Dude I love the humanization element, the heartening of Godzilla and human connection. Godzilla's like, "This is who I am now. I may have saved you once, but that was a thing I am no any longer. I'm am now a terrible beast. A tragedy thrust angrily upon the world that humanity has created. And you, too, are you human, Shindo. And I cannot spare you."
Shindo's like, "I understand, and this is a death I've longed for. This is a death devised of honor."

Shindo wanted to die. He felt shame and guilt knowing that his success, and by extension, the success of Japan, was at the cost of the dinosaur’s life. Knowing that his savior became Godzilla rather than simply dying was the final straw for him. He felt terrible guilt for the fate his savior had suffered, and wanted to pay his debt. Godzilla, seen visibly crying in this scene, was reluctant to kill the only other creature who had ever cared about him. But Shindo wanted it this way, so Godzilla grants his one and only friend this final request.

Heisei godzilla had to be the one who has the saddest back stories.
He never wanted to kill shindo as he had memories of saving him when he was a mere dinosaur. And shown visibly crying as shindo wants to die with his nod just absolutely depressing...

Shindo: Good to see you, Godzilla.
    Godzilla: You. (Roar)
Shindo: You do remember that time. I have no other ways to save you. Even though I try to find and make contact for help, I will never make it on time. I am sorry that I could not save you.
(Shindo thought back of Godzilla who is wound)
(Godzilla thought back of Shindo sadness very painful)
Godzilla: You did what you could. There is nothing you can do. But........
    (Shindo saw Godzilla's tears)
    Godzilla: I cannot.
Shindo: Please. My time is over.
    Godzilla: (Roar)

This song is one of the saddest songs I have heard in the Godzilla franchise yet it relates also to many sad and tragic events in my life and I am now 35 and have seen my fair share of tragedy.
I remember as a little boy watching this and it having such a deep meaning but that song stayed in my head forever next to the ending song of Son of Godzilla which made me cry as a kid. My Dad always wondered why I cried, I told him as an adult it was the cinematics and the music, the power of film is so great where it has the power to make those happy and bring tears to one's eyes.
This song is one of Akira Ifukube's
finest works, next to Requiem in Godzilla vs Destroyah.
