I was happy to attend Oktoberfest in Munich back in 2019. It is odd that the Marzen style is not served at all at the festival. The Weisn/Festbier style is what is served and has been since I think the early '70s or so. All of the 'big six' Munich breweries do produce Marzens as well, but you have to buy them at package stores instead of at the festival or get them at the beer hall/restaurants outside of Oktoberfest. My personal favorite Oktoberfest is the Augustiner Marzen style, but you can't get that here in the USA (at least not that I've ever been able to find). My favorite one I can easily get is probably Hacker-Pschorr or Weihenstephaner, but those are both the Festbier style.
Alessandro tried the Weihenstephaner festbier on the channel once and loved it. I asked him to keep a bottle or two of it this year for me if he spots them in stores so I can try it next time I’m down in Florida.
It's always a sign the seasons are changing when Sam Adams octoberfest hits the shelves. Love that beer. I think you might be right about the recipe changing and it being more bitter now than it was years ago. Will have to get a 6-pack soon to test.
Nice review, gentleman! Sam Adams is still my favorite American made Marzen. Its definitely on the sweeter side, which is a plus for me. And to the best of my knowledge, they havent touched the recipe, although i've only had it the past 5 or 6 years. They've tinkered with Boston Lager, Winter Lager, Summer Ale, and Cold Snap over the years. Some benificial, some not so much. Due to its popularity, I think people would riot if this we're to be changed. Cheers!
Thanks for watching Nathan! Thanks for confirming that nothing was done to the Oktoberfest that they’ve announced at least. Sometimes with seasonals especially tweaks are made to the recipe over the years without any accompanying announcement. It had been so long since I tried it, so who knows. Could very well be remembering it wrong and it’s exactly the same as it always was. We have definitely seen a trend with this brewery though to move more towards hop flavours so I wouldn’t be surprised.
Google says that Sam Adams only reformulated their Boston Lager, and their Winter Lager. My family took a vacation to New England in July 2023 and I tried the Boston Lager while in Boston because it felt obligatory. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it! I've had it before and found it somewhat harsh. I apparently go the reformulated version and it was wonderful. It had a rich, smooth full-bodied flavor. Its now my go to beer I enjoy on a regular basis. Now I need to try the Octoberfest, looking forward to it. I enjoy your show a lot, but I find it really makes me thirsty.... Cheers!
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words Chris! Good to know about the Octoberfest recipe, thanks for looking into that. It's very possible they may have just gradually tweaked the recipe from year to year without officially announcing it. Especially with seasonals, that tends to happen sometimes. Alessandro really enjoyed it though regardless. I really liked the new boston lager too! Very easy drinking, crisp but flavorful beer.
Ok! So we have one more vote that the recipe has changed. This is getting interesting. A lot of people are saying it hasn’t, but I’m convinced all their beers have changed to be more hop-focused

You’ll have to conduct some important beer research and find out the answer for yourself. Let us know what your findings are.

Lasting Brass out of Oakville Connecticut has a festbier called Fuchs that was excellent, maybe my favorite beer of all time
Fuchs is an excellent name for a beer . That’s a strong endorsement, would love to try it one day.
I feel your pain
I live in Ottawa and other then a few, hard to find variety in Octoberfest beers.
We’re so deprived of good imports in Canada compared to the U.S. it’s criminal
Out of what I've tried Paulaner weissbier is my fav
We gave it a perfect score, so safe to say we agree
The Sam adams was abit malty years ago.
It was, right?? Such a shame that they changed the recipes of their beers to focus more on hops.
@ sure is ! Love the reviews bros! Earned a new subscriber!
@ Welcome to the channel and thanks so much for watching! Cheers
Sam Adams Oktoberfest too bitter now. Looking for a new brewer.
