for sure. My first mandolin will be arriving tomorrow and I'm certain I will need to spend some time setting it up, so while I'm checking everything out, it will be the perfect time to install a new set of strings. Thank you, so much.

    Awesome video, Ralph. I have a 2005 Collings MF5V and I've been looking at the XTs. Great playing, and your mando sounds awesome. Thanks!

    Thanks for posting this. Until a few month ago I was always pleased with the very rounded sound and playability from using the EJ74’s on my Northfield. I then changed to EXP74CM’s expecting them to be even better. However, they sounded pretty good at first but then quickly seemed to become ‘tinny’. Last week I put on the new XT’s but, to my ear (as well as the wife’s) they again seem far too bright. Perhaps it’s just my instrument but I’m going back to the 74’s! (P.S. I also have 74’s on my 1956 Gibson and the sound is spot on!). Thanks again; I always enjoy your posts..

      I love Northfield mandos! I got to play Adam Steffey's a few times when I was at ETSU. They seem like they might be a little "woodier" than Collings? I was feeling the opposite... I thought I was getting a little more warmth from the XP's... I think different mandos react differently to each string...

    Thanks.
    I like the sound of the first set best.
    The long haul, may be the winner.
    I am wondering if 10s. are stable.

    One mandolin I have likes the ej74 but the other does better with ej73. I think the XT sounded best on your Collings. I think I’m going to try them on the next order.

    I think if you were to put fence wire on that mandolin, it would still sound very well.

    Great video, Ralph: I'm thinking about giving the xt's a try, but I'm wondering if there's any problem at the nut with the extra .5 on the E string? Thanks.

    Thanks for the comparison. Have you tried D'Addario EFW74? It's a flatwound type. 11-15-26-36

    EJ74 the brightest, XTM11540 the richest and fullest; EXP74CM in between -- best compromise string? Ask me tomorrow I'll probably give you a different answer. They are all good strings and in a blind test no one could tell them apart probably?

    EJ74 had more character than than the XTM and coated ones kinda sounded life less Almost vapid.lol imo

    Do u know where to get mandolin strings with red silk at the ends?

    • @jonathancollins9057
      @jonathancollins9057 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe Martin? I know their "Marquis" sets have the silk near the ball end on the guitar strings.

    I listened a few times and I'm not sure I can really tell much of a difference. I can't use phosphor bronze much myself, my hands just eat them up in a couple of days.

    • @rwcarrmandolin
      @rwcarrmandolin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if anything, it's definitely very subtle. It there was a bit more difference in the feel and a little in the volume. but that's obviously hard to catch in a vid! do you use 80/20 or the nickel bronze?

    • @pilotdrew85
      @pilotdrew85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rwcarrmandolin I am going back and forth lately between Nickle Bronze and monels (both Martin and D'addarios). I like a 11.5 E and 16 A and so far you can't get that in monel, but I like the tone of them. NB is hard to beat though.

  • @deblane401
