    Question - Did you wait until the pots were completely dry before you cleaned up the the edges of the cuts and what did you use?

    • @Cate7451
      @Cate7451 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I make these. Cleaning at sooner is better as it is easier. Clean a bit more at cheese hard stage. This is a matter of practice. Too much pressure will collapse the item. I guess you could use a Dremel too but I haven’t. Try even making luminaries with less holes or smaller ones. They are very beautiful.

    From watching your vids you are now working with procelain so this project is perfect for porcelain! Hope you can do them again and with the transparency of the porcelain you could just cut the top of them and so the glow through them is also classy through the solid bottom. Beautiful. My daughter has two globe cut out large 12 in cut outs someone did. I love them

    I am currently in the advanced going on AP ceramics class at my high school...I have just one question...I am carving a tealight and was wondering how I could smooth the edges once I'm finished carving to get rid of all that "extra" clay, in other words the flakes of clay from carving. I am using raku clay and it is going to be put through the raku process.

    Ok,,,, , the carving is great, but what I was hoping to find were some tips on cleaning up the piece post carving. It can sometimes feel like a herculean task just getting brushes, sponges, scrapers, etc. into all of the carved areas. Do you have any suggestions on efficient final smoothing of a carved piece?

    • @Jonthepotter
      @Jonthepotter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Usually when it is bone dry I will run some sandpaper around the inside, but my wife is a pretty neat carver, and if you carve at the right consistency of leather hard it can make the clean up minimal. I have also used sponges or sandpaper when it is bisques as well, or a combo of all. Each piece is slightly different so I don't have one straight forward answer.

  • @Giannis_Sarafis
    @Giannis_Sarafis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a great work you do! And you are both very skillful. My experience in pottery is negligible. I'm wondering how it would be, if the inner side of the holes were smaller, and the outer wider. It's just a thought, i'm not so sure of the result. Well, great job guys, and what a great channel. Greetings from Greece.

    These are beautiful can you let me know what clay and quantity you used to make this size of votive? Love your videos

  • @Mistellesonn
    @Mistellesonn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know too much about clay so this may be a silly question, but can you reuse all those pieces that she cut away? Or is the clay unusable once it dries out? I think you could also make some very cool sort of inverted designs, where you throw two similarly sized pots, cut one out like this, and then use the cut pieces on the other pot kind of like a mosaic. You would have a (sort of!) matching set!

    I have a question. I carved my mini "lumineer" and have little bits of clay on both the inside and outside at the edge of each carve. It looks like your wife did too. Did she remove all of that or let it get dry and rub it off? Or leave it?
