Oh dear, it's Shark Tale. What a fever dream of a movie, literally! I used to watch this movie to go to sleep, and it has had some interesting effects on my brain. But having not seen it in about 20 years, now is the time to go back to it and maybe understand just what it was that made this movie seem so weird. Perhaps we'll learn a couple things along the way! Or it'll be a complete waste of our time. Let's get into the TERRIBLE Shark Tale...

... Oof. What a disaster of a movie. And yet, so ahead of it's time with a voice actor playing himself... and Jack Black!
The most subtle thing about their cursed character design that I only noticed now: that they all mostly look like their irl counterparts, especially Will, Marty and Bob
Bob? You mean Ziggy?
@@grantmortensonva possibly Bobby DeNiro
@@luffyduffy7817 I thought he meant Bob Marley. Who was dead long before this movie was made. Ziggy Marley and Doug E. Doug are the jellyfish (do they even have names??)
How did you only just notice that?
bruh that was the first thing i noticed and reason i never watched 😂 that angelina jolie fish is nasty
every time I see this movie I feel like it slightly changes. like it secretly morphs without me knowing
Gaslight: the Movie
@@Esuerc YEAH EXACTLY ITS GASLIGHTING ME. WHAT CAN I EVEN TRUST ANYMORE
Every copy of Shark Tale is personalized
Exactly the same here.
Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
This is such an ironically enjoyable movie.

Debateable
It's a *so bad it's good*
True
YES! Like here in Brazil this movie is so popular sksksk
"Can anyone really properly Know this movie?"
Schaffrillas Productions: Allow me to introduce myself.
Love him
And there it is😊
Lol the better critic. Is it me or is this channel kinda just a ripoff of Schraffrillas?
@@iluridx this channel existed for a long time ago and he was the pikmin king, but Dazz sadly let go of pikmin cause these videos were doing better, and even made a whole send off, but then Pikmin 4 was announced and nature started to heal
@@Nic_2751 Maybe when schaffrillas makes his Pikmin 4 review or analysis video he should do it in a collab with Dazz........
The Jaws reference isn’t an issue since Spielberg founded Dreamworks, and Universal now owns it.
This is the movie that taught me what “nostalgia-blindness” was.
Same tho, I remember loving this movie when I was younger, and I still like it today, but hate it at the same time lol
@@dat_coolpickleOG thenn again, YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL THAT THIS MOVIE EXISTS, because visually they manage to do the cgi caricature right compared to the direction of WB remake of MR LIMPET

@@dat_coolpickleOG they WERE trying, but thankfully didnt happen after disastress pre artwork testing results withy jim carrey face when trying to mocap, just search jim carrey limpet and you shall be surprisingly freaked out by getting back to SharkTale "artistic accomplishment" if you know what i mean
@@scoutart1508 OMG I just looked it up and THAT, was pure nightmare fuel
I know so many people hated this movie, but I legitimately loved it. And now it’s just a nostalgic movie that I hold in my heart. (Also, I had no idea Jack Black was the shark lol. I did know Will Smith was Oscar tho).
Funnily enough, I remember the jelly fish most; them and the woman fish lol
But don’t get me wrong… it’s not the best movie, I just like it😂
same i even bought it on dvd its one of those soo bad its good movies
Honestly, it doesn't matter if a movie is good or bad, what matters is having a fun time.
@@onemoreweirdo207 true and its a fun bad movie
Yea, me and my mother always watched this movie... We enjoyed it alot
I still like this movie more than Finding Nemo lol
I always enjoyed the dialogue amongst the shark mob and with Don especially. something abt those conversations felt a lot more realistic than the rest of the movie
Well when you have De Niro and Scorceses you just copy some dialogue from their previous works and get them to add fish puns. There you go, instant good mafia
The Sushi Joke was top tier of the entire movie
It doesn't make sense. If no one went to the sushi shop then no one would to to "Fish King" either, as after all they are made of "fish burgers".
@@dagainz6997 you’d hate SpongeBob

@@Sentanette they eat meat from other fish
@@honeyriohunia7368 oh, you mean the chum bucket, I forgot, lol
Dreamworks sometimes has some weird textures in their films, look at characters in Shrek, Monsters vs Aliens, Over the Hedge and more.
But I kind of admire them for going against the too pretty Disney & Pixar styles.
But in this film it just doesn't work at all, looks horrendous.
In the best way possible.
I first read this as "shrek vs aliens" and now i really wanna see that
I knew it was only a matter of time before you got to this beautiful dumpster fire. The movie that somehow got nominated for Best Animated Feature, and made Will Smith quit voice acting for 15 years. And yet, I can't help but love it, because of how bad it is.
Same dude💀
Did he quit voice acting or did no one contact him?
The Polar Express should have been nominated instead since it came out the same year
@@grantmortensonva I think it was his choice, though he eventually came back as Lance Sterling in _Spies in Disguise._
@@Queenfan-kh1bz Agreed. Either that, or _The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie._
I refuse to let anyone who didn’t grow up with me try to even attempt to tell me that this movie is anything less than the masterpiece it is.
This!!
I know right?? its so good,
It's so bad it's good
When I was little I said " Why is there no sequel to Shark Tale ? " As I grew up I realized " Yeah it's terrible it doesn't deserve one at all".
Maybe a remake or something, but totally not a sequel lol
@@moonclip9997 What does deserve a sequel is Megamind ? How is there a Boss Baby 2 when Megamind hasn't gotten its long awaited sequel ? Same with Monsters vs Aliens.
@@juliancaraveo5700AGREE! I'm scared that they might ruin megamind tho, like they did with Madagascar
@@moonclip9997 I mean the last movie ( the third movie) was good. Are you talking about the multiple Netflix series ? That I can agree with.
@@juliancaraveo5700 yeah
I love the fact that a YTP of this movie has a more compelling plot than the actual movie.
Almost every movie does
Sharp talk?
I’d say this movie falls under the so bad it’s good category
All criticisms aside, I would happily take Shark Tale over most other DreamWorks Movies nowadays. And by most Movies, I mean Boss Baby, Trolls, and their sequels.
I agree! Part of that for me might be due to nostalgia, since I remember when I used to watch this movie a lot when I was a kid, so I do agree with a lot of the complaints the movie received, I do have a bit of a soft spot for it. Plus it may or may not have made me want to see one of DreamWorks Animation’s future movies. (😉🐼)
I would gladly pick this over home or the boss baby movies, just the thought of the latter makes me want to vomit
Easily! Nah, dazz being too hard on this one, with all the terrible movies that's been reviewed, this one was solid, good jokes, lots of work on the background stuff, I honestly don't even mind all the product placement because it's supposed to be like, new York underwater, it's gunna be grimey and covered in consumerism. Good film, not best film, but still good. 🥰😅
Even Last Wish?
@@SirToaster9330That one's fine (although I have yet to finally watch it), but I'd definitely take it and Shark Tale over The Doom Syndicate.
Mannn this movie was mad deep and I think it went over your head. Taught me what a gold digger was, shows race / class struggle, and even had a shark “come out of the closet” to his dad.
My favorite scene in the move was when Oscar busted through the doors of Don Lino's mafia place and said "Its Oscaring time" and then Oscar'd the sharks out of existence. Then Oscar proceeds to say "This ain't just some ordinary tale, this is a Shark Tale". Truly one of the movies of all time
I loved this movie, cuz even as a kid I knew this was meant to be taken lightly.
1:23 Well this is the early Dreamworks era,so they replicate what make Shrek so popular. Pop Culture reference, lots and lots of Pop Culture reference.
It wasn’t just pop culture references it was also satire, like shrek was a satire on fairy tale Disney movies, this was supposed to be an attempt of mafia movies, Kung fu panda is satire on karate movies, Megamind is a satire on superhero movies, how to train your dragon is satire on dragon movies, that was the idea, it didn’t work here at all clearly but that was the era of dreamworks movies
@@miketrapper0464 Is clear who got the short end of the stick here considering how good the other films are (Bar Shrek 3)
@@N12015 well honestly out of all of the bad ones shark tale is a masterpiece of trash
Mussel Crowe! And Renee Zellweger who plays Angie on same movie at 2:16
@@miketrapper0464 I would argue that Kung Fu Panda was actually a love letter to kung fu, not a satire
I actually genuinely enjoy this movie, Jack Black playing Lenny was the biggest plot twist I had as a kid and honestly made me love Jack Black even more, and I've actually seen this movie SO many times
The only thing I was doing while watching this movie was constantly keeping a straight face through the entire thing.
13:38 my favorite part about this is that in the game Oscar actually fights a hammerhead shark here, it's not a chase like in other parts of the game, it's a legit fight, which means he isn't lying anymore about slaying sharks, which SHOULD completely change the story, but it doesn't
I was a babysitter when this movie was out on DVD initially, and the little boys I babysat always had to watch this movie. Every night. Every time. The littlest one, Kaleigh (who couldn't have been much older than 2), would just sit next to me on the couch and not make a sound like even he didn't know what he was looking at on the screen.
who names a boy kaleigh???
Shut it, why does that matter to you that's not even the point @@caramel_cares
I actually like the dingy, rusty, water-degraded look of the environments lol
Same! Like a real city, but underwater, so algae covered and rusty
Yeah, dazz acts as if this isnt literally just the fish ghetto.
@@caramel_cares i dont think he's acting as if anything, as a fellow white englishman it probably just didn't come to his mind that this is the fish ghetto, since we don't have an exact analogue for that here in our country and the culture is different.
We’re going back in time to the first shark tale to get fish off the menu
That’s right, we’re going back in time to the first shark tale to get fish off the menu…
Seal is a real world singer.
As in it's his stage name
His most recognisable song is probably "Kiss from a rose" used in one of the older batman movies
No no no, its much more deep than that. Her name is Angie AND she's an Angelfish
I remember liking this as a kid and likes it. I rewatched it and was like "dang how did I like this!."
I remember watching this movie a lot as a little kid.
I thought Schafrillas productions was the only person who hated this movie to where he liked it
Guess there’s more peeps out there
It's been so many years and i still can't get over that sushi joke, it's one of the things i remember clearly from this feverish movie other than that lady fish 😭
Same 💀
I used to love Shark Tale... then I tried to watch it recently.
I remember a movie called Everyone's Hero (2006) and all I can remember it was a talking baseball and Robin William was in that movie too and it really did felt like a fever dream
This movie is a masterpiece, and nothing can change my mind
Am I the only one who would find it incredibly hilarious if you just cut half the movie and make it about a fish gambling his girlfriends posessions away just to be thrown into a whale never to be seen again.
I always thought lenny was voiced by Adam Sandler so I learned something new today
The ending made me realize Shark Tale is just an animated, and arguably better, Fight Club
i feel like if you like bad-humor ironically then you'd love these type of movies but if you're the type of person who hates puns...
It is objectively terrible but it is irresistible in how greatly terrible it is! It's a classic!
It’s a perfect cinematic disaster
Until this breakdown of the movie, I never realized how much I remember wrong about how Shark Tale’s plot goes…
i actually liked Lenny. also i remember the song "she's dangerous, super bad, better watch out she'll take your cash"
This movie made me so uncomfortable as a kid; I only watched it once and never looked back
This movie is nowhere near the best I will definitely say that. And sure, the textures and models tend to look pretty weird, thing is though, this film was an absolute staple of my childhood. So I tend to ignore how much I don’t like the designs, and tend to just enjoy the fact that I saw this movie as a kid and that I will never forget it. Of course it is not the greatest watch in the world, Oscar is not a great character, and a lot of the references flew right over my head. But it is still a movie that I will watch over and over again just for the nostalgia.
Shark Tale uses the Bee movie effect, it's so bad it's good
That octopus...That thing gives me nightmares...
Damn, This movie was my childhood. The fond memories.
My shark plushy sitting next to me is offended by this movie
Will Smith fish gives me nightmares.
2:23 Seal was the artist who did Kiss from a Rose.
4:49 pretty sure it was intentional to make everything look "dingy". the movie is set in like an inner city area so it would make sense that everything isn't all shiny and pristine looking. The scratched up look n stuff aren't really there in the scenes at the penthouse he gets after being successful.
This movie aint a 10/10 or anything, but i've always thought it was a fun movie. I think you def had to click with the references to find a lot of enjoyment in it.
Finally, he covers my least favorite dreamworks movie!!
Can't bring myself to hate this movie. And the soundtrack slaps.
Also, aren't dolphins carnivores anyway? So why would Lenny trade his original identity as a carnivore for another? Even keeping in line with the overt messaging, it makes little sense. I mean, Lino's mob consists of sharks, an octopus, a lionfish (Lola), a marlin/swordfish, and orcas (which are DOLPHINS).
Remember this movie came out in the same year and the same studio as shrek 2
the fact Will smiths character is named oscar..
Watched this film I dunno how many times as a kid. Now as an adult, I find it low-key creepy
I remember seeing that scene of that old shark farting and then that other shark passing out after smelling it traumatized me and made me steer clear of being close to old people out of fear of them farting next to me and causing me to faint lol
🤣 what
This is the movie we all know Schaffrillas LOVES to HATE!🦈
3:28 “it’s will smith. In one of his most disturbing forms yet… *krill smith.“*
9:14 this is the first time I've realised that is meant to be like trunk of a car.
I love the addition of, I think Laurence’s? theme from Bloodborne! I only noticed it at around 2:50…. And instantly the characters became that much scarier to look at once I had Bloodborne in my mind. Haha!
Y'know, hidden in all the terrible jokes the one I personally find genuinely great is Oscar's "Oh c'mon I didn't just lie to you, I lied to everybody! 😃" line, it's just perfect
Lobsters are trains because they're cru-stations....
Oscar is the main villain of the movie. No cap
Know what this reminds me of? This old cartoon I saw when I was little. It was not for children, so most of it flew over my head. An anthropomorphic fish noir about some kind of private detective and...Tim Curry was there, but I don't remember if he was an octopus or a shark. I think he was a shark. A...a loan shark, even.
There was only like five or six episodes, and it was a weird (and strangely sexual) show, but I admit to really liking it.
Which is where this movie differs. Just as weird, but none of the quirky charm and fish-boobs.
XD this comment lol! So I looked it up, was it called Ink and pain by chance? I’m interested to know what movie this was! 😂
The lobsters are trains because in the real world, spiny lobsters line up and march to breeding grounds. They do this conga line to avoid predation.
I remember Shark Tale. I don't hate it. Is it good? Hell no. Do I find far too many of the "jokes" chuckle worthy? Yes.
Good point actually, the "bad guy" was the most likable character
I feel like when they decided to make this movie everyone in the production crew was high, as well as all the artists and the Director literally everyone 😂😂😂
I feel like you have to watch this movie while high too…I don’t even do drugs 💀
"Is being crass the point!?"
Y E S
I remember I watched this movie with my then boyfriend and I had a mental breakdown for like 10 minutes over "Fish King"
the animation did not bother me, the predictable story did not bother me but the main character is so insufferable that I was actively hoping he would get eaten by the sharks and the fact that he gets a happy ending while learning nothing made me hate this movie more than any of the other stuff.
Even when I was a kid I thought this movie was weird like the joke with the sushi shop makes no sense, is that fish a cannibal?
Always noticed it was a KNOCK OFF of finding Nemo lol somehow
I watched a full tik tok ad for you. The sacrifices I've made.
I’ll be the first to admit, this is one of those movies that I had a skewed impression of the general hatred of, since I really enjoyed it as a kid. It wasn’t until videos started popping up that I was like, “Oh. Huh. That is incredibly ugly.”
The whale wash scene still slaps tho.
As a kid/early teen in the early 2000s, I was convinced these new “computer cartoon movies” could do no wrong, winning both kids and adults over with films like Shrek, ice age, finding Nemo, Madagascar, etc. with their top-notch comedy. But while TV and classrooms were either playing Shrek or Ice Age (1), “Shark tale” (despite being a Dreamworks movie) was something I couldn’t properly see until I had to download it on my Zune HD many many years later (2010). I can see what the problem is, now....
every time i hear the clip ''what did I ever do to you?'' I hear schaffrillas going ''YOU EAT PEOPLE''
3:51 the sudden close up was too funny wtf
It was only a matter of time before the inevitable happend.
Keep in mind, this was the first computer animated film produced at Dreamworks' main campus in Glendale, CA without the help of the PDI studio which sadly shut down almost a decade ago. Shark Tale was a huge effort for the hand drawn crew to become CG animators under a 6 to 12 month training journey!!!
They couldn't think of a better pun for "Burger King" than "Fish King"? It's not even a pun. "Fish" doesn't sound anything like "Burger".
When people and Caddicarus started talking about this film, was when I noticed the cursed character models
Plot twist this movie is a masterpiece and we are too stupid to realize it.
i honestly kinda like the background work of this movie
Okay, I’m really mad that they went for “Fish King” rather than the more suitable “Burger Kingfish”
Your end chunk monologue is literally why I love you so much Dazz ❤
Nah that was Jack's reaction to the script they gave him😭 14.09
This movie was so awful that me and my brother snuck into the premiere of The Incredibles after it ended.
4:00 Fish aren’t meant to be vertical.
What about SpongeBob? The fish are mostly bipedal there and they look fine.
When I was younger, in summer camp, they played this movie. I was lucky enough to go home before it even started
Wait a tick, these jellyfish are touching/grabbing fish with their tentacles. Everyone knows that jellyfish are venomous and use their tentacles to kill their prey. How did these fish survive?
I read both your comments, this movie is definitely goofy 💀 lol
Will Smith's character in this is called Oscar, that must've predicted the future!
Imagine Will Smith fish slapping Chris Rock zebra. That would be entertainment at its finest
@@emoji3266 Somebody already did it, look: th-cam.com/video/TC1bGg7vK-c/w-d-xo.html
i will forever unapologetically love the grimy and dirty aesthetic of this movie, it's so dated by it in the best way possible, and it's such a stark comparison to todays clones of a clone characters in kids movies - if not the fish, at least the backgrounds man !!
this was my first introduction to “say hello to my little friend” as a kid
One of the most forgettable animation movies of all time! I was watching this with my friend and his dad and his dad fell asleep in the movie theater. This movie didn't create any nostalgia to remember later.
Ok. So the shark singing jaws caught me by surprise and made me laugh. I hate myself.
Shark Tale is a post 9/11 movie about a traumatized city that seeks redemption.
The two girls are so poorly written. One spends her time pining over a terrible guy that doesn't even like her and gets punished at the end by actually ending up with the guy that never noticed her and didn't really get better. And the other doesn't even need to be there. She's just there so they can do the whole girl next door that you don't love is good and the new flashy girl is bad because she is sparkly? They both should have just left to go do anything else. Maybe open a business with Lenny. He should have left too.
They played this movie way too many times at one of my schools for movie day, this movie and Cars.
shark tale is the result of fusing shrek & finding nemo into one abomination
If I had a nickel for every time DreamWorks made an animated movie with Jack Black as a black-and-white animal with green eyes, who's looked down by society on for what he is, but everyone loves and accepts him at the end, I'd have two nickels.
...Which isn't a lot but, it's weird it happened twice.
