My grandpa & my dad taught me the basics when I was a kid, but I had alot of friends that didn't have the benefit of relatives familiar with automotive workings. Had your channel been around then, they'd all be pros today! We had a thirst for info, but it was never easy to get. In those days, at least around here in MA, automotive knowledge was a big secret - I can remember any time I got into a jam with something I, and my dad didn't understand, we'd never get the help I needed by calling a local garage. They'd tell us, "Well bring it in here, and we'll take care of that!" I could never afford to! That's how I got into this field! Just your channels alone are a HUGE value to the WORLD - not just a few guys down the road from you. Think back to when we had to scour phone books and make 15 phone calls to find parts or information -- now, we grab a mouse, or a phone, and click or poke away. Amazing amounts of info out there. You should be extremely proud that you're a HUGE part of that information - you've probably helped MILLIONS of people across the globe get back on the road. That's really something when you stop and think about it!! 👍

Thanks, great video I had the exact same issue on my '95 Camry and after I bought a rebuilt alternator I discovered the intermittent issue was simply caused by worn brushes.
Here is an outline I fashioned after watching your video and a couple others.

To confirm that you have an alternator problem and not an external wiring or connection problem, do these simple checks before you grab a wrench:
With a charged battery start the car. Do the following voltage checks. Measure across the positive and negative posts and remember the value. Move the negative meter lead to the engine block. Make sure that the voltage is the same. Move the positive lead to the large post on the alternator. If you have a dead alternator then this voltage will be slightly less than the battery reading (small resistance in the wire). Turn the Car OFF and remove the three-wire plug from the alternator. Start the car (the bad battery indicator should be OFF) and carefully measure each of the three-wire connections in the removed plug. They all should have the 12V present.
If you have confirmed these points then it is safe to assume you have a bad alternator.
It is easier to remove the alternator before performing the following checks to determine your failure. remove the 3 nuts and the one screw holding the rear outer cover. At this point, you can easily find the test points to check the stator windings, the rotor windings, the brushes, slip-rings, and the diodes with a simple meter. You don't want to remove any screws before you make these checks. that way you can find the fault before you move connections around.
To check the rotor windings, the slip-ring connections, and the brushes: measure the resistance across the two screws holding the brush assembly in place. It should read less than 10 Ohms and stay there as you slowly spin the rotor. Then confirm that these screws are not shorted to the chassis ground (OL on the DMM).
To check the stator windings and the diodes: Measure the resistance between the 4 screws located around the edge. They all should be around 0 Ohms. In "diode Check" mode measure any screw to chassis ground and then reverse the leads. In one direction you will read something like 0.3 volts and in the other direction, it needs to read OL (overload or infinity Ohms).
Many times you will find the brushes are too warn and the first check showed OL instead of 10 Ohms. Why replace the alternator when a $30 part will work?

That belt issue with new alternator was funny the look on your face. Your humbleness is what keeps me knowing you are one of the best. You are an honest technician and mechanic. Having a charging issue with 2007 Ford 500 a friend’s car. I know the fords have the dumb but smart charging system. He used an aftermarket alternator and did not replace his 11 month old battery like I told him to do after testing. I told him to go OEM on the alternator and buy new battery. He bought new battery but light came on with aftermarket alternator. He is looking at buying the new OEM alternator.
I am a dad and sometimes make mistakes especially while working on the car so this was a great one for me! I was laughing when camera-man Caleb said, "This is why you let Pete change the parts." It was cool to see in the outtakes how much he helps you during filming.
Made my day. How real was this? Took me about 4 hours as a rook--just as S. Danner noted-- for 1st time replace of alternator on 2006 Sentra, and then--start car and battery light comes on. No charging. Good grief!

This is the first regular vid I’ve watched since joining premium. I’ve watched up to chapter 20 and I’ve noticed something interesting. After watching so many hrs of vids I understand your teaching style better. It makes following along easier, almost like listening to an old friend explain stuff.
I've directed others at his videos, they usually say, "that guys rather annoying" I say just watch more videos, you'll get used to it and follow easier. in the same sense a teacher shouldn't be too perfect and easy, else the trainees will slack off and not pay attention ;)

I’ve been working on a drinking game for watching his classes. Take a drink when he says “I apologize” or “variables”. The only problem might be you couldn’t follow along for after awhile. Lol.
I get such a kick out of it when he gets excited about certain technologies. I think that’s because I can so relate, I’m even older than he is so even the concept of learning on u-tube blows me away. Good for you for turning others on to this channel.

After all my years of being a tech i still do all the necessary testing but sometimes i don't think of why i do that testing. This video reminds me that the simple things can bite you. Well done all three of you.
As a mechanic, a good indicator that your car has entered a phase of giving you a series of ongoing problems, is around the time the starter and alternator require replacing. Don't be surprised if the transmission fails soon, along with the radiator, AC compressor, water pump, hoses - it just goes on. Of course, there will always be exceptions to this rule, but I have tested over 30,000 cars and have driven around the globe 3 times when stringing all my roadtests together. But if you love your car as I do mine, then that is fine and show her your love :). Cheers from Rob of Australia

I bought Mr Danner’s book. I went to Votech 30 years ago for automotive, and unfortunately the instructors didn’t really know electronic’s themselves back then. I am having issues with my 07 chevy. Battery is reading a little over 11v at idle. I narrowed it down to the alternator but decided watch a scanner danner video anyways. I was wondering on the way home how the hell does that volt meter in the cluster actually work. Sure enough my question was answered by Mr. Danner's video. This man is good at what he does. These electrical systems boggles my mind at times.
Just a thought... through the years I've learned when forced to charge a flat battery with a new or rebuilt alternator; avoid letting the engine idle as much as possible. No need to race it either... the idea is to avoid traumatizing the new alternator by keeping it's cooling fan rotation fast enough up to mitigate high amperage heat generation. Does it always work? No. A fully charged battery is always best. Cool videos, Thanks!

I just wanted to say that your voltage drop tests that you teach do not only apply to the automotive field! A piece of equipment at my work had a burnt out 480v 3 phase 30 HP electric motor. 5 grand later we got it rebuilt. I wired it back up & turned it on and it sounded weird! One thing you cant do with a 3 phase motor is run them while missing a phase, you will let the smoke out pretty quick. To make a long story short, it is also a variable speed motor that uses a hefty resistor bank to control the different speeds. I had 480v going to the motor and I checked the resistance on the resistor bank with a ohm meter that checked out good.
I used your voltage drop test on the resistor bank and my voltage dropped to 14 volts!
Had I not known how to do a voltage drop test I would have never found the problem and possibly fried another motor.

The only mistake made in this video was not having Jake actually change his own alternator...you would have instructed him to verify that the belt was fully on each pulley and you never would have had the loose belt. Fortunately, that mistake made for a great video! I sure appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos. I have learned so much on this channel, as well as the premium channel and can't thank you enough!
I have a ‘92 Celica and I will use everything I learned here. I have a no start problem if I don’t start my car after more than a day. I have replaced my alternator twice and my battery is two years old.

An amp clamp reading of the charging current from the alternator at idle, no load might have illustrated the extra stress a bad battery puts on the alternator, especially when compared to the current with a new battery. Thank you!

I wish you did hook a clamp meter on the alternator-battery post wire to show that the alternator is supplying its rated current which will show whether it’s doing its job. Excellent video as usual Paul.
Hey Paul, I'll bet the root of all these electric system problems is that big amplifier. By the size of the cable feeding it, I bet it draws a lot of amps when on. This large draw strains that little alternator to feed it and also keeps the battery in a constant low charge state. P.S. I found that stick also works on teenagers! Thanks.
Nice thing about the older Celica's like my 1989, (not sure on this 1994) is that along with the battery light they also have a voltage gauge telling you the actual voltage (why they omitted the gauge on newer vehicles? Don't know) so when my alternator failed, not only the battery light came on, but I could see that the gauge was only showing around 12v whether I was at idle or at higher RPM's... Normal conditions showed the gauge at a little over 14v... I also tested the system with a volt meter to be certain. I didn't do any further testing cause it was an old alt. on a 2nd car which sat for long periods of time between starting/driving causing extra stress on the alt... I do keep the neg. cable disconnected but maybe during the winter months I should start bringing the battery inside to keep it from possibly freezing... Love the videos Paul. Thanks!

Great video. I did the belt on my 3800 LeSabre that way a few years back where it was a groove off and riding the edge of the crank pulley . Easily done .

Paul, I believe the accepted spec for a lead-acid 12V battery at 100% charge is 12.8 volts and not 12.6. There are various charts out there that that show the numbers (no load voltage VS % of charge/capacity.
Paul could start a whole new channel based on this Toyota alone.

Great video and troubleshooting guide. Recently replaced my 2009 Corolla alternator. It was charging, but the alt pulley bearing went bad after 260k miles. There was a loud grinding sound and I thought my water pump was going bad again. Replaced with a remanufactured alt and after over 5k miles still going strong.
Soy Eldiego I get lifetime warranty with my parts house on anything I buy there. They know I only buy there unless they're closed and I need it right away or they don't have it. Replaced my sons old Toyota Camry alternator with a REMY brand 4 yrs ago and when it went bad I took it back in and they gave me another across the counter. Same thing with brakes and rotors for my 04 Chevy Tahoe.
I also buy parts there for others to fix their cars as well or if I have family or friends that need cars fixed.
Thanks again! Using a cheap voltmeter today on the very same Chrysler Neon 2005 i told you about days ago. At idle, my voltmeter oscillated around/between 13.98 to 14.02 V. But no lights or accessories were on at this stage. Though, I felt I should tighten my alternator belt slightly but the change was very little (14.02 Vat idle).

Paul , get the $60 SOLAR battery tester. Checks CCA, starting voltage drop and works on all types of batteries, AGM etc. it's better than the old style battery load testers.
I appreciate your videos . I not a expert the alternator not charging I was thinking brushes . The noise probably the bearings and load .. years ago I remember a customer brought in there car to the dealer . Light was dimly shining on while running. I tested it with and it was charging. Finally I fixed it a bad diode and it allowed the light to shine yet still charged .. last weekend my alternator stopped working on my Road glide . I had a shorted stator . Tested it shorted to ground . I have just replaced the brush package before on alternator to help some one get by

As a matter of fact, what would be really cool, make the blooper reel, just the video, and then show clips of the real fix at the end, during ROLL CREDITS part.
My thought is the brush of regulator is worn because you took broom stick and hit on the alternator and work fine.
One thing we can always rely on is that your "complete" in your approach and teaching. So much so that I rarely have any questions. However, I will review some other videos about voltage drop testing. I still find that confusing.
Just think of the multimeter as reading a difference in potential. When you stick the positive lead to the positive terminal on the battery, then the ground lead to the ground terminal, you know you're going to see battery voltage - there's 12.6v difference (on a good battery) between positive and negative. Now, if you keep your red lead on the positive terminal, but put the black lead at the end of the positive terminal at the starter WHILE it's cranking (circuit must be loaded - operating - for voltage drop tests), you are measuring ANY resistance in that section of wire. If your meter reads, say, 8v, that means you're losing 8v of energy to heat somewhere in that wire - you'd either be scrubbing terminals or replacing the wire at that point. 1-2v would be acceptable. On smaller wires, smaller voltages are bad, since there is less current. 1.5v of drop on a normal sized wire, say, a headlight wire, is pretty bad. You should only see mV there.

Nice job re- creating the charging issue Paul. Tell your brother James to put out some non communication videos showing all the high speed low speed can and lans. And all the new ones. I had a 08 tahoe today that when it got warm the transmission would not engage. 2L70 2 mode trans. No dtcs. It was low on engine coolant. Hybrid.
Amazing content man definitely appreciate you taking the time to record it and give a detailed explanation for us who don’t know as much my dad had taught me the stick trick for the alternator but in general alternator was pretty bad and just needed replacement & as well as the battery glad I watched your video was a tremendous help man! Paul, I hesitate to be too critical but I spend a great deal of time in my classes making sure that students have a clear understanding that CURRENT (electrons) is what is flowing through the wires and NOT voltage. Voltage is simply a difference in potential that causes the current to flow and the amount of current that flows depends on the resistance between those two points if Ohm's law applies. When there is NO potential difference (voltage) between two points then no current will flow between those points. Constructive criticism I hope.
so when it says 12 volts, those that mean like one side is 12 volts and the other is like 0 so the ones on 0 side go to 12? I don't really get how it works

Love all your videos man doing a great job , a test you didn’t do after fitting the alt is check the battery recharge current this would have showed the alt over working to try and charge the battery, if you put an amp clamp on the negative battery cable and run the engine the current flowing into the battery should drop below 10 amps within 5 mins with a good battery if it doesn’t it will cook the alt , try this on any vehicle and you will see initially an inrush current with the battery having had to turn the engine over but this charge rate will go down below 10 amps after 5 mins of engine run the better the battery the quicker it will settle down to a steady state of charge, try it on any vehicle you will see , keep up the good work cheers Del.
if the battery is sulfated (old wear out) it will take almost no current and the internal resistance will be high and the voltage will rising fast up to top voltage or have i got it wrong? The battery will not put any current to the car system when the car is running only if the generator is loaded over the specifications the battery will put current out to the car system or when the revs is low(ie when voltage drop under 12.6 volt) or did i got it wrong?

Great job. Love your videos. I wouldn’t leave the scan tool where you had it when you were working on the alt.
Paul my VW LT 35 van had a 'bad battery' and wouldn't hold a charge...during some cold weather (but not that cold) I took it off to charge and when opening the 'cells' to 'gas off' during charging....one of the cells(the one nearest the front of the van) was frozen solid. Had to order a new battery(which I was going to do anyway) but just so anyone who reads this know, NEVER charge a battery when any of the cells are frozen. Only thaw the battery out naturally...(don't heat it) and once done you could charge it..BUT the reason why it has frozen is because (IIRC) that the electrolyte has lost it's charge (less than 40%) and has a higher water content than electrolyte content..Batteries with a full charge freeze at much lower temperatures..you would be lucky to recharge the battery after such an event so be prepared to get a new one..
I really appreciate the depth and specificity of these videos, especially the explanations of the thought processes, but there's definitely room to edit them down in some places--e.g., a little less dead time listening to the engine rev... and rev...

Dear Mr. Paul, I've noticed through the video that when the blower is turned off the voltage raise somehow significantly. This lead me to believe that the blower, as might be with the radiator & AC fans might be eating more Amperage than it should be considering the car's year model. I have seen a video at "Real Fixes Real Fast" where Mr. Duane found a blower that eats way more amperage than it should be through an Amp Clamp testing even though the blower is working fine, and he compares it to a new blower amperage consumption. So if you also consider the amperage draw of the blower, as well as radiator & condenser fans, this will yield in the longevity of the alternator and battery. Hope only if your time allow to do an amp clamp consumption testing of such components. Again, I love your movies, and your movies should be cast on national TVs and you became a star Loooooool. In this case when the blower was shut off the ac compressor also shut off, raising the RPM. This was the significant rise in voltage you were seeing. Did you notice how well the voltage recovered when I raised the RPM myself? This is what you were seeing. Thanks for the comment!
So this car doesnt have an "Idle Up" function for when the A/C Cuts in? I know for mine which is the 95' Nissan maxima that it idles up when the A/C kicks on and that helps keep the system voltage up.
Also Another example of abnormal power consumption by motors was found by Eric O over at South main Auto Channel, he had a Subaru come in due to overheating from Rad fans not running, and it came down to a blown fuse, so Eric replaced the fuse then went the extra mile and put a current clamp around the Rad fan circuit and sure enough, the fans while working were drawing enough power to be right on the limit of the fuse which would have caused the fuse to blow if the fans were running for long enough, eg while sitting still.

Lol I like the smack and carry a big stick lol to smack that alternator ha ha ha. I also notice that Paul comes back after a fix, its like me I can never leave diagnosis alone lol.

Paul I have a flaw in my Toyota Yaris 2007 is a voltage drop that makes the minimum is rough, and change the alternator and the battery and improved a bit the only detail I can not find is that every time I put any gear is drive , reverse more air conditioning, there is a strong voltage drop that makes the minimum is rough but if you leave it in neutral is all super well that opinion you would have on this!? Grateful for your help strong hug
I'm sorry, I'm having trouble understanding. Are you saying the idle is rough and voltage is low at idle in drive but not in park or neutral? What is your voltage dropping too? And at what RPM in drive?

Not all alternator applications seem to be designed to carry the full load of all the electrical systems turned on in the car at once at idle. The idle level plays in because some will not carry the full load at idle, but will at higher rpm. It seems that many designs are a compromise and will allow for current being drawn from the battery during those times of high current load at idle. It's true that a weak battery will only make the situation worse.
