Gates of Delirium from the Relayer album was my introduction to this man’s ability to annihilate solos. From that day, he was my top influence. Phenomenally creative instrumentalist. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world. Immense respect!!!
Howe's closing solo on Siberian Khatru showcases his supreme talent. He "shreds melodically". Two styles that don't normally fit together. Still my all-time favorite guitar solo. For the record: I'm seventy years old and have listened to rock/jazz/country/folk since the mid-sixties.
@@steveoglesby4120 Siberian Khatru is indeed awesome and one of my favorites. "Yours is no disgrace" has to be the best live virtuosic display throughout on Yessongs for me....followed by "Parallels" on "Going for the One" and then of course "Gates of delirium" throughout. Steve is the best.
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games agree 100% it's an amazing record from end to end. I bought it immediately when it came out and wore it out. Nobody plays like that.
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games you saw them tho and we have all this wonderful live music to listen to and some good performances...check out Head or Hed Gilboa TH-cam of Yes live ..some of it is excellent despite it being 50 years old video...my favorite is Yessongs for live performances...that's their prime imo. Love me some Yes... doesn't get any better. Progressive Heaven.
One of the most innovative and under-rated guitarists. That phrase is often used inaccurately, but not here. I've been playing guitar for 30 years and have learned many styles, but I have never seen chords used as outlines for melodies or other combinations. Some of the most complex handwork in rock and roll, and the guy's self-taught. Amazing
I don’t think Howe was underrated during that time period in the 70s. As he said, he had every top spot on melody maker and rolling stone for that matter. Guitar magazine had him number one guitar player five years in a row during the 70s.
@@jaime7621 yeah all that's true and still no one in the general public knew who he was and I believe that's what Frankincensed was alluding to. Roundabout was a hit but no one knew the guys in the band.
Hardly underrated! Yes were huge back in their day. I think over the years, I've come to realize that his reputation as a 'technically superior' player is somewhat misleading. I think his technical limitations were his strength, forcing him to come up with really awe-inspiring lines/riffs that transcended typical playing. There are scores of more technically complex players out there, but that's not what Steve Howe was about IMO. His transcendental playing is clearly a result of being in a band of unique guys trying to make unique music - something we should all be thankful for! Sadly, those technical limitations have caught up with him - he's tired and can't keep up with himself anymore.
And yet, he has a reputation of being quite disagreeable with some of his bandmates or former bandmates. Trevor Rabin, John Wetton (RIP), and Peter Banks (RIP) were witnesses of this. You can sense some of it when he talks about the 84 formation of Asia. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy and his guitar playing is unique, but reality suggests otherwise when frisking with other people.
A joy, privilege, and rare opportunity to have been at the right age, and the right time to thoroughly absorb these early masterpieces till Wakeman's departure.
Wow Steve has a charm and relaxedness here that reminds me of David Bowie. Also - this kind of interview was aired on MTV? Incredible. Great interview, great musician
How do I love the Howe? Love your guitar playing, love Yes, love the way you talk, love your brilliance, love the way you look and you would've made an awesome Elrond, head elf in Lord of the Rings!
Loved Yes as a kid, seem to have come back to them again in middle age. A great band each member a virtuoso. Steve Howe is one of the greatest guitarists, saw him at the Beacon theatre mid eighties with GTR and again with Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford and Howe. Recently saw Jon Anderson in a small town called Sugar Loaf in NY. Jon performed with the talented young Paul Green Rock Academy, he still sounds great.
Fascinating to hear Steve's take and thoughts on the other prog rock giants of the day. Two years later he would get together with his namesake from Genesis, Steve Hackett, and record as GTR.
Yes will be welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Congratulations it is well over do You have had a amazing career since this interview. Greetings from Atlantic City New Jersey U.S.A
The Dixie Dregs are some real diamonds in the rough! I was glad to hear Steve Howe mention them in this interview 'cause the Dixie Dregs are definitely worth checking out.

MissAstorDancer you are right. I hope things are better for you now! I hope john sullivan sees your apology. We have all fallen short of perfection. I hope we can each decide every day to find ways to cope with this life without taking out our pain on others. One thing I have learned, is that being grateful for something is the best medicine for suffering. I am not just saying that. Well, as I state on my "about" section of my "channel"..... "I'm just an aging Boomer, looking for answers and moments of joy!" And speaking of "mirrors", this interaction with you brought about a pivotal moment just now for me, when I realized (through one of those serendipitous utube discoveries) that the reason I responded so strongly to your response to john sullivan, had a lot to do with my own fears, and my own past experiences of being ridiculed for expressing honest emotions. So, perhaps I need to practice what I preach, and not let my own issues cause me to be even a LITTLE unkind to another person.......even in defense of someone. Hope that made sense. I've heard tumours (read somewhere) that the super trebly guitar sound on Relayer is due to one of the members being constantly on coke and apparently that makes you like treble much more. Now who could that be (Chris perhaps?)
the interviewer thought it would add flair to the video for her to stand 25 ft away from the mic in a concrete tunnel

Steve Howe really chilled out after he helped the Hobbits destroy the ring of power in Mt. Doom.
Steve Howe has influenced so many guitarists with his hybrid style. An all-rounder but unique.
