We are all human and we ALL make mistakes in our lives, i have in my younger years, coming from an abusive childhood. Things happen to us in life, if you do something wrong, you take your punishment, learn from it, and never do it again, which you (and me) have done. You come across as an honest, hard working, kind, caring man. You have a family and a happy, settled life now. Keep doing what you're doing and don't concern yourself with any of this persons nonsense, the people watching your channel won't. Ignore this sad, lonely trouble maker, and carry on being happy. Hey Dan. I work as a corrections officer in State Penitentiary in Southern USA and it's a maximum security prison, so you can imagine what I see every day and the level of inmate I deal with. I treat inmates like humans so they return the respect and I can tell you that even the worst offenders can pull themselves around and be decent human beings, even while serving life sentences. Just want you to know that I can tell a genuine reformed character when I see one, and you obviously are one of those. You learned your lesson quickly and I wouldn't have had you pegged as an ex con, especially for the type of offence you hinted at. You are a gentle, honest soul, so ignore the idiots and carry on as you are! God bless you. Xx

It’s a tiny number of people who are strong enough to completely change the direction of their lives. What you have described here puts you in that minority. Interesting given your job experience. Actions speak louder than words and not being in any trouble for 17 years or whatever is a massive factor in whether he’s turned his life around. So massive thumbs up to him for that. However, there are a few red flags that if it was a prisoner wanting parole would concern me. That is that he is blaming others still rather than taking that responsibility on. He opens with being the victim, he blames his ex for his behaviour still. And he also focused on the 1 crime when he brushed over it when he said something that told us he had been in trouble many times. Personally, he’s not been in any trouble since, which he deserves judging by, rather than his past. But I’d hope as a corrections officer the classic red flags in the content of what he has said you’d notice is common among prisoners that don’t have remorse and he’s still in the habit of blaming other people for things he does wrong. After all, if you blame other people for your actions it only takes a moment for things to fall apart and another person is the cause of doing something bad. But on the flip side, he’s got by for 17 years, and the world is full of people who don’t end up in prison that habitually blame everyone but themselves in life. The upshot is, I don’t see the need for anyone to be trying to ruin his career over something he’s paid the price for so long ago. It’s only relevant if it is a recent pattern of behaviour which there seems to be nothing being said about.

It’s not a sin to stay down… some mental disabilities do this …not the choice of the individual ….once it lifts, they’re back to well again. It’s not a sin to be unwell.

But in response to your sentiment your absolutely right (speaking as someone who is trapped down that dark hole you describe) Personally watching dans videos I find them to be both therapeutic and uplifting and inspiring. You don’t need to be a psychologist to realise that Dan is salt of the earth and doesn’t have a nasty bone in his body. He’s always struck me as an Honest decent trustworthy guy. I would guess that most of us would make the same choice he did given the circumstances he hinted at. And it took courage to stand up for himself. In this life turning the other cheek just doesn’t work. You can either stand up for yourself or get steamrolled. I bet the person/s involved never abused Dan again? Positive outcome ? Hi dan, mate i got back in to wild camping and a lot of it was down to watching your videos, you probably won't remember but about 4 years ago me and my best mate met you at hainworth wood. You were an absolute legend with us and we had a great crack. We were new to it and didn't have all the best gear but you just told us straight what you thought and gave us loads of advice. Everything you do is real, funny and very informative, your a top man mate and fair play to you. Balls to anyone who tries to slate you. Keep going mate 👍 💪 👌
as a former convict in the uk, good on you for getting yourself sorted, i did 28 years for couple dozen armed robberies back in the 80s when i was a lad, when i got out, i moved to thailand for 10 years, converted to buddhism, got married, had kids, and now im living life as an honest man and devout buddhist, and i never shy from my past, in fact i embrace it, without our pasts you and i wouldnt be the better men we are

Some of us have been there. It's inspiring to see someone turn their life around and do normal crap like camping. When you're in that life, seeing it gives you something to concentrate on. Aspire to be a regular guy camping... Just saying.
People change. I remember meeting one of our neighbours when I was a kid - the husband of one of my mums friends. He was always a really decent bloke. Years later he passed away and his driveway was packed with reporters. Turned out he'd been a famous bank robber in his youth. Like I said, people change. Cheers

i like you even better now tbh, we all have things in the past we aren't necessarily proud of. Thing is the outdoor community have been some of the most welcoming and friendly people I've ever met/been part of, good on you for standing up for yourself in the first place.
I used to be a peison officer and I can honestly say that I never treated the prisoners any different to any other person. I've retired now and I've crissed paths with a few of the ex cons that were in the jail I worked in and even kept in touch with a couple of them. One guy in particular that I got chatting with on the outside thanked me for helping him study for his driving theory test (I used to be a driving instructor) I also gave him tips on how to drive properly and what to expect on his driving test when he got out. He told me he passed first time. Anyway, it turned out we had a mutual friend that I sometimes would go and play guitar with amd sing songs, you know the sort of thing. One time I went eound and this ex con was there with his guitar as well. We all hung out playing our favorite tunes and chatting for a while. That guy had just served 11 years for multiple bank robberies on the same day!! Being in jail doesn't mean you're a bad person, because the jails are half full of people, who like yourself, fucked up and got caught. What matters is how you live your life when you get out. *Edit Apologies for the atrocious spelling, I was wearing the wrong glasses when I first typed this. 🤣
You told this years ago - and I don't care. Mistakes were made. I like you as you are. And your enthusiasm for the outdoors is maybe from that prison time. So in the end it was a healthy lesson.

Mate, you're doing an excellent job of not only TH-cam channels but of your life as well, not many people were angels when younger, my life wasn't exactly like yours but close enough, abuse among other things add mental health, the past is the past, we both certainly learnt lessons from it, we become wiser as we get older, and you'll always have people who try to put a stick through the wheel, try not to pay too much attention to them (i know it can be hard sometimes) but look at what you have achieved, how many people you've helped and be greafull to what you are and have and you'll feel like a king, people follow your channel know who you are and what you are, so keep the good work you do mate 👍

Hi dan, mate i got back in to wild camping and a lot of it was down to watching your videos, you probably won't remember but about 4 years ago me and my best mate met you at hainworth wood. You were an absolute legend with us and we had a great crack. We were new to it and didn't have all the best gear but you just told us straight what you thought and gave us loads of advice.

as a former convict in the uk, good on you for getting yourself sorted, i did 28 years for couple dozen armed robberies back in the 80s when i was a lad, when i got out, i moved to thailand for 10 years, converted to buddhism, got married, had kids, and now im living life as an honest man and devout buddhist, and i never shy from my past, in fact i embrace it, without our pasts you and i wouldnt be the better men we are

Some of us have been there. It's inspiring to see someone turn their life around and do normal crap like camping. When you're in that life, seeing it gives you something to concentrate on. Aspire to be a regular guy camping... Just saying.

People change. I remember meeting one of our neighbours when I was a kid - the husband of one of my mums friends. He was always a really decent bloke. Years later he passed away and his driveway was packed with reporters. Turned out he'd been a famous bank robber in his youth.

I used to be a peison officer and I can honestly say that I never treated the prisoners any different to any other person. I've retired now and I've crissed paths with a few of the ex cons that were in the jail I worked in and even kept in touch with a couple of them.
One guy in particular that I got chatting with on the outside thanked me for helping him study for his driving theory test (I used to be a driving instructor) I also gave him tips on how to drive properly and what to expect on his driving test when he got out. He told me he passed first time.
Anyway, it turned out we had a mutual friend that I sometimes would go and play guitar with amd sing songs, you know the sort of thing. One time I went eound and this ex con was there with his guitar as well. We all hung out playing our favorite tunes and chatting for a while. That guy had just served 11 years for multiple bank robberies on the same day!!
Being in jail doesn't mean you're a bad person, because the jails are half full of people, who like yourself, fucked up and got caught. What matters is how you live your life when you get out.

Mate, you're doing an excellent job of not only TH-cam channels but of your life as well, not many people were angels when younger, my life wasn't exactly like yours but close enough, abuse among other things add mental health, the past is the past, we both certainly learnt lessons from it, we become wiser as we get older, and you'll always have people who try to put a stick through the wheel, try not to pay too much attention to them (i know it can be hard sometimes) but look at what you have achieved, how many people you've helped and be greafull to what you are and have and you'll feel like a king, people follow your channel know who you are and what you are, so keep the good work you do mate 👍
