Man I just bought a pair of pants and it kept falling down, so I went and got another pair of pants, and same thing...took a closer look, turns out all I needed was a belt 😁 thanks for sharing 👍🏼

The good point on posting this video is that the next time I'll be diagnosing a problem on a car I'll remember this one and think: "never skip the basic checks, do not take anything for granted". Great lesson and thank you for posting your mistakes too!

Leaving the mistake in is really important. Everybody watching this video will most likely remember to check the belts in a charging system for now on. And you realize this. I believe this is what makes you such a great teacher/ instructor.

On the R&R keep in mind certain people might mistake you for rest and relaxation if they're a first time do it yourself home DIY guy. Those of us who've sweated thru the grease and rest of it all knows it means remove and replace.
Drain in the little thing at the bottom. They hide them from the diagnostic guys....
"It's so Rad" the Rad may not have to come out lol.
OMG the belt. That's not your fault, I bet the Transmission shop had something to do with it, maybe missed it. Would make sense. Hope they didn't replace the Transmission due to no power to a solenoid and how the heck could they do a complete trans diagnostic and replacement and not make sure all systems are good as long as it sat?
No need to be embarrassed as we all are learning. Why do you think dr's are "practicing" medicine all the time. Maybe a video on that would be a good topic or even a livestream on TH-cam Paul. That would be a great idea.
Safety first with the stand to keep from falling. Yes I'm replying as I watch so I'm going through it with you.
Gates had a new belt checking plastic tool for the keyring out this past Feb at the vendor show I went to where I got lured into the buying Bosch ADS-625 or as the wife says "Another Toy".
What's your neighbor doing? Woodworking or something? Noticed he quit after you said something about "that" but then the mower comes along... ha ha... Hope it wasn't him as well.
One thing I want to point out with the coolant leaking you touched on earlier and you can address oil to is parts stores sell absorbent blankets which soak up any loose fluids that spill. I bought some and they work great. They make single and large packs of them.
They're even good for that car with a drip every few days and protects the garage floor.
If just coolant and it leaks and you don't have a pack of or any single absorbent pads and you spill some coolant you can get the water hose and dilute it really good. Do we want to put it down drains ? No but if in driveway and only solution that is a option to keep the critters out of it and safe.
Good short easy fix. Also you can use the bright orange, bright green , black, white or whatever color gloves you choose.
Keeps oil off the hands and it feels just like working without gloves with dimples for grip.
I use to love the oeabge then found the bright green cheaper on Amazon.
One last thing Paul. How do you bill this one out as it didn't need a alternator but needed more than one belt.
Me I'd charge initial diagnosis and belt replacements only as we and you know you had more time In in but the video with enough views will help the loss long term.
I offered my daughter camera woman duties this summer and said when we hit enough views to get something she could get all the money for her college fund and I'd have no problem helping her make videos. Yes she won't make it overnight but with regularity we could build something for her future. We'll have to see what she decides as school gets closer and closer to her senior year.
I don't blame her for wanting to stay cool inside but she'd be inside korea than I as she can come in and edit.
Anyways, Nice fix and honest which in my eyes you may not have had very many honest people about that one. It's about doing the right thing and you did! 👍💯💯💯💯 for real!

ScannerDanner I got a 2005 Honda Odyssey the battery light is on the alternator sometimes charging and sometimes is not I just bought a new alternator I haven’t put it on yet I think the belt is still in there but I’m not sure that if the belt is cracked would cause battery light on any tips

You not see the belt and still willing to post, is AWESOME! Guys like me always think that guys like you in your world, everything must always go so well because your so knowledgeable. Just had an Audi that doing voltage drop testing saved me from replacing an alternator! Unfortunately the testing found a bad battery cable that wound up being almost 3 times the price of the alternator, but, in the end, the car was fixed correctly. Yes, I have the paper version of your book!!! :)

and me ,did a volt drop on a ford s max,starter problems ,like flat battery or lazy starter,been to 2 shops,now my turn ,went for the basic checks,battery got power,power to dash,bulb comes on,engine earth,had good live cable,had good starter switch live cable,switch on my test light ,then had bad ground to engine ,if wiggle cable ,came back then got hot ,so put jump lead cable from battery to engine,fixed it ,engine start nice,was stop start engine tech too,so alt was exspensive,starter was exspensive,battery very exspensive ,not wanting to be a parts canoon,understand circuit design of the problem,and find out what is missing ,needed new earth cable ,now i too use my snap on verus as a volt meter,and scope ,graph meter is sweet ,watch what is going on ,voltage over time ,only ever use my scan tool for codes and live data ,but now ,after danner shows how to use it ,find direction ,it has up my game now ,use to use a multimeter for testing ,but prefer the scope style now ,i pass on my skills of what dan teaches ,to others,as i see parts canoons every were,shame ,lot people scared of a scope too,but i show them the 3 tests,volts amps ,resistance/ohms,love my amp clamp,test light ,i think if you watch dans vids ,and take it all in ,you be a top machanic ,as understand the tech ,how it should work ,and then find whats missing ,broke ,well done dan ,glad you made youtube vids ,as i am in england ,our paths would of never crossed otherwise

Great video! FYI, Nissan has the drain plugs in the bottom of the rad. They use a flush plastic plug that used a Philips head. Also, I’m glad to see that you take working on cars safely, seriously. Nothing bothers me more than seeing someone working on a car without a jack stand. A 3 cent O ring is not a good thing to rely on.
Old GM Astra (euro market) used to have a rubber bushings on the alternator mountings requiring a separate ground cable. I've seen many wrongly condemned Alternators due to not testing the cable for volt drop. As you say, always volt drop test the supply and ground. Great channel thanks SD

With all the diagnostic info in the front of your mind,it’s very easy to momentarily overlook something simple. Especially when you can’t even see the component in question. I’m gonna say you noticed it at the appropriate time. Its the guys that would put on a new alt and can’t find the belt I worry about
i think showing your mistakes is extremely beneficial, when people see videos and are never shown mistakes then we feel incompetent and extra frustrated when we make mistakes because the illusion is created. when i see paul make mistakes it makes my own mistakes seem less bad if that makes sense.

I know there are PC's that would still change the Alt and recommend both belts to the customer as preventive maintenance.

Haha .. Love it.. Rookie mistake Danner! ... I did the same thing. Belt was LOOSE from weak tensioner, and not charging. I was focused on replacing the alternator. The Good news is, you only make that mistake once...Thank you for humbly including that footage :)

Dear Mr. Danner; In an interview with the Rosedale Collage president, you mentioned something that made sense to me and stuck in my memory.
Something in effect that “the mistakes that you do burns in mind”. Thus, I would bet you will never check a charging system again without doing a visual check of the components. Especially the belt.
NOBODY is immune to not making mistakes. NOBODY is perfect. After all we are human.
Been there, done that, no worries Paul we're not all perfect like Mr. Haynes or Mr Chilton was/ is. We live and we lean. Glad to see Caleb back working with ya!

This brings back some memories lol,an AA guy dragged in a vehicle into our shop some years ago with a “defective alternator”and guess what ???.....when I came to fit the alternator the belt was missing....oh boy did we give the AA guy some grief over this 🤣🤣🤣....fair play to you sharing this one Paul hats off 👍

that humm you heard is probably the timing chains rubbing against the small cam to cam chain tensioners. Usually sounds like a bad pulley bearing or low power steering fluid. But its usually the timing chains on that particular vintage of VQ35 engine. very common.

The belt !!! the only thing i can say bout that is we are all difficult at one time or another however i gained lotsa intell on you breaking it down ... TH-cam rocks and so do you SD. Always shows check basics first , don't dive in too quick , we're all human and at least you found it early before spending money and time you didn't need too , well done you saved her a packet

Paul; if I never blew a diag by missing something obvious, I would have my own "The Perfect Tech" TH-cam channel. I would emphasize to Techs to check the alternator belt tension as part of any charging system evaluation [just as you should always check the A/C compressor belt on any no/low A/C cooling complaint] [Same as with checking the water pump belt with a hot running/overheating complaint, when so driven]. I have seen a loose belt cause a no/low charge issue before. In checking the belt tension, the fact the belt was awol would have been caught during initial diag. Thank you for your candidness. We all need to be reminded once in a while.

What a relief! Kept cringing each time the camera swept to a shot of the
Vantage. Thought for sure you'd started the car and a pulley or the fans spun up, caught one of the dangling wires and ruined the tool !

Very rarely works, and the newer mixes have a bittering additive so nothing drinks it.

same with mercaptans in propane and natural gas, yet houses still fill full and blow up.... people think it;s rotting garbage or some other issue and light candles/burn incense to cover the smell.........
Well, even Michael Jordan had crummy days! Love the vid! Those sideways engines - I'm old, all the belts used to face the front of the car without all the hoses and electronics too. Wish I had my Dodge Dart with the slant six back. Who in the heck needs electronic seat adjustments - you pretty much adjust it and leave it there forever. My ex went hysterical when her battery went totally dead and needed something out of the trunk. I told her to open the trunk and fetch it. She said she can't because when she pressed the remote button, nothing happened. I said, "PUT THE KEY... IN THE KEYHOLE... AND TURN IT".

Ahhhh, Scanner Danner, Thanks for the comedy. I remember about 4 years ago i had an intermittent charging system on my 1990 Ford ranger. It would charge, then stop charging. "V" belt system. did the checks, yep not working. I went to parts store (20 miles one way) bought a 150$ alternator and set about changing the alternator. I went to pull the belt, found the problem. The belt was there, but the "V" portion was gone, all that was left was the flat part of the belt. I did buy a new belt with the alternator, so i just slapped it on, and 4 years later, still running the 1990 Factory alternator. You arent alone.
As a young tech 20 years ago i was in a hurry to install a transmission in a chevy truck, stabbed it in place and went to hanging parts on the transmission ARGH!! i forgot to put in the torque converter.
I love those Continental belts. They always seem to stay quiet and last a long time.
Even the best in the business can make a rookie mistake, that's what we learn from, thanks for sharing great video

It's called low hanging apple (easy problem). When you often pick high hanging apples on the trees (complicated problems) with a ladder and all, sometimes you forget that picking low hanging apples requires no ladder but you bring it anyway. Funny enough I learned the term during a training when I worked for Nissan Indonesia. 😁

I appreciate this video so much for the minor/major oversight that we all have made. The way you go about diagnosing in your other videos has made me rethink and modify my approach to testing systems. You always talk through your diagnosis and your thought pattern and thinking the problem out loud is the most enjoyable to watch. I will be purchasing your book and subscribing to the premium to learn a few more tricks, I already bought some new "toys" from AES to complement the tools I have to emulate some of your tricks with my old trusty Modis that I have kept simply for the scope and the obd1 cables that it came with back in the day.

My electrical teacher in trade school told me a story. He was apprentice back in the day. He told his boss he checked the battery, volt dropped tested positive and negative. Checked lamp circuit. Full fielded alternator (back when you could actually do that) and it needs an alternator. Boss says, how is the belt? That was in RWD days when belt was a lot easier to see.
This mistake only make you bigger man and expert. For me you have so much credit that I don't count at all

Well of course you couldn't see the belt. It wasn't there! J/k good on you for leaving that in. We all miss the obvious from time to time.
If you play the diagnosis in reverse it is perfect!
If you had done the alternator, I think you would have found you would have pulled the radiator too. I have done a lot of these on Muranos and Maximas with the 3.5l and they are all the same chassis. You may have been able to get to the alternator without pulling radiator, but for the extra few minutes it takes to remove, it is worth it for the extra space it gives you. Also, FYI the radiator drain plug is on the very bottom almost directly below the cap. Factory radiators usually take a #3 phillips to remove. Aftermarket radiators may have something else. I just did a 2006 Maxima alternator 2 days ago.
It may be on more recent models, but I've replaced them on the 3.5l by dropping the engine 1/2" and pulling them out at the front of the engine.
