I can just imagine the awesome scenes and plots that involve a Brass NPC. From it networking at a local gathering spot to help kick out a more powerful Chromatic Dragon. To something more comical involving a stranger, that most keep talking with you! lol 😂
A "smell of hot oiled metal" is so broad and ambiguous, each brass can smell legitimately unique. Which fits brass dragons well. They can literally make their own perfumes, colognes, soaps, et cetera.
The party enters a town in a desert. They see a bubly woman talking to a vendor. The woman notices the party and tries to spark a conversation. The woman manages to catch the attention of the arcane trickster after casting a charm spell on him. Party fails to realize that their rogue is missing, until the cleric discovers that her friend is missing thus forcing the party to go on a job. The party has no idea that the woman is a brass dragon. They just believe she's an overly social sorceress who's sending them on a quest. After completing the quest the Barbarian and Rogue(Arcane Trickster) start falling in love with her and the Barbarian is apparently the most charasmatic and just as talkative as the brass dragon.

I've almost gone through the entire channels catalog already. 2 months ago I dm'd my first 5e campagin with some Internet friends. Last time I touched DnD was 10 years ago with 4e. this channel has been so helpful for me to get into the game again. Now when my PC's roll checks on history, monsters, ect I always have an answer. Thank you
My opinion on the scales getting more colorful and bright as they age is that they are becoming "more" of their style dragon. Since age means everything to power levels of dragons. The brighter the scales the more dangerous the dragon. Sort of like yellow and bright red being a warning on creatures in nature.

I'm booting up a new game in 2 weeks and I'm borrowing your ideas of several different forms of coinage. The human gold pieces, the elven electrum(the only currency accepted in their society. 8gp=1Ep) and dwarven marks(the highest valued coinage due to the stability of the dwarven societies and lack of inflation.22gp=1Dm)

The brighter the scales the more dangerous the dragon. Sort of like yellow and bright red being a warning on creatures in nature.
Having a dimmer color as young also makes sense by evolutionary reasons, as it helps you stay hidden in that vulnerable part of life.
@JamJestKesh also wyrmling and young dragons wouldn't really be mating, so maybe it's an attraction thing for them?
