PS I am sick of variegation for its own sake. let's love some lush, bright solid green leaves again!
Agreed
Heck yessssssss!!! 100% agree..
Give me a beautiful green leaf any day of the week!
Agreed! Variegation is so overrated!
Agree! Give me a nice full plant over a scraggly variegated one any day!
I'm a big African Violet person. Pop them into a self-watering pot and forget about them for weeks on end. If you fertilize constantly (with liquid in the water) they'll bloom basically year-round. Mine have gone through months of neglect and bounced back beautifully. Mine live in a cabinet with plants with thrips and they just don't care!! They're a perfect low maintenance flowering plant that is generally impossible to kill in the self-watering set-up. They're also super cheap in the grocery store!! ♥
I steered away from African violets, so thank you. I think I'll try your idea out.
Killed every one my hubby got me, Tx is far too dry for them outside a terrarium.
I am a Bonsai enthusiast and have s few great trees. I just bought a Italian Stone Pine and when I got it home the soil was power dry so I soaked it for a few hours. I called the place I bought it from and asked them to water what was left in their store. I have my grandmothers Christmas cactus from the 70's and I take real good care of this ancient relic from my youth. Good video, most people see a plant and buy it without knowing too much about it. Let your video be a guide!
I do alright with Calathea/prayer plants (they keep changing the genus names on these). The secret is aquarium water conditioner to get rid of the chlorine in water and regular watering... preferably in a self-watering type planter.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing.
Yes! API tap water conditioner!! I don’t even want to drink my tap water! I start with using a Brita filter to fill a 1 gallon bottle & add 4 to 5 drops of conditioner. I have had my calathea for 11 months and it has almost doubled in size and just keeps sprouting new leaves! I have snipped only about 5 leaves from the bottom over the time it came home, but that seems normal. It also sits on a glass bowl filled with pebbles & water for added humidity. I love mine so much that I gave one to my neighbor at Christmas. Her’s flowered this summer…. I’m a little envious! 😊
Rain water works really well, too!
Great clip. New to all of this…. Struggling but worth it.. thank you!
I knew someone who collected episcia. She kept each one under a glass dome to hold in humidity.
Yes, this was very helpful indeed. I'm good with plants and can figure out most of them (eventually) but your video is a great reminder of plants we SHOULDN'T get as a present for someone who's less experienced, or even for ourselves if we're buying for tricky spots like an office building that turns the lights and AC/heating off during weekends.
A plant that has died in my care more times than I wish to admit: Stingray Alocasia. Oh, how I love those leaves! No matter what I do, it eventually succumbs to rot or spider mites.
We love our Hoyas. A very robust plant, easy care too. We have gotten mealy bugs a couple times on ours. We caught it in time and got rid of the issue.
Ashley: What are my credentials? Well I don't have any
Me: Subbed😂😂
Great video and great selection at your Home Depot. Lowe's has the better selection where I live.
I have found that Alocasia need lots of humidity. The only one that I have that thrives is the one in my walk in shower.
Excellent information! My favorite is the Chinese Evergreen. I've also had success with spider plants, but not with money plants (root rot).
I'm sorry Ashley had mites and other issues with Alocasia and Calathea. I do find them not that difficult, if you are willing to do my setup. Explained in my video.
I'm impressed with the variety that you have to choose from at this Home Depot. Here in Omaha, we don't have anything like this.
Same over here. Her home depot is gorgeous.
Thanks for sharing your experience with these plants, I love all of them. Unfortunately, all of them don’t love me and don’t want me to be their mommy. I seen a plant in the Home Depot that you did not mention. I was hoping you could tell me the name and any information on it. It was when you were speaking about it is at 8:40 ish right before you talk about the peace lily. I saw a very white fairly large leaf plant that I want to see if it wants to live with me. Please let me know if you can. Thanks so much for your wonderful videos!❤
Thanks for this. I gave up on trying different types of Crassula because they are very prone to Mealy Bugs in my situation.
I have my cebu blue in a self watering pot and it is thriving. I did have one in a regular pot and it died. I tend to underwater and I think they may be a thirsty plant.
I appreciated your opinion. Thanks for the info.
Very informative video! You are right on with alot of your comments on levels of care required.
Although I love ivy plants, spider mite magnets.
After making errors with all the plants you mentioned, I tend to stick with the easier ones, pothos, hoyas, jade, snake plants and hawthoria.
I love and adore Maranta aka Prayer Plants. They seem to attract thrips. Ours did anyhow. Maybe it's where we live and our climate.
Awesome video!! I love jade and scindapsis. Definitely a fan of systemic pest treatment for all of my indoor plant babies❤
Thank you for this, I found it very interesting. I'm basically a neophite (after years with only jade plants, Easter cacti, and hawortha.) I made some notes! Oh, yea, nobody ever mentions streptocarpus, a wonderful little plant with continuous lovely and cheerful flowers, closely related to the African violet.
Agree with all you said from my experience over years buying plants , and how many problems I had with plants you mention as problematic.
I bought two cane yuccas at Lowe's a few years ago that I planted in one pot and I love them. The original two have grown too big to move outside anymore so are not doing great but have given rise to two stem cuttings and a top cutting that are doing great. Probably time to cut back the original two again.
Ficus Macleylandi, or banana leaf ficus, is a very underused ficus that doesn’t drop leaves like benjamina!
Philodendron brasil are slow growers but i combine them in pots with my pothos.
I have never had any issues with pests except off and on with fungus gnats I do allow spiders to roam through my plants ( I have about 150 plants ) I have a humidifier on for my tropical s because I live in a dry environment I also have orchids and cacti ,and carnivorous plants as well as succulents I think many of the plants you mentioned (like ivy ) need a very wet and cold environment The worse plants (And I have killed many) are spider plants and ferns (any kind) I have never had luck with them I also use distilled water on some of my plants as we have high mineral content in our water I think especially for calathea's Great video (:
I bet the spiders eat the pests they find on your plants, preventing an infestation! That’s great!
Thank you for this, cheers!🎉❤
I stay away from gardenia (although I love this plant) impossible to grow indoors, especially during the winter, in my opinion
Definitely an outdoor plant. My grandmothers favorite flower. 🌸
@@LifewithAshleyAnitaoh I’d try it with a strong grow light
I'd be cautious with syngoniums, they can attract thrips. I have one and every so often I find thrips on mine. Just a FYI.
I can't get enough Pothos or syngonium. I gave away a calathea rosie on it's death bed but continue to struggle with a rattlesnake. I will not buy any more calathea. But my red maranta and I are BFF's as long as I don't move her. Ashley, I recommend you try a peperomia happy beans. Mine went from a 6 inch stick to a 12 inch branching tree in a year and I have propped it twice. I'd call it a funnn plant!
Where can I find one of those?
❤❤❤I love lucky bamboo plants, succulents and philodendrons, because they are easier for my busy schedule to care for❤️❤️❤️
Great video. I would say ivy are pretty much more of an outdoor plant. I have tried them indoors and no luck. Outside, especially in the uk were it always cold and wet, they grow crazy and pest free.
Thanks for sharing!
Use mosquito bits in your watering can and they will kill off the fungus gnats!
They grow like weed and also seed crazily. Bunch of seedlings pops out of nowhere 😂
Great clip. thank you for sharing your thoughts n experiences so i won’t buy them to waste 😂😢
You started out with my absolute favourite: ivy. there are so many different kinds and they are all so beautiful. I just love how delicate they look. Unfortunately, I could never get them through the winter. No matter what I tried they never made it. The spider mites are such a pain to get rid off. The only place where ivy might stand a chance is probably in a bathroom where they might get enough humidity. Now I keep some on my balcony instead and I got a beautiful pothos for my living room... and after watching this video I really want a scindapsus. They are stunning and they're easy to take care of? I hope I'll be able to find one at some point
I love my ivy's, I love, love, love them! I have only had spider mites 1 time over the past 8 years. Crossing fingers for none for the next 8 and beyond.
Oh my gosh, those tradescantia nanook. I love them so much but REALLY struggle to limp them through winter until I can kick it out in the spring again. They need SO. MUCH. water. Self watering pots help but they do not like low humidity.
This was a great idea for a video! Very helpful for people to know what are the best plants to buy, especially if someone is new to plants and wants to avoid the drama!
I hope it’s helpful!
Ferns- Asparagus ferns are pretty tolerant. They do react to drought but it is simply a matter of clipping off the yellow and it will get back on track easily. They seem delicate but aren't. In my experience. Alocasias- dust regularly and pests can be kept at bay. Bonus is harvesting corms and making new plants, which is great if mother plant is pesty.
I love African violets but these ceramic pot for them are very expensive. Just bought a beautiful pink/purple one on Etsy but it was 31.00. So I need to go good will shopping and see if I can find one or garage sales next year.
You can make your own ,a clay pot without a hole set inside another pot put water in the outside pot plant your orchid in the inside pot careful of what you sit it on it will make a water ring
I just pitched all four of my English Ivy varieties yesterday. Despite treating them all summer for mites, and thinking I had eradicated them, there they were.... Just not worth the hassle. I do have alocasias and calatheas and P. Gloriosum that the spider mites love, but the leaves are larger and fewer so it's easier to catch and treat them on those.
I struggle with Rex begonias (some of them). I managed to get some thrips from a big box store and they found my African Violet pollen irresistable, so I've gone through a lot of misery spraying them and disbudding them. Hope I got them all! Anyway, this was a fun diversion (what NOT to buy)! Thanks
As a new collector, thank you for a practical and honest view of the plants. I love alocasia, but I will hold off until I have a dedicated place for them, like an enclosed cabinet.
I’m growing alocasia fine in a low humidity bedroom. They just need light and heat for the easier varieties. They won’t keep AS many leaves without over 50% humidity but my melo just popped a 4th leaf out.
It is definitely easier to start with plants that are more forgiving and then work your way up to alocasias!
My cat LOVES spider plants! Now I know why!!! I appreciate your honesty. This makes me feel less bad as a grower. 🌸
Fun and great ideas!! 💚🌱🪴
Thank you Ashley. I just stumbled across this channel, and you seem very informative. I look forward to seeing more of your content.
My plant i avoid are those small green leaved bonsai looking plants with the little whites flowers. They are nice until they explode with pests. Had one cause damage to a third of my little forest 😢 I'm still on the offense
Spider mites like heat and stagnant air. If you can keep air moving around a plant, it will not get spider mites, in my experience. Bird's nest fern attracts mealy bugs like crazy. They often come pre-loaded with mealy from the big box store!
*Favorites are:* spider plant (Chlorophytum), pothos, diffenbachia, and peace lily because they are carefree and forgiving.
*Stay away from:* money plant, peperomia, succulents, and cacti because I can't get them to thrive (they slowly die).
*Trying new this year:* syngonium and aglaonema.
Thx for sharing!
I’m a Hoya head and also dischidia fan. I do have many of the plants you mentioned. No more Calathias
wondered at the cost of the Bili? for me mealy bug and aphids are much more of a problem - i think if the environment is higher humidity there is less problem with spider mites and more with these ones :)
I struggle with cebu blue too. I bring one home and it seems to start falling apart and melting. Kinda reminds me of a calathea 🤔 but this time I took cuttings and rooted them in a dome pot. Now they are in one of my little self watering pots. They have definitely got some roots. So maybe I'm about to be successful with it. 😊 another plant i don't want again is the "ginger" plant and some shops call it a calathea. That has to be the most difficult plant ever. The only peperomia I've ever found that actually wants to live is the Beetle. It is so cute and is not a diva 😊
Peperomia Beetle is a great plant! They are so cute!
I had collected bonsai for a few years.. since i found this channel i think i have about 25 houseplants now.. 😮😂
That’s awesome! 😎
I stayed away from hoyas ..bug magnet..love aglaonema and pothos..❤
Aglaonemas are the BEST!
Very helpful info Ashley! Thanks. I agree with you on several "stay away from" plants. I actually do really well with many of the ficus varieties, Fiddle leaf figs, cyathistipula (African fig) Bambino, benjamina, benjamina variegated, but I really struggle with Teneke, rubber tree?? Duh!!❤😂
It's funny how some plants just won't thrive for us!
Same like you for some reason I struggle with cebu blue I luv this plant but I guess I haven’t figured it out. Also ferns struggle with those. Great video, Tfs. 💚
It seems like those plants just like to be difficult! 😄
Regarding the Agelonema plants, do you notice how they're potted from the grower in those cylinders in the soil? Do you remove those or no and what kind of soil would you repot them in? We find that certain plants with those cylinders in the soil seem to hold the plant back from its true growth potential. Almost like they're strangling the roots. Any suggestions you can offer.
I don’t have luck with Rubber Plants. Never again would I buy one. Great plants ideas video. Thank you! 😢
Wax ivy is a great alternative to regular ivy! It’s more succulent and easy to take care of
Wax ivy is such a cool plant
My theory on why certain plants are more spider mite prone. Is for example alocasia in the wild live in wet humid environments, basically not conditions where spider mites would live. Because of that they have never evolved over 1000s of years to deal with spider mites (if that makes sence)
I think in 1000 years time if people are still growing Alocasia in a home environment, (from many generations of corm from other home growns, not wild) then they would evolve more anti spider mite.
Just an idea I come up with over the years.
Crotons just want a wash once a week under the sink and morning sun, they flower so easily for me
Keep checking lows they always put plants in that black mark down section where you see full health plants getting 50% off
My croton loves life, from a big box store, she's massive I don't know why people have trouble with it.
I love a croton, but I've washed it down so many times to rid it of spidermites. They just won't die 😢
@Perivale I've got hundreds of tropical and indoor plants I grow everything from scratch and they aclimate to your conditions much better, spider mite is a never ending dance you will never be truly rid of them,I keep them at bay buy regular washing leaves and stems with a mixture of neem oil horticultural soap and water. It is alot of work but worth it. Same as fungus nat lol it's a delicate dance keeping the balance lol
Lots and lots of time...
I’m glad that I’m not the only one that struggles either that dang cebu blue!😂 I have yet another one actively dying in my house right now, shameful and frustrating!😂😂😂
All smiles keep smiling. I believe in the plant world their are certain plants cultivated to keep us humble. Cebu blue, birkin, and I personally can't grow a tetrasperma lol 😂😂😂😂. Its ok side step and keep growing
My Cebu Blue, Birkin and tetrasperma are all thriving. Ferns, begonias and tradescantias all treat my home like a hospice. They spend their final days here. 😢
My cebu blue went to plant heaven 💙
I have been growing plants for almost 50 yrs lol! My best advice is to move it to different lighting and make sure to not over water. Mine wasnt doing much until I moved it to different lighting conditions. Don't give up! ❤❤❤
Yeah, Cebus hate me. Micans hate me too. I agree with all your suggestions. I love my Philos, monsteras and Pothos varieties. I love your videos!
Love your videos and your ideas.
I’m so glad you enjoy them!
Spider mites love love sappy stemmed plants!
Thank you ❤
Hi Ashley, I am into anthuriums now, but also have philodendrons. Just few😮 I do have ferns plants and the worst is keeping with moisture and I ended up killing few 😢 have few different pothos but now I’m tired of them. Crotons? I kill them too, together with the aglionemas; but I’ve been able to keep alive more than 1000s on my collection!
I have succulents & cactus 🌵 and to say the truth this year I did better with them.
Praying plants? There are many different colors & I wish I could give a try, I like easy & less dramatic 🪴 plants 🌱 I love syngoniums & Hoyas. I have also few, and also different kind of spider plants and African violets 😊 one time in one of your videos told us not to buy very small plants, but I had already done it & I struggled to make them grow & finally died, it was a huge waste of time & money!
Tell me, I heard not to repot ZZ plants after we buy them, I heard they love being close tightly together 😊 I enjoy your videos Ashley and I wish I could start my work out again ❤ you look amazing ❤❤❤👍
Do you own any Tillandsia's? I think they're very interesting and under appreciated. They are easy to care for and you can get very creative with decorations. Also hardly any pests.
I really like the Monstera Adensonii; there was one at Home Depot. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this plant.
Hiii. Great video
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
very nice
❤❤❤Thank you for sharing this, because I was curious❤️❤️❤️
Those ficus trees. Ive purchased three of them in about 5 year span, and always end with mealies. And then aphids.
Oh no!!
Thank you for mentioning how poisonous Sago Palms are. Seen many dog's die from them.
Antheriums are prone to thrips, unfortunately. Why Idk but ours struggled with them.
I also cannot keep an echeveria alive either. At all. I suck at them so bad.
I agree with you Ashley Ivy is a spider mite magnet
Hate spider mites!
So today the HD that I work at in NJ, we got 2 racks of plants from Plainview, there was the Anthurium Michelle on there...$98.00 apiece.
Whoa!! Thanks for sharing!
I heard some stores had them at $20!
@@nikkireigns Noooooo, if that's so, then they switched pots.
18:55 friendly reminder that’s a yucca not draceana 😊
I have a problem with the pothos vine flies bothering mine I have to wipe it down twice a week and the flies keep aggravating it what can I do about it it's one of my favorite plants
What about pipers? I love how they look but am scared to get one. Don’t hear many people talk about them.
My fiddle leaf fig leaves got brittle. What should I do? im panicking 😮
Here I am struggling with cacti 😂😂😂😢😢😢😢 everything else I’m apparently good at for the most part in my plant parent journey only passings have been cacti/succulents
Great video. What are your thoughts on string of turtles?
Lowes for large bare bulb amaryllis.
Watching from Allendale Mi. I have trouble with spider mites. Since I watched these videos. Lol.
I used to live in Allendale! I miss it!
Neem oil takes care of spider mites
I’ve been struggling with fungus gnats 😮😢
Same!!!!! I'm in NC, outer Clt area. I put the plants outside while it's sunny and dry. I left some outside during the little cold snap, and that actually seemed to help!!
Philodendrons, prayer plants and jades are my faves. I like my caletha mosaic but its fussy like you I wouldn't recommend 🙂 Oh peace Lily is my least favorite plant 1. because it's the first plant on my allergies test. 2. They remind me of being at a funeral.😂
That is so funny about the peace lily. 😂
I love mine because it was from grandpa’s funeral and grandma cared for it for 6 years before she passed and it became mine. So you are spot on!😂
I've been fighting spider mites on a croton and a palm tree. Washed them down multiple times over the summer and tried insecticide soap. Still, I see mites on the palm.
I will not get another palm if this one dies 😂
We’re just the opposite. My Cebu Blue grows like crazy. The only issue is that it gets leggy when it grows away from the light. My Baltic Blue has me on the struggle bus regularly! I’ve tried everything to get it to thrive and nothing is working. My N’Joy is a mutant.
So interesting how we each have unique experiences with our plants. I love it!
I’ve said good bye to all calathea, prayer plants, ferns, succulents except the string of’s, and fill my house with philodendron, alocasia, pothos, scindapsus, Hoya, dracaena, Sansevieria, ZZ’s and orchids.
Can you make a video about pet friendly plants please 🙏
I never see ficus benjamina I wonder why
Interesting you say rubber plants aren’t prone to spider mites. Mine is dying from them now and I don’t know what to do. I thought I’d find a replacement plant that isn’t prone to them… but now I find out rubber plants aren’t technically susceptible 😅😅😅
😱When I see English ivy, I see spider mites! I call them mighty-mites.
The birken have trouble with that one
I stay away from calathea, ivy, and allocasia. Calathea are just too much work and I don’t want to deal with the pests from the other two.
Bonjour 😊Les coléus, si séduisants par leurs couleurs, ne sont pas des plantes d'intérieur. Il peut prospèrer à l'extérieur, ou en serre froide. 🍀
Just do a maintenance of neem oil for pests ,, that’ll help ,,
I will stay away from peperomias and would like to have collection of aloe and snake Plants.
With ferns, try self watering pots,, but the maidenhair, she’s just a fickle diva - !! 😂
Can you recommend your insecticide products you use?
