    It actually sounds great for GBA.

    Thank you for making these. I have thought about life a lot while listening to the GB, and now GBA versions of this song. I won't go into personal details here, but these versions of Live and Learn are helping me in ways you may never know or understand (not meant as an insult, just... there's too much depth to go into here), and I thank you very much for making them.

      I might understand where you're coming from, live and learn is such a beautiful song and it's been plenty of times when I've listened, really listened to the song and it's brought me to tears just thinking about everything going on. Life is hard and designed to try to keep us down but as the song says live and learn from all experiences and maybe we'll all be better for it.
      I hope everything is going good for you and continues to do so ❤
      Also for @notube4me this rendition is awesome, how did you hook up the GBA to the scarlet? And is this like a custom ROM file?

    • @CatThatIsHere
      @CatThatIsHere วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@DudeDoes yes, it's a custom rom. the downloa link is in the desc.

    • @notube4me

      @@DudeDoes You nailed it, it's good to live and learn together!
      To hook up the GBA to the Scarlet, first I used a 3.5mm headphones adapter for Game Boy Advance SP (that goes into the EXT2 port). I used an audio cable with 3.5mm jack on one end (goes into the GBA headphones adapter) and 6.35mm jack on the other end (goes into the Scarlet).
      As @CatThatIsHere wrote, the ROM is linked in the description. If you have a flash cart such as the EverDrive GBA Mini (also linked in the description), you can load the ROM onto it and play on the real thing.
      Also, the source code and song data used to build the ROM are available on GitHub (also linked in the description), so that it's possible to learn how it's made and/or build the ROM file yourself. When I make a new remix, I always start by duplicating the folder of an existing project and clear out the song data.

    ..I'm not sure if it's appropriate to make requests here, but now I wonder what an Outer Wilds song would sound like on a gameboy/advance (you should 100% play that game if you haven't first, by the way, it's amazing)

    Gotta say, I find the stretching SA2 kinda silly... I mean, it's probably lighter than actual video if it's done through code, but the GBA COULD handle movies, right?

    • @NuVanDibe
      @NuVanDibe 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, but it has no dedicated sound chip. The CPU has to programmatically generate the sound on its own. Splitting its attention between rendering sound and video would result in lower quality sound.

    • @TheKorenji
      @TheKorenji 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @NuVanDibe Ah, I suppose that makes sense, but wouldn't that make it less believable for a game in the system to play this music?

    • @RadikAlice
      @RadikAlice 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      GBA Video was indeed a thing, but even if they aren't just musicians. Wouldn't expect them to set up something like that just for this
      Absolutely possible, and I think there's even scripts to automate the process.

    • @notube4me
      @notube4me  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Right, I just wanted some graphical effect rather a static background image, and that silly stretching is what I came up with this time. For video, not sure how big of a resolution and frame rate could be achieved while doing real-time decompression (would 160x128 even be feasible?). Perhaps some simple run-length encoding (RLE) can be used. The music player is very light on CPU (uses about 15% of the CPU time per frame). For the per-pixel fire effect that I did in the two recent Beach Boys (Christmas) remix ROMs, I had to limit the effect to just a portion of the screen in order to achieve 60 FPS (even when running the performance-critical code from IWRAM).

    I'm actually into this version thanks to 1.25x speed. Love this damn remix, Sonic is eating good so far.

      1.1 sounds like the original

  • @Tinkatube
    @Tinkatube 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    Realistically, how hard would it be to whip up versions of these two mixes (GB and GBA) that loop? I run tabletop games and a slower, Megaman-like version of this track would be good backing music for certain moments.

    • @RadikAlice
      @RadikAlice 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don't know how to use VGM ripping software, but since they gave us a ROM I presume they also set loop points for when playing it on hardware.
      So that part is sorted, and speed could be edited after the fact once it's exported as a regular audio file I guess. Easier than editing the timing of all the notes
      Oh yeah, could do it for you no problem

  • @soundspark
    @soundspark 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    What's different with the GBA version? Sounds about the same, just with a GBA effect.

    • @notube4me
      @notube4me  วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      You're right, it's about the same. I did it mostly just to show how easy it is to target both GB, GBA and NES using the same song file. Also, on some days I prefer the instrumentation of the GBA version (it uses a few sawtooth waveforms that are "buzzier" than the GB version).

  • @TheOneFreakservo
    @TheOneFreakservo ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    What, is the GBA not capable of replicating the song's original tempo or something?

    not rly my cup of tea, doesnt sound as hard as the original. Still support it though
