Back then they didn't.
They didn't lie. 3D gaming was a brand new thing back then. Nintendo was making a fully 3D game for the first time ever, and they basically just halfway didn't know what they were doing yet. Kaze Emanuar is a very, very highly skilled and experienced Mario 64 modder, and he's currently working on going through all of the code and optimizing everything. Currently he's got the game running at about 45fps (it normally runs at 30), and he thinks he will probably be able to get a pretty consistent 60fps out of it when he's done.
Good progress. Would like a better sliding animation and ground pound with yoshi.

For both questions. Yes
It was a bit weird in M64DS having the steed be apparently the most proactive and intelligent character in a mainline Mario game, so something more like this would have fixed a lot of problems I had with that game.
A simple detail makes this mod better than the original 🙌🤩

This is a pretty cool mod but i think there can be some additions in an update to this mod like making Yoshi have more interactions with the enemies he eats like for example instead of him eating a bob-omb and the bob-omb just turning into a coin make Yoshi be able to spit out the bob-omb to attack enemies but you can wait long enough for the bob-omb in Yoshi's mouth for bob-omb to chnge into a coin like in Mario 64 DS and it would be nice if you would have to find Yoshi in his blocks like in Mario World instead of him just kinda appearing next to Mario and one last thing make Yoshi run away from Mario when Mario gets hit by an enemy when he rides Yoshi for more of a chalange
You have very good points, but please, for the sake of the readers' noggins, add some commas.
But yeah, being able to spit Bob-ombs, fire and what-not would be pretty cool.
Also, the cooldown between Yoshi's flutter jumps needs to be longer, by maybe by 0.5 or 1 seconds. Seems like the player is able to flutter jump much too frequently.

It's what I always wanted to do with Yoshi. Hell yeah this is amazing...I mean what's the point in having yoshi in the game if you can't use him .. one hundred lives and and a special triple jump was such a disappointment ..I just wanted to ride yoshi 😦
Shigeru Miyamoto claimed that he and the team weren’t satisfied with the way Yoshi came out, so they decided to add Yoshi as a hidden cameo when up in the castle via cannon after unlocking it for collecting all 120 power stars rather than scrapping the character model completely.

Yoshi was on the run from the IRS. He stopped by the castle to deliver a message to Mario from Nintendo, but had to remain hidden, hence why he was on the roof. Afterwards, he fled to Isle Delfino.

I know this is a bit old, but is this the finished mod? Would love to see what else you could do with Yoshi mechanics. Although I imagine the egg stuff would be difficult to program.

Bueno en realidad el propio migamoto afirmó que si quería a Yoshi en el juego. El dijo que por limitancias de la consola no se podía pero aquí se ve que con el diseño de los mundos hubiera sido muy incómodo xd
Es que el juego ya se había terminado con la idea de que sería sin Yoshi, seguro en etapa temprana de desarrollo habrá estado más acomodado

Here yoshi is laying coins when he eats an enemy. In the ds version he laid eggs.
This is fantastic, but the problem gameplay-wise is that the levels are not made with Yoshi in mind.
For example, some Super Mario World levels use Yoshi to make platforming much easier, but since he was never used here, he is needed in very few spots, which might be why they removed him along with hardware limitations at the time.
so it's a ROM for the N64 to open, I thought it was for smbuilder64
