So basically: 1. Drain the transmission fluid when it's cold 2. Refill new transmission fluid until it starts dripping out the hole 3. Start the engine and rev it quickly to remove any air from the transmission 4. At idle speed, run it through all the gears, 3 seconds each 5. Let the transmission fluid reach temperature between 35-40 degree celsius 6. Top off the transmission fluid until it drips out the hole again Am I missing anything?
That's basically it - make sure you pump enough new oil into the system - it's not just a case of replacing the amount that came out. Always refer to the official manuals for the exact procedure/amounts - I'm only providing these videos for entertainment purposes - I'm definitely not a professional mechanic - I take no responsibilities! I'm basically a bit reluctant to do this on my Audi...
I’ve changed 3 Audi boxes over the years - all were regularly serviced throughout the cars’ lives. I have also heard that certain boxes are prone to failure - with VW/Audi it’s a bit of a gamble - sometimes it’s the engines, sometimes the gearboxes, sometimes the electronics. I’ve only heard of one gearbox failure (in my “circle”) and that was due to never ever being serviced. Good luck!👍
@@Eric36h , Erik, the transmissions that could be damaged by a fresh oil change are NOT the CVT. The others fail because the new high detergent fluid washes the accumulated particles out of the clutches, but, the CVT has no clutches it has a steel belt instead. (And the steel belt needs the clean new fluid.)
Looking to perform this myself and watch lots of videos and the workshop manual, and what I come to conclusion is on final check oil should just slowly stop poring trough the fill hole reaching the 40° and that should be the right quantity and oil level is righ ?!
The 09G is not a bad box - the solenoids are known to stick with age but can be replaced easily. There are kits available. Regular fluid changes and flushes can help keep the box changing smoothly. We had an old A3 with the 09G and after 3 flushes it was as good as new!
In other automatic gearbox like a tiptronic, there wil always be old oil left in the converter. I have always change the oil 3-4 times in those cases and runed the car throu all gear betwin each oil shift while the car is up on the lift. Is this also necessary to multitronic to change all the oil?
Yes indeed. The A4B8 1.8 multitronic transmission has only one drain and fill point. There is a standpipe that need to be remove for full drainage of ATF.

Good evening, congratulations on the video. My Audi is the A4 1.8 T gasoline model year 2005, automatic transmission (CVT). Is this car you are exchanging the same model as mine? If it's not the same as my car, can you recommend a video that teaches how to change the oil. Thank you in advance, thank you very much.
Thanks for watching. While the procedure would normally be the same for most VW/Audi CVT gearboxes, please check the manufacturer specifications, especially regarding the correct oil. Things change over the years and it's always important to check the exact specifications and techniques for your own vehicle. If you're doing it yourself and have any questions, always ask a professional - I'm just an amateur working on my own private vehicles!

Hi, Really appreciated your job in this video. I am having 2013 a4 1.8t cvt. I am only having one plug in the transmission. I can’t find another as your video shows. Can you please help me. Thanks
It all depends on the amount of oil that was drained from the transmission. In MY case, it was around 5.5 L, others often need more - Audi themselves charge for 7.5. The level always has to be checked at the right temperature. That is the most important part of an oil change on these gearboxes!
Isn't the safest procedure after refilling to 1. let it drain to correct level 2. run engine a short time, and go through gear selections, turn off . 3. check and ensure fluid is still at correct level.4. warm up the transmission 5. drain it back to correct level when at correct temperature.
Hello sir thank you very much for this video, it's definitely looks doable even with a small handpump. Now before I jump into buying cvt atf, would you recommend the brand you had on this video "Meyle"? How was the car running after the oil change, nothing to report ? Thanks in advance
Well done, if you had a coupler after your shut off valve and hose it wouldn't be such a mess. Thumbs up. Very clear and crisp English by the way, you are a native from England? Greetings from Germany
Hey, I have a 3.2 audi tt. Wanted to oil drain the auto dsg by myself. But after watching this clip, I guess i'll only do the engine and the haldex. Don't even know were to get the M24 XZN tool.
It is not any worse than changing any other sealed transmission fluid. Just get the correct fluid and don't be cheap about that then you should be fine. The DSG MUST be done every 40,000 miles or sooner. There is a filter up top under the battery tray. There are some vids on doing this too.
Yep - Charles is right - it can be done by yourself quite easily - just follow the instructions and buy good quality oil. Liqui Moly is very good and can always be recommended if it's available in your area. Just make sure it's the right specification for your gearbox.
@@dukeofhuzza I have a 09G but I have also considered using Liqui Moly ATF in that too. That would be Top Tec 1800 for 2nd gen 09G. Top Tech 1200 for 1st gen.
I have two questions: 1) Cant we fill atf from where the filter with a funnel instead of trying to pump it up from lower tap? 2) If we replace atf when the transmission is cold we wouldnt need level check , would we?
This kind of gearbox does not allow for "normal" filling. The fluid has to be pumped back in through the sump plug as shown. Also, in order to get the correct level, the procedure must be followed, including reaching the correct temperature, when the final level is adjusted (with the engine running)! It's complicated, but it's the only way!
I'm a bit puzzled. Audi specify that you change the gearbox oil filter with every oil change. If that's the case, surely it must be something you can't do yourself... or what? But maybe it isn't necessary after all? Also, is it a very special program you use on the computer, or does VCDS have a function to view oil temp?
The problem with Multitronic gearboxes is you can’t get to the filter without removing and disassembling the gearbox. Other gearboxes require regular filter changes - the filter is located just inside the sump pan. Yes - VCDS does read gearbox oil temperature!

Thanks! One question, maybe you got a clue? :). I need to take off the ATF Cooler for changing the belts, so I might loose some CVT-oil then. Do you think it's possible to get the lost oil back into the system when reinstalling the cooler tubes over the upper hose hole in the cooler?
That's above my skills I'm afraid! If you can get the oil back in and it's 100% clean, then good luck to you! It would probably be safer to change the oil and do a flush at the same time.

Hi Fraser. Very useful video, thanks. I need to replace the fluid on mine as I've just removed the ECU ready to be sent off for repair. There seem to be different colour CVT fluids available and the old fluid that came out is a dirty brown colour so I'm not too sure of the original colour. I don't think you can mix different colour fluids, any advice?
If the fluid was very old, it's advisable to perform a series of changes back to back to flush as much of the old oil out of the system - or even better - have a professional flush performed.
@@dukeofhuzza Thanks. I've replaced the fluid that came out with Ravenol CVT. I could only get around 4.75 litres back in and I think just over 5 litres drained out! I'm going to refill again in a few days as I've had to get the TCU repaired again. I'm wondering if there may have been air in the gearbox? Regards...
Nope - the filter is buried deep within the CVT transmission and requires serious dismantling of the gearbox itself. This generation of CVT doesn't have any "speeds" as such anyway. Do you maybe mean the 7-speed DSG? That definitely has a filter that can easily be changed when doing a fluid change.
@@dukeofhuzza Yeah, this method takes time, but in my case I had plenty time(during the lockdown). And also to avoid mess,Ive filled oil through the breather tube @ the TOP of 01J(need remove cap first) as experiment .And this method did a great job. GREAT VIDEO ANYWAY! Greetings from Highlands 🏴
Hi great video!!! Im looking to buy a 2008 a6 sline auto with 92.000 miles on it, it had 4 owners, from what i hear the gearbox oil needs changing every 40.000 or so, is there a way to check or just change it to be on the safe side. Keep the vids coming
Hi When you first remove the plug for the fill and level drain, a lot of fluid came out and you said this was great, or correct. So, if the engine was cold, and the fluid not expanded, shouldn't no fluid come out when the engine is cold?
Reason for this happening is because the fluid is sitting at the bottom of the transmission and pan. Level should be above the drain tube. Once the transmission starts and circulates the fluid trough the gears and rest of the transmission, the level should be slightly below the fill tube. The reason you need the proper temperature of the fluid is due to the termal properties of the fluid. You want to have just the right amount of fluid in there until it starts running out trough the plug. Remember yiu always check transmission fluid on vehicles with the car running always for this reason.
Thank you for the clear video, although one thing I don't get. When draining the oil from the filling hole, more oile came out then when you checked the oil level after finishing the oilchange. Does this means there was to much oil inside gearbox? I thought checking the oil level should be done with the engine running? (2002 c5 01J)
He set the oil level wrong, he supposed to have the car running between 95-113 f degrees then set the level, that transmission needs at least 1.5 quarts more
@@satt4603 He did it right , on right temperature but in Celsius degree between 35-45 And if you convert it into Fahrenheit degrees pretty much the same as 95-113 F
@@satt4603 wow thats a lot of volume difference you estimate. You got that wrong, its only going to be up to a pint different due to wrong temperature. However you got it wrong. If you had it colder than operating temperature, it will have TOO MUCH FLUID when at operating temperature. Where did you get your internet posting license ? you need to resit that test !.
You can try the gravity method - hold the bottle up high, let the oil "fall" in. It still requires the correct plug and will make more mess. The pump I have isn't expensive and makes life a LOT easier! Just make sure you're using the correct procedure for your exact gearbox - they're all a bit different!
While the procedure is basically the same, it’s always advisable to check service manuals etc for the exact type of oil required and change procedure. Do you even have the Multitronic box? Later cars could also have the tiptronic... different kettle of fish!
As the multitronic doesn't have gears as such, that's not relevant here. But don't take my word on it! Regular automatic boxes DO require that all gears are selected after a change.
Hi Mr Gartshore, is this process OK for a Q5 2010 2.0 TDI 7 gear. How long did you leave it running to get to the optimum temperature as I don't have the software you have.
Nope - you’ve got a very different setup there! You have the DSG by the sounds of it - don’t quote me on that though. Check service manuals for the 3-letter gearbox code and then check that online for required oil/amounts/procedures!
Multi-tronic is VW’s name for the CVT. The CVT uses an internal screen (like some Hondas) which is only accessible by dropping the unit and cracking it open. There is a filter inline on the cooler line, but not everyone bothers to change it. The official repair info only calls for a drain and refill.
Make sure you have the right tools, the correct oil and a way of measuring the temperature. A pump like I have makes it much easier. Read the instructions required for your gearbox online - they’re all slightly different! Good luck!
Gartshore's Garage How long approximately it take to reach the good température? I let my car run for 15 minutes and the temperature stay way below the required température..
Hello Mr, could you please tell me if the multitronic a4 shaking when I want to start driving sometimes is it related to the gear box oil change ? Thank you
I have an a6 and I used to feel the clicks & Thurdd noises when the gear drops from high to low.. after changing the transmission oil the noise is gone.. my car runs runs great.
Parts stores/online parts resellers/etc. If in doubt check online car forums - there’s always someone there who knows exactly what your car/make/model/year/specification requires!
In fact, CVT fluids are different for the different type of CVT's.. You need CHAIN CVT fluid in an audi with a CHAIN CVT !. Other brands have rubber belt CVT of various sorts... of which I dont know, but CVT chain for AUDI chain CVT's !
@@dukeofhuzza When you did the final level check the engine wasn't running. Should it be running? or do I just need to make sure the gearbox is at the correct temperature with the engine off?
It all depends on how much you pumped in on refilling. Here’s an excerpt from the official blurb: Run the engine in P and monitor the temperature When the ATF has reached a temperature of 35°C, unscrew ATF inspection plug -B-. When the plug is opened, approx. 5 cl of ATF will always run out of the inner oil level tube If ATF continues to come out through ATF inspection opening via overflow pipe before ATF has reached a temperature of 40 °C, the ATF level is OK. ATF inspection plug must be screwed in again at the latest when ATF reaches temperature of 45 °C (countries with hot climates: 50 °C). If ATF temperature exceeds 45 °C too much fluid will escape as it expands when heated. In this case the quantity of fluid in the gearbox is NOT sufficient! If no ATF fluid has drained out of the inspection plug when temperature reaches 40 °C, top up ATF
I have an audi a3 8p 2004 1.6 with a CVT Gearbox and is very jumpy between the gears.. to be Honest I don t think the oil has ever been changed but I know that the problem might be much worse ( filter or any other internal component) my question is, do you think that changing just the oil, might get the car to not get those shock waves when is shifting gears? And if so, does the process described in this video, applies to my car? Thank you!
Are you sure you have a cvt? I don’t recall any A3 8Ps having them. They usually had the Aisin gearbox which was prone to sticking solenoids. The process is pretty much the same - you only have one plug and the filter needs to be changed which means removing the oil pan - check online for more details and the correct oil and procedures. An oil change might help a lot, a flush would be better. (Or 2-3 oil changes with short drives in between!).
It seems based on the number of Multi CVT failures on the Audi A6 B6 you're suspicions on Long Life oil aren't entirely unfounded (esp as Audi themselves suggest the 60km oil change). However interesting thing is, when i've spoken to two Audi dealers about how much oil is required to refill both Audi dealers replied with 7.5 litres. Interesting that you suggest only 5.5l is required (does make a cost difference)
Check the specs for your exact gearbox and try your local parts store - if it’s too specialised for them - Amazon or eBay will have it! Buy good quality tools, they cost more but last for ever!

However, one thing I'm concerned about is that I've heard many horror stories about automatic transmissions get ruined after changing the fluid (if it's never been changed before), have you heard of that? I'm basically a bit reluctant to do this on my Audi...
I’ve changed 3 Audi boxes over the years - all were regularly serviced throughout the cars’ lives. I have also heard that certain boxes are prone to failure - with VW/Audi it’s a bit of a gamble - sometimes it’s the engines, sometimes the gearboxes, sometimes the electronics. I’ve only heard of one gearbox failure (in my “circle”) and that was due to never ever being serviced. Good luck!👍
@@dukeofhuzza Danke!
@@Eric36h , Erik, the transmissions that could be damaged by a fresh oil change are NOT the CVT. The others fail because the new high detergent fluid washes the accumulated particles out of the clutches, but, the CVT has no clutches it has a steel belt instead. Looking to perform this myself and watch lots of videos and the workshop manual, and what I come to conclusion is on final check oil should just slowly stop poring trough the fill hole reaching the 40° and that should be the right quantity and oil level is righ ?!

Even the automatic is filled from under. I have a Passat with a 09G and while not a CVT it is similar to other "sealed" transmissions.

Sounds like you need to take some legal action against your local garage.
What oil did you (or previous owner) use before ? Oem fabric oil to cvt gearbox ? What mileage made on used gearbox oil on movie ? It looks really good
The old oil did look to be in good condition, so I assume it was changed at prescribed intervals throughout the car’s life.
Fairly thorough.
What car are you working on?....Audi...? Looking to do a 2011 2.7 V6.
What is the trans' capacity?
Does doing what you did get all the 'old' ATF out?... With a Merecedes (e.g.) you have to drain the torque converter as well as the sump as the sump only holds about 3.5L whereas full g.box capacity is 8L. I have seen people with their demo's on TH-cam doing MB auto' trans' putting 3L of new ATF into 5L of remaining dirty ATF after just draing g.box sump.

Really appreciated your job in this video.

I am only having one plug in the transmission.
I can’t find another as your video shows.
Can you please help me.
Thanks
I've checked, and all CVTs seem to have 2 plugs - one to drain and one to fill... Strange!
Thanks for getting back to me with my query.
I have recheck for plugs but there is only one plug on my cvt.
I can’t attach pictures for my transmission here.
Hey, I have a question. This type of transmision does have a filter that needs to be changed everytime we change the oil ?
There is a filter buried deep inside the transmission. You can change it if the transmission is being rebuilt.
Oh.. I understand. So in the transmission you can fit like 5.5 liters of oil ?
It all depends on the amount of oil that was drained from the transmission. In MY case, it was around 5.5 L, others often need more - Audi themselves charge for 7.5. The level always has to be checked at the right temperature. That is the most important part of an oil change on these gearboxes!
Thank you very much. Your video was really helpful
Hello sir What kind of fluid your are using and is that fluid good quality ?
Hi I got question after refill whats procedure should I follow before test drive I got A4 b8 CDH engine 1.8Tfsi

Is that oil gear box change I can do it for an Audi A4 B8 TFSI 2010 ?
Hi Fraser, the car has a milage of 250 tkm. How you organiz your car aquise? Could be a topic for a video series... Greetings.

XzN Is M16? Right?
Hi Fraser, just an idea for a future show: do you listen to your cars? What do you listen for?
I have two questions: 1) Cant we fill atf from where the filter with a funnel instead of trying to pump it up from lower tap? 2) If we replace atf when the transmission is cold we wouldnt need level check , would we?
This kind of gearbox does not allow for "normal" filling. The fluid has to be pumped back in through the sump plug as shown. Also, in order to get the correct level, the procedure must be followed, including reaching the correct temperature, when the final level is adjusted (with the engine running)! It's complicated, but it's the only way!
How u do the audi use different oil in the diff
I'm a bit puzzled. Audi specify that you change the gearbox oil filter with every oil change.
If that's the case, surely it must be something you can't do yourself... or what?
But maybe it isn't necessary after all?
Also, is it a very special program you use on the computer, or does VCDS have a function to view oil temp?
The problem with Multitronic gearboxes is you can’t get to the filter without removing and disassembling the gearbox. Other gearboxes require regular filter changes - the filter is located just inside the sump pan.
Yes - VCDS does read gearbox oil temperature!
Multitronik have two Filters. One of the top gerbox. And one in to the gerbox.
@@cze2772 i have an A4 B8 from 2010, a pure beauty, but i have no reliable place to do it and i dont want to take a risk "if you want it done right, do it yourself"...

Tnx
I guess the fluid temperature must be correct AND the engine must be running while you topping it up. Otherwise it does not make sense..
Do you not need to replace the old oil pan gasket, oil filter, and magnets inside the transmission pan after replacing the fluid?
Multitronic transmission does not have oil pan.
Hi mate. Is it the same procedure for A6 2.7tdi 2006 with CVT 7 speed ? Thank you !
Yes, it is
Is that the ZF5HP19 trans? Or what years take the same size fill adapter?
Hi, Mr. Fraser! I love the content and the way you explain so easily. I just bought a Audi A4 Avant 2011 with Multitronic transmission and I'll looking forward for more contents about who to keep this car. By the way, which model is your car? Anyway, Happy New Year!😉👍

No filter change? This 7 speed CVT has no filter that you need to change when you change the oil ?
Nope - the filter is buried deep within the CVT transmission and requires serious dismantling of the gearbox itself. This generation of CVT doesn't have any "speeds" as such anyway. Do you maybe mean the 7-speed DSG? That definitely has a filter that can easily be changed when doing a fluid change.
Can I change oil without pump?

Hi
When you first remove the plug for the fill and level drain, a lot of fluid came out and you said this was great, or correct.

Was there not a oil filter to change in the gearbox like the S4?
Multi-tronic is VW’s name for the CVT. The CVT uses an internal screen (like some Hondas) which is only accessible by dropping the unit and cracking it open.
There is a filter inline on the cooler line, but not everyone bothers to change it. The official repair info only calls for a drain and refill.
You hitt upp gerbox before you start change oil?
The gearbox should be cold/cool to start the procedure. The heating is only required to get the right level of new oil.

Parts stores/online parts resellers/etc. If in doubt check online car forums - there’s always someone there who knows exactly what your car/make/model/year/specification requires!
Alright ill check that out! Thank you so much for the advice
In fact, CVT fluids are different for the different type of CVT's.. You need CHAIN CVT fluid in an audi with a CHAIN CVT !. Other brands have rubber belt CVT of various sorts... of which I dont know, but CVT chain for AUDI chain CVT's !
So how come you've got so much oil coming out of the fill plug when cold? Was it over filled?
The final level is achieved with the engine running, so there is always more fluid in there than when the engine is off...
@@dukeofhuzza When you did the final level check the engine wasn't running. Should it be running? or do I just need to make sure the gearbox is at the correct temperature with the engine off?
It all depends on how much you pumped in on refilling.
Here’s an excerpt from the official blurb:
Run the engine in P and monitor the temperature
When the ATF has reached a temperature of 35°C, unscrew ATF inspection plug -B-.
When the plug is opened, approx. 5 cl of ATF will always run out of the inner oil level tube
If ATF continues to come out through ATF inspection opening via overflow pipe before ATF has reached a temperature of 40 °C, the ATF level is OK.
I have an audi a3 8p 2004 1.6 with a CVT Gearbox and is very jumpy between the gears.. to be
Honest I don t think the oil has ever been changed but I know that the problem might be much worse ( filter or any other internal component) my question is, do you think that changing just the oil, might get the car to not get those shock waves when is shifting gears?
So where do I get that socket for an Audi A5 2010 trans drain plug
Check the specs for your exact gearbox and try your local parts store - if it’s too specialised for them - Amazon or eBay will have it! Buy good quality tools, they cost more but last for ever!
