My favorite (here stateside) is the Spaten Oktoberfest. In Germany, it was the Hofbrau brand Oktoberfest. Now you have me in the mood to go get some on the way home from work. I am more than likely going to brew one up during my next brewday. Cheers, Ryan! \m/
My gateway drug was Gordon Biersch. I had never had a Marzen and it was immediately my favorite beer. It's been years since I had one, and I don't think I can get them in San Diego anymore, but it introduced me to my hands-down favorite style of beer. I just got the Karl Struss version fron Costco, and it's really great. That's what I can say about Marzens. They're all really great. I don't think I've ever had a bad one.
Do not underestimate the great taste of hacker-pshorr Oktoberfest. I keep it on my kegerator year round. But to me beers of this style should be tried from a tap.
My first lager ever brewed was a Marzen just brewed it in South Fl starting in August and the taste is really nice pre carbonation. We are letting sit through the month of September for a total of 4 weeks fermentation and 4 weeks conditioning and I think it will be really nice.
Love spaten anything also I'm actually drinking a Pauline october fest marten right now as I'm commenting....most everything I've tried from Munich has been delicious..
Favorite Oktoberfest Bier in the States is from Old Mecklenburg Brewing Company in Charlotte. Pretty sure they use a Franconian strain of yeast. Delicious.
Check out Real Craft Ales, where a Welsh guy reviews all sorts of beer in his kitchen. He's pretty good, though recently has started reviewing food from time to time. I don't think it's to pair the two, as people don't generally drink beer with biscuits/cookies.
Thanks for the video. I’m in Texas and I’m partial to Shiner Oktoberfest. Having said that I always try a variety and I’m drink Hofbrau right now. Prost😁
I found this on Wikipedia "The earliest chemically confirmed barley beer to date was discovered at Godin Tepe in the central Zagros Mountains of Iran, where fragments of a jug, from between 5400 and 5000 years ago was found to be coated with beerstone, a by-product of the brewing process."
Droppin' knowledge, as always. I definitely need to grab some Oktoberfest brews for reviewing purposes in the next few weeks. Great video, brother. Cheers!
Lots of good comments here, but everyone left out one of the great German breweries...Ayinger makes a great Fest-Marzen, as they have it labeled...I'm an admitted O'fest snob and highly recommend it!
i threw up at Oktoberfest after drinking 5 and a half liters and what seemed like hundreds of Germans in traditional garb laughed at me while saying Amerikaner. It was great, lol.
You do realize that Märzens are not really served at Oktoberfest. The vast majority of beer at Oktoberfest are Fest beers. They are a different style from Märzens. Fest beers are lighter in color and not as strong. That way guests at the festivals are able to consume more and not get as drunk so quickly.
"festbier" is such a new term in the beer world, there's not a lot of info out there on it! And in the USA our "Oktoberfest" styles are mostly based on the marzen style. I posted a video on it last year if you want a little more info on the distinction :) th-cam.com/video/40zD7KRhnA0/w-d-xo.html
At Oktoberfest I believe Hacker-Pschorr still serve the Märzen style, the rest 5 brands all serve Festbier. My favorite would be Augustiner. Living in Bayern for the 3 years, the Hofbräu is not really a common choice by the local from what I have seen.
completely wrong. Oktoberfest beer is NOT the same as Märzen. Out of the six breweries that are allowed to make Oktoberfest beer for the festival, only the beer from Hacker Pschorr has anything to do with with a Märzen beer. The other Octoberfest beer from other 5 breweries is like a strong export beer. No sweet malt taste.
No, not at all. I was focusing on a particular style of beer in this video, the Marzen, but beer as a beverage is much much older. 9000 years isn't out of the realm of possibility. Perhaps I should do a video on ancient beer. Cheers!
Why do you pronounce st as sht, like saying shtyle instead of style? Is that a regional pronunciation? I have lived in America for over a decade having never heard that in person-to-person real life conversation.
You're drinking old, skunked Oktoberfest, then. I wouldn't touch any of the German ones we get here, because they've invariably suffered the same fate.
Next to hazy IPAs, this is easily my favorite style of beer
Just picked up a 4-pack of Big Storm Brewery(Odessa, FL) OctoberFest “Marzen Lager”. Details to follow after tasting.

Glad to hear you'll be brewing one soon. Looking forward to it. Cheers!
The first clear beer or pale lagar was brewed in 1842 in Plzen, Czech, by Joesef Grol. Pilsner
Mmmm.. Pilsner Urquell

great german made marzen but weltenberger is good imo too.
one of my favorites of the style made stateside is Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest, which they have been doing as a collab the past few years.
I agree, I've had the last 3 year's and they are stellar!
This is my FAVORITE time of year for beer too! Thanks for the awesome lesson, Ryan!
Very exciting stuff. Cheers!
I love a good Marzen! One of my favorite styles.
Cheers! They're rolling into the bottle shops :)
Don't discount Samuel Adams Oktoberfest. It's super tasty.
Love the pic in the intro of the Circleville (OH) Pumpkin Show's pumpkin tower 😂. Im like, wait a sec, thats my hometown lol

Great video. Looking forward to Yuengling Oktoberfest myself. Cheers
I just bought a six pack of the Samuel Adams Oktoberfest beer today! It is absolutely delicious! 👍🏻😉👍🏻

Thanks man , best channel for beer info , on the net . Prost
Thanks so much man. Cheers!

Sorry: Real Ale Craft Beer.
Thanks for the video. I’m in Texas and I’m partial to Shiner Oktoberfest. Having said that I always try a variety and I’m drink Hofbrau right now. Prost😁
This video triggered my yearly excited realization of "Oh right! Fall is coming! And that means Märzens!"
Too right. I get so excited as well. Cheers!

Me too haha. Cheers!
Come back Ryan. we miss you.

Great Dopplebock also!
Loving this vid!! Funny thing, i’ve been editing my own oktoberfest vid 😂🤣. I like your subtle plug for Beer Rev. cheers🍻🍻
I drink stouts in the winter. the warmer, the lighter the beer in summer.
Hochzeit bier is a great one from Austria.
Sierra Nevada I think makes the best US Oktoberfest beer (at least the best in terms of beers that are widely available)
I´m in Germany at least once every year and sipping some Vienna and Märzen. Cheers
Glad to hear it! Cheers!
What is your favorite beer to drink this time of year?
Still driven towards Saisons for now, but I'm slowly starting to look for Oktoberfest style of beers!
Looking forward to marzens, Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers (pumpkin not pumpkin spice).
I should finish up the summer with Saisons and session ales
Marzen. Lots of good craft ones but my favorite widely available one is Sam Adams
Look forward to Sam Adams Octoberfest all year. Most stores run out by Halloween.
Yeungling October Fest - Märzen style!
Hey what happened to the pop-filter? Also try lowcut (highpass). Another good one!
I'll give the highpass a shot. Cheers!
I brew a traditional darker Märtzen. Whith alot of munich malt.
Bob’s 47 by Boulevard is a nice American Marzen.
Awesome video! Cheers! Check out Genesee Oktoberfest, super cheap but very good!
Glad you liked it and thanks for the recommendation! Cheers!
HB 😍

You should edit your video so it's not wrong.

You’re like the Rick Steves of beer I love it.
What a high complement! Cheers!
“Be sure to seek these ones out” 🤦🏼♂️
Some good info cause you no i love this beer.........................................CHEERS

I heard beer has been around for almost 9000 years? Was that a lie?

That would be great, but don't make it too short... I would like the longest video you can fill, :)
This did not age well

Ah, yeah....Sam Adams Octoberfest is not a solid choice, unless you like dirty wet cardboard.
ReigningOnYourParade
Which ones would you recommend?
German ones...CHeeeeRS
I disagree, I think Sam Adams actually makes a very good Octoberfest, although I am not big fan of their other beers.
You're drinking old, skunked Oktoberfest, then. I wouldn't touch any of the German ones we get here, because they've invariably suffered the same fate.
Paulaner octoberfest marzen
Unfortunately you don’t know which October it’s actually for, they sit on the shelves so kind here..
