You can tell how much work nintendo puts into mario's physics. Literally every mario fangame I've ever played, the physics feel too slow, too fast, or just janky in general.

I know it's kinda cheating, but you could also just import LibSM64 to get Mario's physics exactly like the OG game. The challenge then is to get the library to understand unity's collision system so that Mario reliably walks into walls, lands on the floor, and can stomp..........KOOPAS....in your Unity fan-made game. (Yes that was a Mario movie reference)
Not necessarily a tutorial; but the way I did it was by setting up a simple variable; say "redCoinCount". Then every time I touch the red coin, it adds 1 to the variable, plays a sound, and deletes it. Then once the variable reaches 7, it spawns a star and sets the variable back to 0. Hope this helps!
the rotating linear planar pngs/textures are still surprisingly widely used today, especially in games where there's no rotating camera
