Excellent idea! There is no such thing as going overboard when it comes to protecting your citrus. 😅 I use the plant jackets & incandescent christmas lights. I throw a tarp over that for extra insulation as needed. This is my first year putting citrus in ground (Owari Satsuma Mandarin Orange & Meiwa kumquat) in zone 8. They have done well for several years in pots so I wanted to see how they do in ground. I also put a remote temp sensor on a couple of the in ground trees so I can monitor how effective the frost protection methods work & make adjustments as needed. I may try out your method too. Thanks for the tips.
This protection methods is approved by Canadian 🇨🇦 who knows cold 🤣 The only thing I would add, close the air gap near the ground with few inches of soil or even leaves. Might not be needed for one night cold temp, but it will make a difference if the cold snap is for few days.
Good idea
