A rule of thumb I was taught by my grandfather who was a master carpenter for nearly 40 years, "The last 10% is 90% of your clients expectations." It is so easy to see a project as complete when all the big stuff is done, but the final, small details are what the homeowner sees and remembers when telling others about their experience working with you.

It's justifiable though. You spend 250k+ you want to walk in and not see dry wall screws, a chip on a banister, a trim piece missing. Etc. Brand new homes should be impeccable. The only thing that should be skimped on is whatever the client buys. As.far as.labor goes, that should be high expectations.

Over-under is the only way for cables! You guys should consider getting velcro cable ties. They're re-usable and don't leave sticky spots on the cable like electrical tape does after a while. Great series, btw. I have really enjoyed every single episode. Looking forward to your next project!

    • @miguelruiz4613

This technique is called a "roadie wrap", because roadies on tour are constantly wrapping cables. The main benefit besides being easier on the cables is that you can unwrap the cables without them getting tangled. If you did it correctly you should be able to hold one end, toss the cable, and have it unravel all by itself.

A suggestion on the door under the steps they where installing ; use a touch latch when you push on the door it pops open then you don't need a knob. On the table saw I build a two feet by four feet outfeed table; that way when you rip a board it is supported an does not fall off the end of the table saw; which is much safer.

I enjoyed watching the videos from start to finish of this project. It’s just a pity that we find it hard building houses made of wood here in our place in the Philippines. The reason for that is that our place is the gateway of typhoons that come many times in a year which gives us enough reason to build our houses strong enough to withstand the typhoons. Because of these typhoons, we use concrete for our homes. The other thing is that even though we are in an island, we don’t have enough wood available to be used in building our houses. As a guy inclined to construction, I’ve learned many things from these videos. Thanks and keep up the good works.

Good thing that I wasn't around Jamie. I would have parked a truck in front of that little door !!!
At least until after lunch !!!

Eric, Jamie, Arlo, Jason, John, Ray thanks very much I stayed for the entire build, very entertaining and informative. Early on in the build Eric you made a golden comment about doing a calc to find out the weight of a gallon of water. Had me in hysterics, in NZ we got the metric system. 1 liter 1 kilogram...haha

I have two Bosch table saws and yes when they are used a lot the raising and lowering sticks. Just take out the plate and give the guides inside a little squirt of wd40 and it will work like new again. I have to do it every so often or when you start to feel it getting stiff again.

I was shown the Over/ Under coiling of cables in 1972, when at College in England, by one of the Roadies with George Thorogood and the Destroyers, and been using it ever since!

The over / under technique Jamie demonstrated, we used it in the ambulance for our defibrillator. Couldn’t risk tangled cables when someone’s heart stops. 👍🏻

I use to run 100 yards of coaxial. If you use your left hand with your palm facing up, place the start/ end cable out like your thumb, you'll never let go of the cable with the right hand and you could "over-under" all day.
