Holy shit, an actual therapist is reacting to the most emotional and therapeutic anime of all time?? This is gonna be great. Everything about Violet Evergarden just feels so personal and moving and beautiful, I honestly can still get teary-eyed at certain scenes due to the stunning animation alone, but the way the plot is actually _about_ feeling/processing emotions (they’re not an afterthought or a consequence, rather a consistent goal) is just… very unique, and I really haven’t seen anything else like it. Even the post-war setting is rare to see, but it’s perfect for the story the anime is trying to tell. I feel like you’re going to talk for ages each episode and I am so here for it 😂
Vinland Saga is another one I put on the same level of Violet Evergarden. It doesn't really dive into matters of the soul until season 2 so season 1 is more of a prologue but the emotional content in season 2 is incredible.
@@pieterlindeque7798 I can only speak for the manga: Vinland Saga is very good and I liked the part when he gets older but for me it't not that emotional deep like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation or Silent Voice
Evan Call, the composer, wrote a lot of the music based on his interpretation of the original light novel, including the main theme. One of the reasons I think the music enables the series to hit as hard as it does.
The trademark of Kyoto Animation is they mostly convey or express emotion thru body animations rather than facial expressions. 💯 But they still nail the facial expressions tho, it's just that their body animations are their main focus.
One of the few animes that managed to touch my heart. I am so excited to see your thoughs about the next episodes. The whole sentence about the flame and how that fire represents her rather troubled self.
There's a very interesting video about this series you might like to watch when you eventually finish the series, called "A Veterans Reaction to Violet Evergarden" by Animarchy History. It's more of a long-form interview and retrospective than it is a reaction, but it sort of says what it's about on the tin. It's just a video that offers a very particular perspective on the show and Violet's character that I really appreciated getting when I watched it.
Oh this is going to be a fun ride. Gonna have to add a new BINGO square on Brady breaking down in ugly tears. The EN dub of this show is fantastic as well, but it doesn't have Yui Ishikawa voicing Violet - she's in my Mount Rushmore of JP female VAs (alongside Aoi Yuki, Rie Takahashi, and Miyuki Sawashiro).
Ive watched all of violet evergarden, and he’s barely into the episode rn and its crazy how much he knows right off the bat that is all true about the story. I just think it is so cool and admirable that he can make quick and precise conclusions so accurately about these things with such limited information
Thanks for starting this series! Another series I enjoyed, definitely enhanced by the visuals and soundtrack. Those of us who have watched it, well, we know what episode we're waiting for!
Kyoto Animation are masters at conveying emotions and I would recommend the majority of their anime, Clannad After Story being my favorite anime of all time
You absolute mad lad Bochi the Rock 86 now Violet Evergarden. Well, I look forward to seeing what's left at the end. Everything you’ve made so far has been top-tier. Given what you like to watch I would suggest Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) as a future venture.
Violet's use of her mouth always struck me on a couple levels. Your mouth is your third manipulator, animals especially use their mouths for more dexterous work so it lends her a very practical or almost feral quality. Your lips are also very sensitive to touch and temperature, so there's a closeness associated with them over your hands.
I've always assumed that her prosthetics offer only limited sensations, at best. Meaning she doesn't get the physical closeness we do from holding/touching.
1:17:00 I see it as Sympathy- I work to understand your emotions. Empathy- I seek to experience your emotions. As an empath who had a seriously rough time as a tennager and then young adult, having to actively differentiate my feelings from the feelings of those around me, I had to contemplate deeply and at length to understand that I experience communal emotions different from my peers.
Watching this right after your breakdown of 88 Eighty-Six ep 7. These episoded are very similar when it comes to reconsilomg the difference between a finite game amd an infinite one. Lena was seeing the 86 as being in an infinite game where the 86 knew it was otherwise. And here, Violet has spent her entire life in a finite game, amd now she has been thrust into an infinite game, due to the war ending.
Very fun that youre enjoying Violet Evergarden and Frieren! I have silver hair as well which is neat. I've had it for years and cant go back to the other colors i've had, I love it too much! I've also been binging your Dico Elysium content, one of my favorite games, with some of the best writing and voice acting I've experienced. I would love to see you do videos on other subjects too, like schemas and core beliefs etc, many things really! I, too, love robotic arms/hands and, would you know it, jaws! ha! Thank you for your lovely content, Euro Brady If i may suggest the game Mouthwashing! its not a long game, perfectly paced. ^~^ you may never see this but I just wanted to throw this into the world. {A Mousey stranger with DID}
Violet Evergarden is the only anime i have watched, which made me shed tears EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE! 😭 That's why this show took its rightful place in my Top 10!
I just want to point out that Violet's prosthetics are not robotic, but mechanical. And those kinds of prosthetics did exist during the WWI era and were developed for the purpose of returning soldiers to get "their missing limbs back". Also, when Violet bit the Major. I saw it as her only way to pull him away from danger, because at that point and time she already lost both arms, hence why it shows a small severed arm fall to the ground and blood coming from her torn sleeves.
33:25 WAIT im so dumb ive watched this show so many times and that makes so much sense! Of course she rubs it on her face! She cant feel with her hands 😭 1:17:28 hey i feel like i was kindof right! My guess was that sympathy is more of giving an olive branch of emotion, while empathy is more of an internalization and understanding of someone else’s emotional experiences. A response as a result of someone’s emotions vs experiencing them in the present with them respectively.
Oh....the cry show......Seriously though it is one of the best shows I've seen. I feel like when you watch a show that is outside your wheel house and love it, it's something special. Also had a pretty good dub in my opinion. I do guess anime likes that idea of a kid that pretty much grew up without anything or with a family unit so off kilter with the rest of society they are emotionally stunted in some way. IBO, Appleseed, and Berserk come to mind. When he said your burning, you just don't know it yet, that really ways the line for me. Probably not the most emotionally impactful line in the show because this show loves trying to beat the audience to death with the emotion bat, but it's so pivotal to her character in this early stage of the show. Man though I didn't know about the fire. Sucks that the people that worked on this are no more. I guess it's small comfort, but at least this is a complete work, so they got to finish what they are doing. Just as an artist myself I would hate to have something half do when I go. Or have a Kentaro Miura situation with Berserk. btw, if you had a Gundam show where the Gundam's emote with their hands, will we get GUNDAM HANDS or GUNHANDS?

And as far as production goes - this would be KyoAni's "masterpiece of masterpieces".
dam onion ninjas. There's so much emotion coming though with just the dialogue, and we don't even have the music to hijack our brains.
I am quite impressed when Violet immediately returns to the serviceman when she gets a postman uniform. Yes, it is uniform, after all.

Thank god you are already uploading this here. I was scared the Twitch VOD will be lost when I have free time. Which is this Saturday...

Land of the Lustrous is actually pretty high on my list! I already listen to the soundtrack haha. I think I will love the series.
That's fantastic and I'm looking forward to the next episode of Violet in a month or so. 😛 @@eurobrady

Such a small addition with such a huge amount of meaning.

That is a great comparison, and totally informs how Violet is having to adjust to the idea that she has to decide what is meaningful about life now.
