Hi all! In today's video I'm giving you a tour of one of my first watercolor sketchbooks. This may be the 2nd or 3rd one I owned.
This one is really a mixed bag. Some terrible work. Some excellent work. But it really goes to show you how with practice and perseverance - You WILL improve.
I hope you find this sketchbook tour encouraging / interesting. And I will talk to you again really soon ^_^

This is very refreshing to see positivity with an artist looking through their own work. Sure, you point out some things that are wrong, but you enjoy your journey. I watched kelogsloops talk about his show and artwork, and he was excited about things that came out well. And Zekeslunchbox, very inspiring, and positive.
Artists are so hard on themselves usually. This recent wave of positive energy is so helpful for people like me that need to see light at the end of the tunnel.
Always love to see a fellow artist who don’t make perfect sketchbooks. Cheers!

I agree completely. Our sketch books and old paintings are invaluable for recording our progress (mistakes are good). They are the best teaching tools and sources of encouragement. The good, the bad and the ugly are all there to remind us of how far we're come. Thanks for showing us yours, Liron. They are so inspiring. :)
I loved the fact that, in the paintings which were not perfect, you still managed to highlight the good bits and this is very inspiring

Love this video, Liron. You show people how to critique your own work without beating yourself up :-) Also, you demonstrate how much further ahead you were when you started in watercolor because you have such a good base in drawing. So many watercolorists seem to think they can skip that step :-)

Liron, I'm so glad you did this... I remember every one of these that you did a video on.. All your color charts, your drawings, sketches, people... Back then I found your work to be a bit opaque and dark. But I knew you were on this journey, and it was just a short time that somehow it clicked for you.
I am amazed at the progress your work has taken...
I saw your videos at the time you were in Paris... in that tiny place, such fun. But I'm glad your where you are now.. Best of luck Liron, you deserve it.

Thanks for sharing the early sketchbook with us all, Liron. I like the way you used it to experiment with lots of different styles/techniques - from simple swatches to pencil drawings to fully finished pieces. I'm far too 'precious' with my own sketchbooks and am still reluctant to attempt anything but fully-formed pieces in my books - with the result that I use them far less than i should be doing (and, thus, I end up doing less painting than I should). I definitely should try to emulate your approach to sketchbooks far more - thanks for the encouragement. Best wishes, Brian.

Liron, thanks. Helps and encourages me to continue. Question. Is the paper in the sketchbook smooth hot press or cold press? Do you prefer one over the other?
Thanks Liron. I like the grass shack one in particular. I'm afraid I skimp on sketch books. I buy Strathmore because I never feel like I'm wasting a page.... also I do like to work on cellulose paper for pigment vibrancy... not a big deal as I tend to be a minimalist on strokes as well as a lifter. On another channel the creator talked about the recent decline in moleskin paper having used it for years to compare. I enjoyed seeing your past works.
You have amazingly fast progress. Today I am probably at your 2017 level. How many hours a day I should work to catch you up?
Hey Liron, I thought this was a great video, really shows your growth as an artist. I'm currently trying different sketchbooks out...I have the Moleskin , I agree and think they should go at 140lb with paper, I have a 3"*5" for Plein air studies. The moleskin is 25% cotton similar to fabrianos studio paper for students. I'm using right now the Pentalic sketchbook, so far I'm impressed. It's 100% cotton and 140lb weight, doesn't buckle so far it handling my abuse lol but I was curious about if you have a favourite sketchbook brand ect? I ordered a B6 travel journal and am probably going to cut down my hanamule and arches and basically build my own... so far those are the two brands I can get reasonably priced that are excellent. I tried Saunders but it's so expensive in Canada but gorgeous paper anyways cheers my friend! Great video!

Thank you for sharing one of your first sketchbooks! It was interesting to see your work then verses now and the exercises in the sketchbook. You mentioned in the video not liking the moleskin watercolor sketchbook as much. Is there a watercolor sketchbook that you prefer to use now?

I really love the Canson Montval sketchbook, but it's also not perfect, as it's pulp paper (but a little thicker than Moleskine).
Honestly the best option is to bind REAL watercolor paper yourself and make your own sketchbook (;
@@LironYan Thanks for the reply! I may just end up making my own sketchbook as I'm still learning and I find if I'm not using 100% cotton paper I tend to struggle more with it >.
I think if you draw the lines with marker on your watercolor paintings, something like comic-style, it would look great.

Hi Liron, Why is it that this paper is awful for me while blending? I am Italian, I want to love Moleskine because everyone else does, but the effect is awful. I know it must be me....but I follow all of Shari Blaukopf's tutorials and everything I do is still awful.I am not bad, I promise...but maybe you could do a tutorial of something while using Moleskine? Oh and something else other people have commented on: I love how you teach with your imperfections, embracing the mistakes and the jourmey along the way. Sometimes we get so caught up on reaching perfection we get stuck in limbo...whereas people love learning alongside a fellow sketcher/painter. PS: I am an urban sketcher so everything I do is on location.
