Spooner Oldham is one of the most talented musicians, as well as one of the nicest, down to earth people you will ever meet.

This song is a fine synthesis of country music and soul. It's little wonder it's been recorded by so many artists from so many different genres.

A true classic. Where are you going to hear the co-writer of the song and Spooner singing together. Priceless!!!

There are so many wonderful versions of this song. I suppose knowing he wrote the song colors my opinion, but there is a tender, understated quality to the way he sings this that I find quite endearing. I had no idea he was such a great performer until recently. So fine.

They are both great music making and recording magicians and they played a very significant role and contribution to the Muscle Shoals music/recording industry.

I wish there was an equivalent to Muscle Shoals or the Stax/Volt studios in Memphis today.Amazing things happened at those places every day that likely couldn't happen today. It was like the musicians and writers were sheltered there from what was happening outside.

Its stuff like this that brought people like the late, Great Eddie Rabbit to Sheffield. Yes he was country but he wanted to mix in some r&b and the Amazing song, suspicions was born!

Of all the recorded versions of this song,I like Percy Sledge's best.I was also kind of stunned to learn that this guy wrote probably the first girl power song that I ever heard,Aretha Franklin's Do Right Woman in the mid 60's.

Great version, but my vote still goes to Graham Parsons, the only one who keeps the emotion and pathos, yet somehow doesn't let it drag, not to mention the beautiful inventive work of the Flying B. Brothers in the background.

maybe he's not as good as Carr, but nevertheless a) he wrote the tune and b) his voice is gorgeous too - we should stop always comparing one with the other, always telling others that this or that version is the definite one - there are so many brilliant musicians offering differing versions, all we have to do is listen and enjoy!

  • @berga101

Don't call it a James Carr classic when the man in the video wrote the song! I prefer Dan Penn singing it, anyway.

Thanks for posting this, but please list correct info. In the intro, Penn says he co-wrote this with Chips Moman. He also wrote songs with the gentleman playing piano and singing harmony, Spooner Oldham, but this ain't one of 'em. :-)

If Elvis recorded one of your songs, Tom Parker insisted you give them 50% of your mechanical royalties. There were many tunes that Elvis wanted to record but didn't when the authors balked at this deal.

This is a fine song that has been covered countless times. It's so good that it would be hard to screw it up, though a few have. But I agree that Gram's and Ry Cooder/Terry Evan's are at the top.
