I am happy that I have this project. Two of the very best ever steel players. Emmons was always my personal favorite. I was blessed to see both men several times at steel shows and never was disappointed.
I sure do love this steel guitar concert! Always loved their playing. A Way to Survive is listening to great steel players showing their talents in such complicated yet what looks to be second nature to them! I fell in love with the steel guitar 64 years ago when I met my husband. He played for many years of our 52 years of marriage. We went to several steel guitar conventions where these stars played. Especially Scotty's ISGC in St. Louis!

1:33.00 (Blue Jade), one of my favorite 3 steel instrumentals...along with Lloyd Green's Midnight Silence and Sleeping Beauty. With Hal Rugg it is pure perfection.
What no one has acknowledged yet is how buddy threw his hands up in surrender after Hal played his world famous Cascade lick. You had better pull the licks out of the bag and execute with precision if your going to play side by side with BIG E
Just...wow. Lucky to have seen the Big E and Ruggsy play. Thanks for posting this! EVERY break Buddy takes is breathtaking...and the look on Hals Rugg's face confirms that!
Two of my favorite players in action.....Thank you for making this video available so we can still enjoy them in action. I was privileged to have seen both of them live through Scotty's ISGCA in St. Louis. MO. for several years!
The classiest musicians know when to rest their chops and let the other guy have his opening. What you don't play is just as important as what you DO play
No offense to Bruce, but i like the emmons tone just a little more than the Zum, but just my personal opinion. Two monster jazz musicians. R.I.P.BUDDY N HAL.
That Emmons steel was one of a kind for sure. Loved that guitar and so sorry that when Ron Lashley, Sr. passed, the guitar went with him. No more Emmons.
Agree, always said the Emmons dynamics mid neck..just about the best there is, although a lot of player have favored the Zum, I do have one also in mind ..THE HOLY GRAIL…Mullen 1971…
I have this DVD and I always thought it was a great pity the camera operators didn't show more of the pedal and knee lever work. Seems to me that maybe they weren't players themselves.
@@imacomputerbuddie Lovely melody, when I was learning it I struggled with the harmonics. As you say the subtle things Buddy did is difficult to copy, to make the moves flow like he did is a hard task , if not impossible. Even though Hal is a great player You can see him working hard all the time, but Buddy just flows in a relaxed manner. What a legendary tasteful musician he was.
Wow...thanks for posting...there are so many great Steel players but Buddy is the reason I play today.. what is the name of that last song? It showcases technique that takes years to perfect...
Why can’t an Indonesian company mass produce several types of modern pedal steel guitars? So few manufacturers, and the waiting lists are about a year.
Could be a Standel, I think he mentioned it was the closest he could get to what he wanted. Would have been something to experience if he had found anything better!
22:52 you can kind of see the amps, looks like he's playing through a pair of Nashville 1000's. I can't confirm 100%, but I did see additional pics on another website that showed the amps, and they were as I said.
I hope someday I can capture the smooth sweet tone that comes from the heart of Buddy Emmons in my own playing.
Hello, how are you doing today,I hope you’re having a beautiful day?
I think I've watched this at least 378 times and I'll never get tired of it!

Wonderful anecdote. Best to y'all - keep on bein' true to that steelin' feelin'!
So glad Buddy was into jazz riffs. Otherwise we would have never had the iconic sound of Night Life.

I was lucky enough to witness this awesome collaboration and I'm still not over it. The best of the best and my heroes.
I was there that wonderful historical night and I'll never forget it.magical!
Two of the best who ever played steel, Hal & Big E admiring each others great licks, miss those great guys.
Buddy owns the Benchmark on Pedal steel, and he always will .
Don’t agree Ralph Mooney for me.
Guys like that should live to be 125! God can listen just like we do but he wants a front-row seat😇
That was awesome watching two of the great trading licks, they were on fire.

Your right about jazz it does get tuneless.
I play Robert Burns tunes
The best pedal steel players silently sing what they're playing......pedal steel voice, pedal soul and spirit.
This here is forever astonishing absolute Steel guitar joy. The camera work is excellent as well. Thanks to everyone involved!
Here's your pedal steel lesson for today folks. Hope you paid attention...masters at work here. RIP Hal and Buddy
Hello, how are you doing today,I hope you’re having a beautiful day?
Musician mastery doubly personified here... what an incredible evening that must have been!
Hello, how are you doing today,I hope you’re having a beautiful day?
As a steel player, I can't decide if I'm inspired or discouraged. Humility will save the day (hopefully).
What a night this must have been with 2 of the very best.
Wow wow wow
This is absolutely the best live performance for both of these legends!! Thanks for posting. I watch it a lot!!

And if you look, another steel guitar giant walked out at 57:52 and took a seat in the front row, Mr. John Hughey.
one of our very best efforts during the time I was president of the NTSGA

The pinnacle! Amazing this was captured.
Wow this is special!
Whatever it was to see this I would've paid triple.💯
These guys could have done some show stopping at the jazz festivals. Imagine a collaboration with Big E, Rugg, and a Wes Montgomery.
Big E on the Rolls Royce of steel guitars!

Big E, 1:37:31 down scales the famous “blue Jade”…slide. DAMM NAILED IT
Great band, too!
Bobby Bowman at the very beginning walkin around how I miss him
Buddy looks a bit under the weather but he is playing fabulously, Hal is great as well!
Great..
I heard it was like 100 °'s in there that night!
The A.C. unit went out early in the day and was not repaired. It was well over 100 the entire evening and every one was sweating their brains out.

11:05 is a Gem of a lick and Buddy has to give a look of approval at the end.
Whats the name of that song?
That quick glance Hal shot Buddy at the end of that lick was too much!!!🤣
Doctor Buddy and Prof. Hal..too much
Hello, how are you doing today,I hope you’re having a beautiful day?
Buddy’s always smiling for the camera!!! 😅👍🏻
If this was an LP or a CD it would be on my island list with kinda of blue, Beethovens 9th, bachs Chaconne, and Gattons RDJE

39:27 - Watch What Happens
1:17:00 - Freddie Freeloader

I think Ruggsy is running on wheatie power
And also put on your Superman cape.
