I think the Yes version of this song is one of the most beautiful in modern music history. Steve is out front and shines, but every other member also adds complexity and nuance (except Alan White who is credited as the primary composer). Also the Yes harmonies are in peak angelic choir mode on this one. Timeless masterpiece.

There are many things that stand out about Steve Howe's brilliant guitar style, which is integral to his sheer musical ability to create melodies that are just bang on point with what is being conveyed. I have recently been listening to Close to Edge but with Steve's guitar contribution isolated so you can hear clearly everything he does on the studio version. I have to say it is eye opening and a very entertaining listen without the other band members drawing you focus away. It is out there on TH-cam. Please take time to listen to this, I would like to hear your comments.

I think the original from Going For The One is much better, though this one is excellent. I'm not into Annie Haslam's style, though it's top notch from a technical point of view and I can see why people love her singing. The original is just perfect, and nobody sings like Jon.

Steve Howe is so versatile, electric guitar, classical guitar and pedal steel guitar (so impressive when I was at a Yes concert in 1977) and other string instruments. Also on the song Innuendo by Queen he plays the flamenco guitar. And he knows the classics, like his rendition in 1998 of Walk don't Run (a hit by the Ventures in 1960).

I forgot to mention that Howe have a great live album where he plays solo guitar. It’s called « Not necessarily acoustic ». It’s really excellent!

I was touched by your admiration and sincere emotion about the beauty of this song. The original is one of the most beautiful song in Yes' repertoire. This version is particularly interesting since it is enhanced with the magnificent voice of Annie Haslam. If you're interested in this singer's work, she is a member of a symphonic progressive rock band called Renaissance. This is a unique band whose music is an amalgam of a strong rhythm section, piano melody line and rich orchestral arrangements. Their song Mother Russia is a good illustration of my point. Finally, to discover another vistuoso progressive rock guitarist who has excellent classical guitar skills, why not listen to Steve Hackett of Genesis. A Midsummer Night Dream is his most accomplished album in this musical style.

The original song was by the Prog Rock band Yes. Steve was the guitarist for that band.

Steve and Annie did a nice cover of this. I can't remember if you have reacted to Renaissance, but Annie is their vocalist

Thanks for doing these reactions I might recommend The Song from Steve's first solo album Beginnings Song Beginnings Classical guitar at its finest.

I recommend that you listen to the original version. I find it even more powerful, and the combination of acoustic and electric guitar is out of this world.
Howe also excels at jazz, country or ragtime guitar. He is one of the most versatile player I’ve heard.

Steve Howe has released about 20 solo albums. I only know three of them, but if I were a guitarist, I would probably know more.
I have problems with this song insofar as the original of YES (album "Going For The One") is so improbably good. With this cover version I can clearly feel what I'm missing (from the original), but I don't really notice what the cover gives me more instead. (I would have to listen to the song more often) What is definitely missing is the "Aurora Effect". When Aurora covers a song, it's HER SONG afterwards.

Very Nice, it is hard to cover YES. Let alone sing Jon's part. I had not heard this version til today. Thanks.

The whole "Tales From Yesterday" album is excellent. Magellan turns "Don't Kill The Whale" into a hard-but-proggy delight. Robert Berry does a wacky "Roundabout" where he boldly flips the famous riff around. Billy Sherwood's "Wondrous Stories" is great. Magna Carta's tribute albums are very dependable.
