  • In 1919 a group of young men barely out of their teens, poorly armed, with no money and little training, renewed the fight, begun in 1916, to drive the British out of Ireland. Dan Breen was to become the best known of them. At first they were condemed on all sides. They became outlaws and My Fight for Irish Freedom describes graphically what life was like 'on the run,' with 'an army at one's heels and a thousand pounds on one's head'. A burning belief in their cause sustained them through many a dark and bitter day and slowly support came from the people.

    My grandfather was a Gun runner and dispatcher for Paddy Kinnane of Upperchurch. He robbed rifles one time from the now Garda College with was the British army Barracks at the time in Templemore. He was buried in Templemore in 1976 with the Tri Colour on his coffin. God rest them all brave men.

    Dan Breen's wanted poster described him thus.Age 27, 5 feet 7 inches in height, bronzed complexion,dark hair(long in front),grey eyes, short cocked nose,stout build,weight about 12 stone,clean shaven; sulky bulldog appearance; looks rather like a blacksmith coming home from work; wears cap pulled well down over face.

    Great song thanks for the posting Dan. Also really interesting photos - does anyone know who the third person in the photo at 0.08-0.13 with Sean Hogan and Dan Breen?

      Cudgie 1000 Possibly Dinny Lacey Or Dinny Slattery

    • @Cudgie
      @Cudgie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Myles Meagher Couldn't be Dinny Lacey as the photo was taken when Hogan and Breen went to America after the treaty was signed. It was probably taken around Jan 1922. They both returned to fight for the Republican side in the Civil War. But I am pretty sure Lacey never went to America. I am not sure who Dinny Slattery is.
