Hi Dan. The colder outer tubes will not cool the inner warm ones. This is impossible, the warmer inner tubes will warm the outer ones. Heat can only ever move to a cooler place, cold can never move to a warm place. Your body will continue to warm the pad. 2nd law of thermodynamics, basically heat can never move to a warmer place. Hope this helps but you are wrong to worry about it.
I own this pad and use it most weeks, its the most comfortable pad I've ever used, and definitely as warm as it's rated. Im 6ft 2" and around 15 stone and the two edges, whilst not insulated, cause no issues for me. You need to try this pad, inflate to 4/5th's capacity and you'll have a very comfortable and warm nights sleep, this was the pad I have been searching for, and for the price it's a steal.
Well this is an interesting discussion. What we are talking about here is 'heat transfer' - and that's how the cold ground cools your body or else how your body heat transfers to the ground. I think you are half right here with your thinking, and there is a concern. When camping, your sleeping body usually touches the mattress/pad above the insulated part and that stops or slows the body heat from transferring to the cold ground below. So the main insulation here is good, and is what the R rating measures. The higher the R value, the better. But there is a secondary heat transfer from the mattress/pad sides to the cold or ambient air of the tent, and the inflated air connection between the parts of the pad provides the heat transfer 'bridge' between your warm body heat and the colder air in the tent. That said, it's usually the cold ground below your sleeping pad that is the main problem when sleeping in winter conditions, not so much the air temperature inside the tent. Plus some tents are warmer than others, in terms of the inside air temperature on those cold nights. I can't think of a reason why the outer tubes of this Flextail pad are not insulated, other than to save a little weight. But maybe it's still a better pad than many others. Perhaps it's worth doing a direct comparison with other pads, in terms of weight versus R value, and then with a real-world camping test of how each one actually performs on a cold night or on icy ground. My own camping solution in cold weather is usually to take an extra layer of foam or reflective padding to place below the sleeping pad. Plus your sleeping bag choice also makes a huge difference. If, like me, you only camp occasionally, then the best solution is to take extra layers, because then you can deal with being too cold, or else too hot. At Easter time, I was still using my winter gear. In May, I'm never too sure if I need a winter sleeping bag or a summer one. I'll find out next weekend. As usual, thanks for your videos.
That bright orange might just save your life if you get into trouble on the moors. I get all the stealth camping stuff, but I'd rather be a bit more visible sometimes. As long as its in your tent when you don't want to be seen it should be fine.
Hey mate good vid, dont worry about the mat, as long as a certain percentage of body heat is reflected it will keep the outer lengths warm via convection. No point insulating the whole thing. Dont let it worry you, test it and see.
The insulation stops your body heat going into the mat so the air in the middle does not heat up. You are right that the air will equalize in temperature through the pad but that doesn't affect the insulation effect very much at all. You aren't lying on the outer tubes, they are there to keep you on the mat (that's why they are thicker than the inner ones). The area that your body is on is insulated and your body heat is not escaping to the ground, and that's the important part.
I’ve got no problem with the colour. I take your point about the insulation value but I guess the whole thing is a balance between size/weight and comfort/insulation. The only meaningful test is whether or not it works in the cold.
Extremely good points you have raised, any inside insulated ones we have ever used have had the insulation on all the tubes, both top and bottom. Will be interested in your eventual conclusions. Thank you for sharing this video. Stay well, stay safe, Helen and Katarin Juska-Law and Terri with Robyn.
I am a very hot sleeper so still having support but the ability to keep a bit cooler will be a good thing for me, I have one coming soon, I ordered the Mummy version though. I hope you are doing well mate
there must be a mylar film vulcanized inside for heat reflection; also, check flextail flexgear mosquito repellent/camping lamp kit, its AWESOME edit: I like the color, when I go kayak camping I am on an orange theme setup :) edit: the way the whole insulated mattress was presented to me was like this: dont look at it like the ground cold rising up and making you cold, look at it like the cold cold ground sucking the heat out of your body hence the barrier to reflect your body heat back to you
I jist bought myself the new One Tigris Obsidian pad. Uses some of the same technology as the Thermarests and has an V value of 5.2. Sure I paid about £68 when it first launched. It comes with a huge pump sack that doubles as a dry bag and packs down nice and small. Its a large pad aswell not a mummy one.
Hello Dan , I wish that all makers of tents would offer colour choice on their products , how hard can it be to have the material in 3/4 colours , Light bright for Mountain use , Green and browns for Woodland users , and brighter ones for those who like to camp on sights or for the parks / beaches !.🤔
Was checking this pad out the other day on the website. Id prefer a darker colour personally, but as others have said if inflating in your tent its not that important. Reminds me of the UL80's profile, where the edges keep you centered, so doubt the lack of insulation will matter much. I do agree that you should hold off 'reviewing' it until youve used it out for a couple of nights. Maybe keep these types of videos as first look ones perhaps.
the UL80 would be the best out there if they didn`t bloody deflate!! , i`ve bought 4 (for my family to go to festivals etc) and 2 of them go down over night , 50% efficiency just isnt good enough even for 40 quid
Hi Dan. No the colour wouldn’t bother me much unless I was trying to stealth camp with just a tarp. I really enjoy your videos on stuff and over the years have bought a lot thanks to you. But!! I’ve said this before it really helps to know how much things are. So my question is how much is the mat ??? 😂🤣😂😂😂take care.
Ey up me duck. The colour I don't think matters so much as it'll be inside a tent, hammock or bivvy bag and as long as those are a more stealthy colour it'll be fine. The insulation, I honestly don't know fella, it needs to be tested in cold conditions. Have a good weekend Dan 👍🙂
Dan, I heàr ya about the cold air travelling thru the chambers from the outside 2. However, wouldn't this also keep the warmer air moving throughout the air mattress as well, keeping the heat distribution moving and circulating.......i dont know really, maybe its a double edged sword! God bless 👍👍
Hi Dan, great content as ever, is there a air mat or similar that you would recommend for the larger guy. Equipment for the really tall or heavy can be really difficult to find. Might be an idea for a series of videos looking at getting those out camping who are away from the normal demographic!!
I want a new mat myself, naturehike have brought a new one out which is thicker than the previous version so should be comfy and is claiming a 8.8R rating just waiting for some reviews to come up about it first.
We don't plan to sell that model either. The thickness is 12cm, which is too thick. After using it a few times, we felt like we were sleeping on water, shaking. At the same time, the weight is also heavier. I suggest you choose Lighttour R7.5.
is the mummy pad dog shit? it seems too narrow to me. I have the Therm-a-rest NeoAir Topo Luxe but i dont think it will be good for winter camping. I do have a 4 season tent though. Comfort factor for this pad is the best i have ever had.
Dan can you let me know where you got that spiky mat you sometimes use. They not at go out doors . I do remember one of your videos saying it's very comfortably 👍
Hey Dan good to see another great vid colour wouldn’t bother me too much but a wider colour choice would be better as long as it works and keeps you warm job done Can you look at some of the kilos gear and give us your opinion please Dan
Well i have this mat and its good for me been very comfy and had alot of good reviews and with the colour it makes no difference its inside the tent not that bright that you will see it through tent
I follow your reasoning here. Is the company's R rating an average from all tubes or is it a theoretical number based on the insulated tubes? It pays to read the further comments you include from Ultralight Outdoor Gear that you post further down in your video introduction.
Nah Dan, the outer edges need ro be clear due to the seam. The point is it's not the air keeping you warm, it's the reflectix inside. Time will tell, try it out and see if you feel a cold spot. I hate the colour. Also it's a pretty big pack size! Thanks for the vid!
Test it in cold winter conditions, then youll know for certain either way .. This surely needs to be just an initial first unpacking look video.. As others have said, the bright colour isn't that important..

I wouldn't care much about the color, but the enormous, packed size is a hard no for me.
the pack size is the main issues for me, if it had insulation in the outer tubes it would be even bigger!
Can you recommend another pad with a smaller pack size mate? It is also an issue for me?
@@Bringlish1986 Thermarest are probably the best, lightest and smallest packed but they are pretty expensive.

The air mixing in the chambers of the Mat , is a very good question pal .🙂, I think it would mix slowly over the night .🤔
It can't mix mate. Heat can only move in one direction.
I am fine with the colour , got one a few weeks ago but yet to try it out.

It's not meant to heat the air inside. It reflects your body heat back to you and the base reflects the cold back to ground.
Definitely a concern but will have to wait till winter to truly find out
Very good vid mate , that mat is meant for mountain / jungle use , where being seen is most important for emergencies .
Lots of comments about the colour being OK.
I reckon it could be bright orange on the bottom, but a stealthy colour on the top. Best of both worlds.
Dan one thing to always remember is HEAT ALWAYS MOVES TOWARDS ME COLD never the other way
What counts is that insulation under your torso! It's essential to keep the core warm!
Cheers dan lad you say it as you see i think your concerns are along the right lines.
