I actually loved the Davey Jones arc. That scene where he’s playing the organ, and you realize that he had to literally give his heart to something, was crushing and thematically hopeless feeling. One of the best “villains” of all time. Great CG, too.
Other fav scenes of Davy Jones is when he responds to a summon to the British Officer and when he summarily executes a whole ship of survivors out of rage. These small scenes really lent depth to the legend being a real breathing person!
i watched the original trilogy for the first time this last year and my god, i was shocked to see CGI and set design that good from 2006 with a 200mil budget. for reference, even the weakest Marvel movies like Ant Man and The Wasp have 300mil budgets and look worse with less stakes, and Spider-man 3 came out in 2007 with worse looking CGI. what Pirates was able to accomplish and still not looking dated in 2022 is incredible
@@deanmoriarty6015 Me forever defending Gore verbinski’s amazing trilogy! 🎥 ☠️☠️☠️ (Part 1) For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with. Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free. And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1?? As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Elizabeth was caught in Jack’s illusion of trusting him to get Will back that had nothing to do with him which was a lie. Will being on Davy Jones ship had everything to do with Jack lol. It was Jack who took advantage of her feelings to find the chest by telling her if you want to find will you need to find the chest of Davy Jones! But it was an illusion so Jack can get closer to find the chest of Davy Jones to control him. But to also go back and save will after Jack got what he wanted. Have to disagree on your stand on the second and third film. Those were without a doubt amazing sequels that expanded on the universe, increased the stakes, and gave an epic finale.
Second one is really great. The end how everyone is fighting for the heart is just perfection. But then the 3rd one... It just had too much going on In it. Ok movie at best

Still my favorite trilogy ever. Call it nostalgia or whatever but nothing gives me the satisfaction like the pirates trilogy. The music, dialogues, soundtrack, jack and the world itself
I think it's just that it's so fun and interesting, we haven't gotten something like it in so long now and it just holds up so well, definitely time for a rewatch
I think Jack being made the focus of "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End" was fine, and even good. We had a story with Will and Elizabeth as the focus, so it made sense to give one to Jack. The issue for me is that every movie after also focused on Jack after he no longer needed it. Maybe the fourth movie could have focused more on Barbossa instead. I think that could have been interesting.
I think the fourth movie should have been about Calypso since they had released her within the third movie, it just made no sense to make a movie about Jack just randomally abandoning the compass which just so happens to have a curse on it. If I were writing the story I would have had the fourth movie to have Calypso carry out her vengeance on the pirates after being sealed away for a 1000 years.
Say what you will, the original trilogy was an amazing masterpiece that still holds up today. I rewatched it very recently with all the same emotions I've always had for the films. The last two movies are a different story for sure though...
"Masterpiece", lmfao people really throw that word around easily these days. Dead Man's Chest and At World's End are unbelievably bloated, sloppy movies with a ton of needless subplots and long sections of both films that end up being completely pointless. They are the very definition of a bloated mess. They may have fun moments but the writing is extremely flawed. Curse of the Black Pearl is the only actually good one.
I think they already had the perfect ending for Captain Jack Sparrow in At World's End in that he ended up where he began in the first film on small boat sailing out to sea looking for his next adventure.
I think the filmmakers wanted to go bigger with each movie and bit off more than they could chew. Black Pearl started simple with a cursed pirate crew looking for treasure with a loose code of parley. When At World's End released there was now a whole pirate society with pirate lords for each part of the world.
I feel like you had the right idea but misplaced where the downfall happened. The first three are all very solid films that deliver. After that trilogy was where things started falling apart.
yeah i’m surprised at the suggestion that the downfall started with Dead Man’s Chest. the original trilogy is great, and while it may be a little convoluted, it all pays off and is a thrill. Davey Jones is a fucking phenomenal character as well.
His foundation for saying the downfall started with Dead Man's chest is that it undoes some of the character's arcs. He says in Curse of the Black Peril the characters start at point A and end at point C. Then in dead man's chest some characters go backwards to say point B or maybe to point A. And some arrive at point C by the end of At World's End, and others still haven't made it back to point C. whether or not this does happen I can't say as it has been a while since I have seen the Pirates movies.
@@deanmoriarty6015 It does not all pay off. Half of At World's End is a gigantic waste of time. Dead Man's Chest has some bloat as well, although it's nowhere near as bad.

The original Pirates of the Caribbean is as close as you can ever get to a perfect adventure movie. Dead Man's chest and At World's end were a little too ambitious and long, but still really good and tied a great knot on the whole trilogy. On Stranger Tides was... Eh. But Johnny Depp still killed it and had a few great scenes. DMTNT was even more stupid and at this point Johnny Depp was phoning it in(but like come on who could blame him) and his writing just was not as good.
I think for all of us, pirates of the Caribbean IS johnny depp. It's tied together with nostalgia and his unbelievably great acting. No one remembers how DMTNT was bad because the focus shifted to Disney removing Depp. I think no one would watch the movie if they dare to cast someone else as Jack Sparrow. Unless they reboot the whole thing and bring in all new characters completely living the last ones untouched
I think 'downfall' is a very strong word. As insane as the movies became, they never stopped being entertaining. I can re-watch all five of them over and over again. The last two even had elements that got me pretty excited to see, and I wasn't disappointed. All five are not flawless masterpieces or anything, and some may be technically better than others, but they're all a hell of a lot of fun, and I think that's the point of them.
It almost is … it was a mistake to have the entire film center around gathering the pirate lords, show a big pirate fleet and even bigger EITC armada … just to have a 1 vs 1 battle. The maelstrom sequence is a perfect and flawless action set piece from every point of view, is a masterclass of a well constructed and directed action scene, but don’t put me hundreds of ships ready to battle on screen if they aren’t going to do anything.
If Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, it'll easily make over $1 billion because people will go and support him Surprised Disney didn't bring him back seeing how money hungry they are
7:08-7:27 “The only real certainty is that whatever the pirates franchise does next, it needs to be new, it revisited the same plot lines and core ideas too many times. They need new characters, new ideas, and honestly smaller stakes. The more the franchise focuses on the end of the world, the more it just feels like it doesn’t matter.”. I’ve been saying the exact same thing for years now except about Marvel MCU movies. But in all honesty, you couldn’t have said that any better.
Who in their right mind would think of turning a theme park ride into a movie? And then for it to turn out as successful as it did. That's a stroke of genius compared to the recycled garbage we have now
I don't think these movies are a downfall. Athe first three movies are perfect! I wouldn't change anything about them. The 4th one is not as bad as people say it is, but the 5th one is the downfall. But I still love these movies, the soundtracks, and the creatures behind them.
I would say that narratively I would like to see more of inspiration taken from "Sinbad the Sailor" to provide some more variety to the magical/mythic elements. It would definitely provide more than a "cursed immortality" that has been at the core of the franchise so far.
What do you mean? Dead Man’s Chest and at World’s End are great and they continue the characters well and the stakes were good I’d say 2 and 3 are the best in the series

If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! 😕 The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better. Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will. She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3! As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies. Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die.. Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth. Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈 when Will challenging Davy Jones. Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key? Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏 As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️ (Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot.. Jack sparrow is the master at controlling peoples hearts to get what he wants and out of a situation. He screwed over Will so Jack can save himself… But it worked in his favor for his reunion to meet his father.. William even told Jack you screwed me over but because of you I was reunited with my father after such a long time.. Elizabeth was caught in Jack’s illusion of trusting him to get Will back that had nothing to do with him which was a lie. Will being on Davy Jones ship had everything to do with Jack lol. Jack left on good terms with Elizabeth and William in the first movie. Elizabeth had every right to believe Jack…. It was Jack who took advantage of her feelings to find the chest by telling her if you want to find will you need to find the chest of Davy Jones! But it was an illusion so Jack can get closer to find the chest of Davy Jones to control him. But to also go back and save will after Jack got what he wanted. If people don’t understand these movies that’s their problem. But I understand every movie! That’s why I rank 2>3>1 ☠️☠️☠️ (Part 3) I’m sorry to break it to you but the curse of the Black Pearl is my least favorite in the trilogy. I rewatch the trilogy every few months. And to me I just don’t find it as deep or as interesting compared to dead man’s chest or at worlds end. Curse of the Black Pearl is still a well written amazing film. It’s just I’d rather choose having William struggle on trying to save his father from Davy Jones along side using very clever strategy and dialogue during the dice liar game on Davy Jones to get key from him.. VS William in the first movie who just wants to save Elizabeth…. I love darker storytelling and when steaks are becoming higher! Dead man’s chest gave me everything.. Elizabeth was a useful damsel in stress female lead in the first movie. But I would rather choose her character development in the second movie compared to her in the first movie. Elizabeth pulled a gun on Beckett’s face. She went on her own journey to save William. Who also taught her how to defend herself with swords. And that paid off well at the end of the movie! Jack sparrow’s dialog and clever intelligence grew (MORE) in (dead men’s chest) and (at worlds end) and you cannot convince me otherwise. He just knows how to play the game like that….. You can’t trust Jack sparrow on making the right decisions because he’s supposed to be ahead of the game on everyone’s perspective on him. If Jack was easy to follow with answers he wouldn’t be Jack sparrow lol. Not to mention what’s with this opinion on people saying Jack sparrow was someone you should not mess with?? Jack sparrow literally wants you to mess with him so he can use that to his advantage to pull you in under his string, for you to doubt him in order to rise up above everyone else. You were caught in his illusion the entire time so he can be superior at the end of the situation and screw you over. If Jack sparrow was someone to NOT mess with, just like Davy Jones.. Then you wouldn’t be caught in Jack sparrow’s illusion on being the worst pirate in the world.. No seriously if Jack had the same fear approach as Davy Jones…. Then all you would have to do were to look at Jack sparrow for a few seconds and be so scared of him, Everyone would just run away.. literally what’s the fun in that for Jack Sparrow?! If he was someone to not mess like people claim. Then (WHY) do people keep on assisting 100% on messing with Jack Sparrow?? Please answer that man lol. That literally makes no sense… 😂
I guess I’m in the minority in loving the first 4 films. Honestly it’s my favorite non-book derived series (books were written after the films including a FANTASTIC prequel)! The last film did disappoint me. I really wanted Penelope Cruz’s character to come back and continue where the 4th film ended. I would love another film to wrap up the story, but I fear that won’t happen. But hey, you never know savvy. 😆
Pirates of the Caribbean downfall started with POTC: Stranger Tides, Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2, & 3 is the perfect trilogy. I hope we get a Pirates of the Caribbean 6 someday.
Black Pearl was great because it was, for the most part, a grounded adventure, like Indiana Jones. The world was believable with a little supernatural twist. By the time we hit the 3rd one with the giant voodoo lady, massive whirlpools, and alternate dimension, the series had lost touch with its roots and was all the worse for it.
Not even close to the reason why the later movies failed. It's because of the story and bastardization of Cpatain Jack Sparrow as a character and too much bathos. This is a common problem with most big movies these days anyway.
@@SoulbentAnime nah, that part is definitely true. As the movies ventured further and further into fantasy, they were worse for doing so. Maybe that’s not the only reason the sequels sucked but it’s 100% a contributing factor.
There is a book about it called “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom”. I love the novel as it tells the story of Jacks early life in becoming a pirate and obtaining the Black Pearl.
It's so strange that producers/writers still don't realize that intimate and relatable stakes beats apocalyptic stakes every time. We see it time and again in critically successful films, but Hollywood keeps falling in to the same pitfalls.
I think they should’ve just kept Pirates of the Caribbean as a trilogy and then any later movies after that should’ve be an offshoot like “the adventures of Jack sparrow“ or something. That way you wouldn’t have to shoehorn in the overplayed Pirates movie formula of having a fight a cursed crew and things like that.
It’s so hilarious to watch you desperately trying to slip in as much shade on Johnny Depp as you can without outright saying that you hate him, since you know that you backed the wrong horse with Amber, but can’t admit it
Another great video! Would love to see you talk about why Pushing Daises was canceled. The show only ran for 2 seasons (2007-2009) but won 7 Emmys and was well received by both audiences and critics!
The 4th one isn't bad, definitely not my cup of tea, but it's still a pretty decent movie However if you said that, Dead men tell no tales was your favorite- That would've been a different story
I agree 4 and 5 are awful, but the first 3 are amazing. Dead Man’s Chest is my favorite. Davy Jones’ and Calypso’s story lines are some of the best in blockbuster history. I know it’s a hot take but I think it’s the best trilogy ever made (yes better than LOTR or the original Star Wars).
Any kind of story you tell that doesn't have a clear and definitive ending will go downhill. Most movie franchises go through this even the great marvel now.
You hit the right points perfectly! Making Jack Sparrow the main character instead of a supporting one was exactly where they went wrong, and the stakes do need to be closer to home and more personal. A lot of people like to think of the series as a trilogy and then two unnecessary movies, but it's not really how the series is structured. You have Black Pearl, then a two-parter focused on Jack escaping Davy Jones. That works perfectly fine. 4's plot doesn't even center around Jack, but he's forced into the spotlight the whole movie. Blackbeard and the Spanish armada seeking the fountain of youth is the actual plot. I re-watched 5 maybe a year ago, and it wasn't as bad as I remembered, but there's so much recycled material. Going forward, they're going to need a solid main cast with Jack in the background as a supporting character enhancing their story, whether they continue to use Henry Turner and Carina or go with new characters. I've always thought each film should follow the story of a different historical pirate, and the common thread between them all is Jack Sparrow having interacted with all of them. A legend in the background who could tell you amazing stories he witnessed firsthand. Assassin's Creed Black Flag proves there are many good new pirate stories that can be told in media, but could modern Disney be up to the task? I don't believe so unfortunately.
I absolutely love the first two films. The side characters were all hilarious. I remember seeing Pirates 2 at midnight on its premiere and the end scene where Captain Barbosa is still alive, the whole theater was like "WHAT! WOW!" Then I fell asleep during Pirates 3 during its premiere. Just was not as engaging or entertaining.
I agree the first film is iconic and nearly flawless, but I really love the soap opera battle for the power to control the seas in the first sequel. I love seeing Jack squirm in reaction to squid face, I love Norrington's quest for redemption, and I love Elizabeth's moral decline as she becomes more a pirate herself. It feels incomplete, yes, but I do feel like it's more mature and character focused than the first film was. Unlike most people though, I do think the third film got too weird to really end any of the plot threads in any satisfactory kind of way, it felt entirely focused on a complex plot devoid of character focus, in stark contrast to the second film. Despite being shallow, I did enjoy the fourth a lot more than the third. But yeah, the fifth film was embarrassing and sad to watch.
The original pirate trilogy definitely got world building right, all the locations were tonally consistent and whimsical. Cannibal island, that pirate haven (Tortuga?) , Singapore, pirate HQ (Shipwreck Cove) were my favs. Each movie/location was consistent with the overarching themes that it was the twilight of the pirates and imperialism (or specifically the British Empire) was making the world a smaller place where legends and monsters were going extinct. In addition weaving in real historical figures. Frankly one of my all time favorite scenes was the Brethren Court when they elect the Pirate King. Of course the important items from each leader is literally junk. Of course the pirate code is a huge brick of a book carried by two elderly librarians (who look like they've studied it for decades). And of course Captain Teague is the realist most stereotypical looking pirate a kid would recgonise! Love it all.
i dont think it got progressively worse. the original 3 are amazing, by themselves and together. 4 isnt bad, but it isnt as good, so i guess its "worse" by technicality. 5 id say is bad, but that doesnt really prove the rule of it getting "progressively worse."
@@maurolorenzotongco5521 Sure, but the damage is already done. And Disney did help Amber did most of the damage on Depp's reputation. Which is why He is never going to work with the parasite named Disney. Unless, of course, Disney fulfilled His request on getting 1 million Llamas.
2:57 2 and 3 feel undercooked and not well written? These movies had character arcs, and an actual story to tell. Imagine if it had nothing with no direction at all! Cough cough 4/5 Dead man’s chest and At worlds end. Need so much more respect than what people are giving it. At worlds end was endgame before endgame. Yes the movie was a mess but it actually still had a story and a direction to go with! There is something there for the main characters to gain. All of them had their own ideologies and goals. That’s what made the movie complex and different from the rest. ☠️
Disney misunderstood what made the first pirates great. It was the swashbuckling action and the personable relationships between characters mixed with a bit of supernatural mystique. For all the other films they went waaaaayy too deep on the supernatural and lost the character. 2 & 3 aren’t awful but 4 & 5 just make me sad.
I don't think the pirates trilogy is a downfall. Sure the 4th movie felt different and shallow. Visually very distant from previous pirates movies. I enjoyed the 5th movie. But not as the trilogy. In my opinion the trilogy is great. I enjoyed very much.
I feel like their issues with the newer ones is that like many franchises, they have to go BIG to be good. Since pirates is a fantasy universe, they can have crazy end of the world stakes for whatever they want. It works for every other marvel movie so why not that. But pirates aren't superheroes. They shouldn't be having to deal with saving the world or something. as cool and cinematic as it can be, its not really a pirate kind of adventure
You can't make sequel after sequel without struggling to figure out what to narrate next. Especially in Hollywood. And even worse now that they fired Depp because of accusations made by an evil ex.
The trilogy was great, but the last two were cash grabs. There were only supposed to be three movies, but Disney wanted money. I only count the trilogy. The fourth is alright, but the fifth is terrible. The third movie gives an epic finale, although I wish Elizabeth ended up with Jack. Otherwise, great movie.
I vehemently disagree with you. The first three movies are fantastic. Had a great time watching them back then as a teen and can still enjoy them to this day. It all went to hell after At Worlds End though. Apples and Oranges I guess. What also didn't help was once Disney acquired Marvel Studios and LucasFilms it was clear what they were going to prioritize....
idk if downfall is the right term because as you said financially the movies did amazingly well and the pirates franchise is open wide to original stories i would enjoy seeing another movie and i think a lot of other people as well
From what I felt watching pirates 5, it seems Disney is shifting the spotlight away from Jack even before the Amber Heard thing happened, and to be honest I'm kinda ok with that if pirates 6 can finish Jack's story line properly.
My ranks on pirates of the carribean from best to worst: 1: Pirates Of The Caribbean Curse Of The Black Pearl 2: Pirates Of The Caribbean At World’s End 3: Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest 4: Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales 5: Pirates Of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides
I think Dead Mans Chest is decent. Colourful. Davy Jones is the bomb. At Worlds End… is a tough watch tbh. Very grey. Dialogue is messy. On Stranger Tides WASTED the fountain of youth idea.
Me forever defending gore verbinski’s amazing trilogy! You can’t do another pirates film don’t get me wrong if they could JUMP AT THE OPPORTUNITY AND GO FOR IT! But it will NEVER HAPPEN! You know why? It’s not that Disney doesn’t want it it’s that given how Johnny Dep was basically fired by Disney and all major studios once Amber Heard said what she did even though he won the trial and proved what she said was a lie in a unanimous jury verdict it’s because he was originally fired from basically every major studio he’s not working with basically every major studio anymore by choice. Look no matter how much the fans want it no matter how much Disney wants it Johnny Dep says no and THATS FINAL SO ACCEPT IT!
I actually liked all of the movies except for Strange Tides. I even liked dead men tell no tales but in all fairness that was the first POTC I ever saw (I didn’t have the DVD and the only they only played it at like 10pm on the movie channel and my parents were very strict about what I was allowed to schedule on the cable)
The character arcs were better?? In the first movie?! 3:05 would definitely choose Elizabeth in both 2/3 Then herself in the first movie. Elizabeth was not useless but she definitely was not at her best. She just took the fall for Will and kept on screaming during the ghost scenes. In the second movie Will taught her how weld a sword and it paid off well. She pulled a gun to the second villain Beckett’s face. She’s a lot stronger and braver compared to herself in the original film who really did nothing besides the final act. I love Will’s development further of accepting himself as half pirate and struggling with himself and his identity. And trying to make a decision on either saving his father or Elizabeth! While trying to keep himself alive in the process. His dialogue shit talking to Davy Jones during liars dice. Telling him knowing about the key is not part of the game but you can still walk away!! I would choose this development OVER his identity in the first movie. Who just wants to Save the girl he likes since he was seven. 🤣
I love the original trilogy and very much like parts 4,5 as well, don’t get the hate for them. Maybe the are not as high quality but they are very fun and the escaping scene in the beginning of the 4th movie is one of my favorites!
“So tell me, what’s become of my ship?” I wish I had seen Deadman’s Chest in theaters, I hear people went wild for that scene, and given Barbossa is my favorite character, I would have probably joined in the cheering.
You're making good point on why and where 2 and 3 movie turned the wrong way, but anyway, Pirates are still extremelly great trilogy. I don't count those marketologists fanfics as 4 and 5. And if new Pirates will ever happen, it should be something brand new. If to have some old chracters - maybe Jack for 1-2 scenes cameo. And Flying Dutchman could be good basement for new film.
I will agree with you in that the second and third films didn't feel NECESSARY - 'Black Pearl' stood and still stands perfectly well on its own - but while the first two sequels may have lacked the first film's magic to a degree, they were decent films in their own right. 'World's End', I think, is the better of the two, tying a whole lot of different plot threads together very skillfully and providing a satisfying ending to the story. Even 'Stranger Tides' was not horrible; it had some good scenes - but it should have stopped there. Disney's problem these days is that they don't know when to stop; they won't stop milking a cash cow until it's dropped dead of dehydration.
In my opinion, I think one concept the first movies did well but later underutilized is the relationship between beliefs and magic and the civilized world. The approach is almost magic realism for the pirates, they don't even question how or why the magic stuff exist, supersticions are facts. Elizabeth and Will question it because they are entering the more supernatural world. Beckett and company want to know how it works and how to control and make profit out of it. It was interesting. I think the protagonists should be people who are not as familiar with the mythos.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was just as good, If not better, than the first one. The other ones after it were not as good, but the first two were masterpieces
The original trilogy is the best, I don't think anything they did was a mistake (probably the whole Davy Jones locker was but that's it). The world building and how they wrapped up every character storyline was perfect.
I never saw the value in curse of the Black Pearl. To me I couldn’t love it, for the reasons people loved it. It’s still a very fun movie it’s just not as complex or deep as 2 or 3. 🫢 I would choose this development OVER his identity in the first movie. Who just wants to Save the girl he likes since he was seven. 🤣 There’s nothing wrong in the first movie it’s just too simple for my taste! 😖
I used to hate the ending of At Worlds end, as it was too tragic for will, now i've come to appreciate it more, always loved dead man's chest, should have been only 3 movies.
Having just watched them all recently as an adult, I definitely feel like the first movie was amazing, the second and third were pretty good, and the fourth and fifth stunk. If they keep Jack Sparrow as a character, Johnny Depp is the only one to play him. But Sparrow's writing in the fifth was terrible.
These small scenes really lent depth to the legend being a real breathing person!
effects were also amazing, I really like first 2 movies
@@namename2215 Davy Jones was really good, but everything else narratively in those 2 movies was just meh to bad.
agreed
I dont think Davy Jones CGI will ever look bad. Still one of my favorites
i watched the original trilogy for the first time this last year and my god, i was shocked to see CGI and set design that good from 2006 with a 200mil budget.
for reference, even the weakest Marvel movies like Ant Man and The Wasp have 300mil budgets and look worse with less stakes, and Spider-man 3 came out in 2007 with worse looking CGI. what Pirates was able to accomplish and still not looking dated in 2022 is incredible

Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it.

(Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot..

Her development is miles better in (Dead mens chest) compared to herself in the first movie who just takes the fall for William to protect him from Barbosa.
Jack sparrow’s dialog and clever intelligence grew (MORE) in (dead men’s chest) and (at worlds end) and you cannot convince me otherwise. If people think he became a joke after the first movie that sounds like a (YOU PROBLEM) Jack sparrow is pretty intelligent in the second movie on being a master at manipulation and taking advantage of people around him to get himself out of a situation in order to save his life and possibly everyone else’s.
I didn't even like the second. Generic and boring.
I liked the final scene in the 3rd one

HOIST THE COLOURS!!!
This nerd is full of it. All they know is how to hate things.
Yep, the trilogy part :P
I’m tired of people respecting 2/3 I even have problems with the first movie. But all 3 of them told one amazing story! ☠️☠️☠️☠️
4/5 are filler garbage Movies!!
The CG too
"Masterpiece", lmfao people really throw that word around easily these days.
@MarkHogan994 wow it's like you have no taste in movies at all
I think they already had the perfect ending for Captain Jack Sparrow in At World's End in that he ended up where he began in the first film on small boat sailing out to sea looking for his next adventure.
I think the filmmakers wanted to go bigger with each movie and bit off more than they could chew.
Black Pearl started simple with a cursed pirate crew looking for treasure with a loose code of parley.
When At World's End released there was now a whole pirate society with pirate lords for each part of the world.
Actually Pirate societies do exist to that extent. There are like 2 full-fledged pirate republics in recorded history...
I wouldn't mind it as much if they set them up properly in the previous 2 movies.
@@cedricfowler3465 They hinted at it with the code and Elizabeth's seeming learned fascination.
I just can't care.
That would work just fine if the plot wasn't so convoluted. Very few parts of 2 and 3 feel like they got enough time.
The first three films were really good imo. Each character was memorable - even the side characters.

Spot on
I think for all of us, pirates of the Caribbean IS johnny depp.
All five are not flawless masterpieces or anything, and some may be technically better than others, but they're all a hell of a lot of fun, and I think that's the point of them.
not sure if its just me but i really liked the first three
You aren’t alone, buddy.
You're not the only one lol
MOST people love the first three, this guy is talking shite. All three are Amazing!!
I absolutely love the original 3!! ☠️☠️☠️
The vast majority of people love the first 3 movies
God, only three minutes in and so many premises I disagree with. "Pirates" didn't make Johnny Depp, he's been an A-lister since the 80's.
At World's End is a true masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says.
@@Maniac61675 The only problem with the movie
If Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, it'll easily make over $1 billion because people will go and support him
Surprised Disney didn't bring him back seeing how money hungry they are
7:08-7:27 “The only real certainty is that whatever the pirates franchise does next, it needs to be new, it revisited the same plot lines and core ideas too many times. They need new characters, new ideas, and honestly smaller stakes. The more the franchise focuses on the end of the world, the more it just feels like it doesn’t matter.”. I’ve been saying the exact same thing for years now except about Marvel MCU movies. But in all honesty, you couldn’t have said that any better.
dead men tell no tales got carried hard by the cast. awful writing, idiotic plot, but damn Bardem killed it
Back when Disney used to think outside the box
What by making a film based off a ride but toning it down and adding in supernatural shit to make it good? Gimme a break
If they do not re-hire Johnny Depp they will not make a single ounce of profit. That man and that character has earned more respect
Deadmen tell no tales broke so many story lines and made Jack Sparrow an idiot instead of the cunning pirate he was!
I would say that narratively I would like to see more of inspiration taken from "Sinbad the Sailor" to provide some more variety to the magical/mythic elements. It would definitely provide more than a "cursed immortality" that has been at the core of the franchise so far.
What do you mean? Dead Man’s Chest and at World’s End are great and they continue the characters well and the stakes were good
I’d say 2 and 3 are the best in the series
THANK UUUUUUU!!! ☠️☠️☠️
Me forever defending Gore verbinski’s amazing trilogy! 🎥 ☠️☠️☠️
(Part 1) For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best.
Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it.
when Will challenging Davy Jones.
Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
(Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot..
That’s why I rank 2>3>1 ☠️☠️☠️
(Part 3) I’m sorry to break it to you but the curse of the Black Pearl is my least favorite in the trilogy.
Captain Jack Sparrow is the Pirates of the Caribbean
One of the BEST pirates
Ever!
I think Dead Man’s Chest was the first one I ever saw, leaving me confused but entertained nonetheless
i saw the third one after the first one & i was confused about what happened to Jack Sparrow 😄
This is my assessment as well: The movies got less fun and less "believable" the bigger the cosmic stakes got
Not even close to the reason why the later movies failed. It's because of the story and bastardization of Cpatain Jack Sparrow as a character and too much bathos. This is a common problem with most big movies these days anyway.
@@SoulbentAnime I didn’t say that why the movies failed. I was saying the reason that I dislike the sequels, particularly 3.
@@nickmiller8855 you also said it was worse off for it and that's false.
@@SoulbentAnime nah, that part is definitely true. As the movies ventured further and further into fantasy, they were worse for doing so. Maybe that’s not the only reason the sequels sucked but it’s 100% a contributing factor.
Always wanted a prequel taking place before curse of the black pearl.
If the magic of the first film could ever be recaptured it would be a good day in cinema.
i'll agree with that, i did really like the first film, but i def think the franchise got less good over time
It was captured. In the second movie. And the third.
Johnny Depp is Pirates of the Caribbean, you can’t watch it without him.
This is probably a hot take but my favourite Pirates film (that's tied with DMC) is *On Stranger Tides*
I love that one. There mermaid scene still gives me chills.
The 4th one isn't bad, definitely not my cup of tea, but it's still a pretty decent movie
However if you said that, Dead men tell no tales was your favorite-
That would've been a different story
Just was not as engaging or entertaining.
the finale of 3 tho? most epic shit ever back then
The first 2 are great. The third one is ok. The 4th and 5th ones are… forgotten
3rd was awesome
At World's End is the best one imo. It has the best climax ever.
The third is the best. A perfect movie, and has some the best action scenes EVER.
This also might be not the regular option but on stranger tides is my favorite of the 5 movies, but the trilogy as a whole is very special to me
i dont think it got progressively worse. the original 3 are amazing, by themselves and together. 4 isnt bad, but it isnt as good, so i guess its "worse" by technicality. 5 id say is bad, but that doesnt really prove the rule of it getting "progressively worse."
Disagree with the Dead Man’s chest and World’s end, those movies were amazing!
There's no Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp. He deserves a comeback.
Not sure why no one else is pointing this out...he won that case btw
@@maurolorenzotongco5521 Sure, but the damage is already done. And Disney did help Amber did most of the damage on Depp's reputation.
Which is why He is never going to work with the parasite named Disney.
Unless, of course, Disney fulfilled His request on getting 1 million Llamas.
@@maurolorenzotongco5521 isn't this general knowledge yet?
@@a4andrei I wish it was. Alas, we must chuck "General Knowledge" in with his buddy "Common Sense" in the waste basket 🥲
Will always love those movies. Was really into Pirates online as well
2:57 2 and 3 feel undercooked and not well written? These movies had character arcs, and an actual story to tell. Imagine if it had nothing with no direction at all! Cough cough 4/5
Dead man’s chest and At worlds end. ☠️
Dam I didn't know I was born the same year the first movie came out.
The first three films will always mean so much to me! They're masterpieces with masterful scores🏴☠️
He might return
Yeah, and didn’t those accusations end up being false as well? That’s what I heard.
Pirates Of The Caribbean is one my favorite film Franchises I love the characters , villains, action. But it should have been a Trilogy instead
Dead Man's Chest absolutely expanded the world. Idk how you can say it didn't
I vehemently disagree with you. The first three movies are fantastic. Had a great time watching them back then as a teen and can still enjoy them to this day. It all went to hell after At Worlds End though. Apples and Oranges I guess.
What also didn't help was once Disney acquired Marvel Studios and LucasFilms it was clear what they were going to prioritize....
idk if downfall is the right term
because as you said financially the movies did amazingly well
and the pirates franchise is open wide to original stories
i would enjoy seeing another movie and i think a lot of other people as well
Nopw. I lost interest after the second movie.
From what I felt watching pirates 5, it seems Disney is shifting the spotlight away from Jack even before the Amber Heard thing happened, and to be honest I'm kinda ok with that if pirates 6 can finish Jack's story line properly.
Horrible take saying dead man’s chest feels undercooked, it’s a damn near perfect sequel in so many regards
My ranks on pirates of the carribean from best to worst:
1: Pirates Of The Caribbean Curse Of The Black Pearl
2: Pirates Of The Caribbean At World’s End
3: Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest
4: Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales
5: Pirates Of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides
I think Dead Mans Chest is decent. Colourful. Davy Jones is the bomb.
At Worlds End… is a tough watch tbh. Very grey. Dialogue is messy.
On Stranger Tides WASTED the fountain of youth idea.

Dip in quality? Dead Man’s Chest has to be one of the best movies ever created
Dead Man's Chest's gotta lotta good stuff in it. I really like Davy Jones; phenomenal villain who is clearly the hero of his own story.
Pirates was my childhood, yo!
Same here, man
The first 2 sequals are legendary. The ones after are more " Meh", but they are still good movies with great storytelling.
Dude smoked a fat one before doing this video thinking the 2nd and 3rd film were bad
They just kept on making films, thinking that they would still be brilliant and classic when that’s not the case at all.
The character arcs were better?? In the first movie?! 3:05
would definitely choose Elizabeth in both 2/3 Then herself in the first movie.
I’m so happy people are defending dead man’s chest And At the world’s end. ☠️☠️☠️
Dead Mans Chest and at worlds end are not drops in quality. The drops happened with the 4th and 5th. I still enjoy the 4th and 5th but they are worse
I love the original trilogy and very much like parts 4,5 as well, don’t get the hate for them. Maybe the are not as high quality but they are very fun and the escaping scene in the beginning of the 4th movie is one of my favorites!
“So tell me, what’s become of my ship?”
I wish I had seen Deadman’s Chest in theaters, I hear people went wild for that scene, and given Barbossa is my favorite character, I would have probably joined in the cheering.
The downfall happened with pirates 4 and 5. Everybody loved Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest when it came out.
This film franchise was my childhood ❤️
I think the protagonists should be people who are not as familiar with the mythos.
nerdstalgic hasn't been himself for quite a while.
I'm out.
Pretty sure exactly 0 people said they dont wana see johnny as jack
I think you completely got it wrong, the trilogy is near perfect, The pirates of the carabbean fell off after that
I love these videos man
I don't remember the movie well enough to have an opinion on it, but the On Stranger Tides book is awesome
The first 3 are awesome, they are well setup and the journey was beautiful. The 4th was okay, the 5th was meh to me but it's alright tbh.
If Johnny Depp returns for Pirates 6 is gonna gross a billion dollars
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was just as good, If not better, than the first one. The other ones after it were not as good, but the first two were masterpieces
The original trilogy is the best, I don't think anything they did was a mistake (probably the whole Davy Jones locker was but that's it). The world building and how they wrapped up every character storyline was perfect.
Pirates 5 was good imo. It tied up several plot points finally and got me intrigued at the end tease of Davy jones
I never saw the value in curse of the Black Pearl. To me I couldn’t love it, for the reasons people loved it. It’s still a very fun movie it’s just not as complex or deep as 2 or 3. 🫢
I would choose this development OVER his identity in the first movie. Who just wants to Save the girl he likes since he was seven. 🤣
There’s nothing wrong in the first movie it’s just too simple for my taste!
One of the best movie franchises EVER! I love the sequals through. They have their charms.
