  • In this video we visit former locations we have previously visited. We have new information on these locations. We re visit Stockport and the Winters shop to see the refurbished wooden antique figures. We visit the Manchester Bury Bolton canal where we will look for the former Kilcoby New Outwood brickworks and also Rhodes canal locks where we find a hidden surprise. Plus and update on upcoming videos

Boy talk about a wrong turn.... The Winter's building is really coming along, top notch job on the figures. At the brickworks, if those walls could only talk and tell their story. The brickworks segment was like your early work, just you, your camera and your great narration. Martin, while on your adventures maybe bring along a metal detector to look for little bits of the past. You are so proud of you home--Manchester. This was a great watch, thanks for your hours of work......

Martin that would be great for you to go back once more to Winters to record the chiming of the clockworks, as you say the final missing piece. They certainly did a great job on the building.

OMG the figures at Winters are *amazing* 😮. Similar to how I remember them as a kid, will be lovely to hear them chime again 💗 Love your humour in the vids and lovely to see a tiny glimpse of my now old friend, Wet Earth Colliery. Have you looked at all at the Navigable Levels between Worsley and Farnworth? 52miles of underground canals but apparently virtually nothing visible remains with the exception of the tunnels at Worsley (*very great danger of gas). They are an incredible feat of engineering with boats travelling across multiple underground levels using a ramp+lock mechanism. It’s a lost industrial wonder of the world to me! 😍. Imagine building that in the late 1700s-early 1800s. Brilliant vids as always, Martin 💗

Hi Martin, the building occupied my Margaret Barlows tea gardens still stands adjacent to the small access road to Giants Seat Garden Centre. This road follows the line of the infilled MBBC canal towpath! Indeed a large monkey puzzle was situated in the grounds beside this building (now the garden centre). Steven Parker, MBBCG.

From what I can see, Margaret Barlow's Tea Rooms is still there by the garden centre, I just found a very old eBay listing picture of the tea rooms, and zooming in on Google Maps with the 3D view, I spotted the exact same building as in the picture, it's the building at the end of the main car park. I think it now has a full width conservatory at the front, it's not clear from the Google 3D model, might just be a tent thing, but the building has one small chimney on top, three windows on the 1st floor!

    Hi Martin,
I have been able to find a small amount of reference to the New Outwood Brick Works, on a page about the Outwood Colliery:
"Following the acquisition of the colliery by Outwood Collieries Limited, a series of improvements were carried out (...) A completely new brickworks was also built, being brought into production in 1927."
    Regarding closure:
"The colliery became part of Manchester Collieries Ltd in 1929 and it was around this time that production ceased, and the colliery was put on a care & maintenance basis.
However, an underground fire developed which ate its way into the shaft pillar, and in 1930 one of the shafts collapsed. The headgear fell into the shaft, the winding rope slicing through the engine house wall like a cheese cutter.
This event put an end to any hopes of bringing the colliery back into production, and it was formally abandoned in 1931.
Operations at Outwood (the coal washing plant) finally ceased in 1956."
So potentially the New Brickworks could have been abandoned as early as 1929; or as late as 1956. Unfortunately that's the only useful reference I've been able to find, referring to the New Outwood Brick Works.

Giants Seat Garden Centre, is run by the Kidd family, I was in the same class at school as Stephen Kidd, so he would be 66 now. I know that area so well down there before I was banished to the south coast. I was out walking that area one day with the dog, and there was a splash and a stag, swam across the Irwell ( complete with antlers) and got out on the opposite bank and stood looking at me. I did get a picture but it was the early days of smart phones, and the quality was just a bit better than piss poor. Another occasion I was standing on the metal footbridge over the Irwell near the sewage works, that carry’s people across to the Clifton Marina side watching some young men fishing the Irwell below, I thought they won’t catch anything there, when one of them hooked a bloody great Pike and landed it. Was great to see fish returning to the Irwell I did have footage of that but it’s long since gone. So many happy memories of walking a Jack Russell terrier in that area on a daily basis. Next time you are down there call in to the Horse Shoe Pub in Ringley great food, and a good pint the old canal runs around the perimeter of the car park at the side.
